Update 2 Feedback - Performance, Lighting, Bloom, Textures, Visors

The news bulletin doesn't say where to post feedback. The replies to the patch notes appear closer to "thank you" messages so I've decided to open a new thread.

My feedback appears to be in line with what others are experiencing:

First of all I experience no performance gains. Frames per second are still around:

  • ~30 FPS at 1440p with a GTX 2060.
  • ~45 FPS at 1440p with a GTX 2080ti.

Lighting contrast remains "broken" with dark stuff being extremely dark:

SRV emmisive paintjobs still look nothing like what they used to -- Colours are way too white and still display a lack of bloom:

From the cockpit view there is even less (none) brightness/bloom -- There is definitely a constrast issue depending on whether we're in the cockpit or not -- You fixed part of this with the skybox discrepancy between in-cockpit and freecam -- I fear this is the same issue:

Other SRV paintjobs are also still suffering -- All of the reflective materials are matt and look like a different colour -- The thumbnails do a great job showing "what they used to look like":

The classic heatsink glow on ships is also still missing, no changes have been made and the bloom is non-existant:

The flight suit now has a helmet option though there are no icons -- Don't rush it guys:

Other suits do not have an opague visor -- This is really unfortunate and ruins the possibility for cool screenshots and the Rebuy Unlimited machinima -- Can you confirm this is coming?

Finally -- All suits can be customised to use the undersuit of another type (example: Maverick can use a Dominator undersuit) though the flight suit is not available.

It would be great if we can also choose the flight suit undersuits because there are some excellent design choices there that would look great with the new suits!
people are so quick to fall for the "long list of fixes" trick!

Just because the patch note is big and long, doesn't mean it is actually good!

I am still waiting for tomorrow's roadmap. Those patch notes mean nothing right now. The game is still in a very much broken state.

Regarding the lighting in space, what I don't get is in Horizons they have a nice system where as you move out from the primary star its light no longer overpowers the skybox. More stars start to appear along with the dust clouds and color. It feels like in Odyssey it's stuck in that "close to the sun" mode dark skybox mode no matter where you are. I haven't seen any statement from them confirming if this is intended, and if so why? What is the thinking? Or is it just bugged? (feels bugged to me)

IMHO, I think the FDEV are have not yet hit the nail on the head at fully solving / identify the cause of the FPS drop. The cause for FPS drop the way I see it, varies according to game conditions, place visited etc. . . . From what we read in the forums, FPS drop occurs across the whole range of hardware. So I would rule out a hardware issue. It has to be a software issue. Not sure if it could be done, but, perhaps something the FDEV could try under a test scenario, is start removing program modules, until a stage is reached were the FPS issue is made to work. Then start adding other game program modules until whatever added module might be the cause of the FPS drop.

Through reasoning one gets to the truth.

Ugh.. I wish I could test out if the performance improved for me or not, but my game always crashes upon logging into any game mode, so not yet I guess...

Just did a quick run through the suit tutorial again to compare performance with the previous version.

There hasn't been any appreciable change in pattern of CPU utilization. It's still extremely bursty and still limiting performance in many cases.

What I did notice was that some GPU limited effects (which are fairly rare on my test system and settings). The fog/mist particles in the generator room were much less of a frame rate hit, without looking dramatically worse. However, the trade-off made with fire is much worse. I gained maybe 5-8% in GPU limited frame rate here, but the new fire looks like total crap. Not worth it.

There were also some texture problems I'd never seen before and the overall feel was that of mostly superficial changes that don't address underlying issues.

I'll still need to see a lot more before I can judge the update as a whole, but the performance optimizations thus far seem mediocre.

This is from Update 1:

I'm uploading the Update 2 now, won't be converted for a while though.

The most noticeable change that doesn't look like a new bug (e.g. is something that's in the patch notes) is in the fire in the command building. It looks like they reduce the bloom on it and cut down on it's density for a more significant hit to IQ than to performance cost.

Still images don't do the effects justice, but...

I'm still sad I couldn't get a Cyrix 5x86 before they went pretty much extinct. Such an exotic thing when all we had was AMD and Intel.
It reminded me of some bizarre processor I had after 386 - it was supposed to be like 486sx (no coprocessor),
but I only recall it was NOT Intel nor any brand I can remember today.

have a new graphic bug after the update, pics from Karman Port, Arikara system (after today's hotfix):

We still get the same GREY balls of rocky planets, Icy ones are not much better either.

We scan planets as we see them some green, red, blues, and white etc but when we land on them GREY all GRAY, we pick up Iron it's GRAY, we pick up sulpur it's GREY as with all known colors of aliments they are all GRAY, WHY!

Is it too hard to add more color to planets, No Mans Sky and osiris new dawn have done it as well as many other lesser cheaper games have better bio-domes, we have Odyssey plan GREY as far as the eye can see.

Where are the M-CLASS/earth type planets too land on, there are billions of planets in the known universe some are Earth like, though i haven't been there since Odyssey launch i bet we can't land on Earth.

We do see earth like planets in most systems but why cant we land on them.

Even our own Mars is red, there are other colored planets out there like Sulpur Yellowish color planets etc.

MOST OF ALL WHY NO OTHER LIFE FORMS or are you FDev's of the single minded snowflakes that think we are alone.

ODYSSEY was sold to us as a lie WE NEED MORE PLANET COLOR.

Is no man sky worth it?

My peformance has taken a huge hit from this update I'm now below 15fps in settlements. Was around 35-40fps before.

I sunk several hundred hours into it and enjoyed it. If you like exploration you'll likely enjoy it. The base building kept me amused for a long time too. Graphics are a bit cartoony, but it doesn't detract at all - it's just the style of the game.

And I like the replayability. Put it aside for half a year, their next big free expansion rolls out and it is a completely new game.
