It is the latter. Nobody can give any kind of educated or well formed opinion on the update since nobody has played it yet. All this what you call "mixed reception" is just "wah 30 GB just for goids!!!".

They said that about stuff being added over time.
NOTHING in the patch notes says anything about new content other than the thargoid story coming to a close. If they added anything else they would at least mention it in the notes; as they have done before [without actually spoiling content].
As I said, at least when the new ships come in over time; that's the new content for people like me. lol
But you know that it's supposed to be the end of the thargoid war? So, probably, unless FD does something silly, we''l move on from anti-xeno storyline. And that's good
That's probably a sensible idea to assess the update's amount of new content. How dare you be reasonable. As it will be several hours before I even get home to start the download process, I will eagerly await the results.
There are roughly 1200 new files (from 89.5k to 90.8k) and total size has only increased ~300MB.
Update.log also indicates that 105 old files (103 from the Win64 asset directory) were removed.

Kinda had hoped for pre load update while the servers were still down. So those less fortunate and not blessed with a 1gbit connection wouldn't have to wait for hours to download. Oh well, it is what it is.

I suppose the damage they cause is not based on how many hull/shield points they remove and, as such, they're not really of any use vs other vessels, but just heat vents?
