Update 2 Feedback - Performance, Lighting, Bloom, Textures, Visors

It's even more bizarre
when you actually monitor all of your hardware
and NONE of components is 100% utilized
but you still get 35-40 fps instead of usual 60.
my H/W is old - very similar to what D. Braben mentioned in his first "Odyssey progress" apology, so an i7-5930k, GTX 980, SSD, 32gb
So on medium settings, around 30+ FPS with some dips, on high it's closer to the 20+ with dips (sometimes hits 30fps).

I honestly bought this DLC because I thought Fdev is pretty good with optimization. They have ( I thought ) a good hold of their engine to be able to optimize quickly...

My feedback appears to be in line with what others are experiencing:
That is fine. Just be aware as per feedback in other threads there appears to be also other commanders experiencing increases of FPS after this patch, me included.

Not sure what was done with optimization, but it feels worst now. Previously I had 50-55 fps in settlement. Now it improved to 55-65 fps with constant drops to 20-25 fps every 20-30 sec which is extremely annoying! I would rather have steady lower FPS than this mess.

There is a reason I used the Aorus engine to aim for a 77C top temp on the 2060, but man the usually quiet Windforce sounds like a C-130 when running Oddity.
I especially selected the 2080 Strixx because it's normally so quiet I forget it has fans at all - perhaps use Odyssey in cooling solution reviews as test env from now on?

EDH and EDO is still using DirectX 11 API and unfortunately that alone is a very limiting factor for performance. However I think they actually have a CPU/thread problem and not a graphical limitation.

CZ hit me the hardest

I agree, and it might even not have been introduced with Odyssey. Maybe it was already present in Horizons, it's only more apparent in the DLC.

NPCs seem to be real FPS killers in Horizons lately.
This is a short test video I recorded a few day ago in the San Tu 3 rings, first in a random part of the ring, then a couple of hundreds of kms farther, in a Res site.
The only difference is the presence of NPCs. Without them I had my usual 144ish (uncapped) FPS, while my GPU was being utilized as expected (>90%).
Notice how the FPS drops to sub-100 figures in the presence of NPCs, along with the GPU load (50 to 70%).

It seems that NPCs instantly make my rig CPU-limited. Now you can argue that the i7-8700 is not exactly an up to date CPU (although it's a desktop processor which is a bit faster than those typical 6-core laptop CPUs laptops used to have 2 years ago), but the problem is that I'm 100% sure that 2 years ago when I bought this laptop it used to be absolutely capable of >130 FPS in Res sites. I'm not sure when it changed since most of the time (outside of league matches) I'm running Elite at capped 90 FPS, but probably it happened after either the September 2019 update or the fleet carrier update.

There used to be a "see more as you get further out" adjustment. Pity it went.

Yes this is what I was referring to - as you get away from the main star in the system more stars would become visible, and brighter and then the dust clouds would appear. The Hubble sort of view. The inky black sky view is what happens when you're standing in the intense light and the photons from that source are sort of overpowering the other light sources (stars) so you can no longer see them. This was modeled in Elite up until Odyssey. So the question is, was this change intentional or is there some bug with the lighting system.

The insane difference in cockpit lighting, I could even invert the text and it got slightly more readable.

I have the same massive fps drop on i7 10700K and I haven't even noticed any core "bottlenecking" framerate - usually it's the solution - a thread that runs on single core and calculates some critical data needed to generate next frame stays "behind" what results in low fps at low total CPU/GPU usage.

I got better performance in concourse now (AMD CPU, NVidia Gpu). The one thing that FD should look at is the issues of reflections or screenspace reflections.

When looking thru the window directly at the the shop keeper, the FPS drops 20+fps. Step aside into the opening of the shop and the fps immediately goes up.

This was mentioned recently and if that weirdness would be fixed, I think we're close to an ok performance.

Allow me to utilise my own thread once more -- In the patch note it states that the UI BACK button should now work for all screens.

Unfortunately it still does not work to get out of the on-foot conversation menu:

Nor the Advanced Maintenance screens in Station Services. Nor any Station services screen for that matter.

Most annoying thing about all this that I'm OK for now playing on medium until I either I purchase a new video card or fdev fix their game... but, in space/ground missions I want to play on ultra because it works fine, but I keep having to switch back and forth when going to do on foot CZ

Well, I can't agree with the assessment @Joe Akeem

Here's my screenshots, and honestly.. meh.

We start out okay, except for my VRAM being eaten completely by the time the station loads, and having only 59 inside.

Then I flew to a resort. So What exactly is the game waiting for, not using my GPU or my CPU?

look, it actually uses it when there's lighting and reflections

It really is a shame, because the texture work is really, really good.

My understanding of culling is you have settings or invisible walls that control what gets renderer, so anything behind the wall is not seen, therefore should not be rendered.
So can someone explains this - taken just now in Hauser's Reach (Robigo)
At the far left lift from the concourse about to go down to the hanger.
hanger0.jpg

Notice I'm looking at a fairly dull wall, but only getting 42FPS.

But if I step forward a little bit - the 'wall' on the left disappears, so now I can see the main station pads!
hanger1.jpg

Somehow the renderer has decided the wall in front and to the left of me doesn't need to be rendered - but the rest of the hanger outside does!!
and I'm actually getting 2FPS more!!

Someone needs to explain to FDev that this is pretty much the opposite of what culling is suppose to do!

Conversations are about choices and I do understand general logic behind it - you simply HAVE to choose an "answer".

Of course it makes sense in a "real" RPG when you are interacting ("talking to") general NPCs and your choice have consequences,
not in ED - those "NPCs" are actually just redesigned UI.

Is no man sky worth it?
YES!.
For visual effects of the different bio-domes, less bugs i get 1-2 that are not all that bad but usually get fixed quickly, and regularly new content had three in the past 3-4 weeks, every planet in a system can be landed on hot or cold, in Odyssey only a few each system, the game is cheaper too.

Though the only problems I'm annoyed at is the very long load on starting after selecting your save/game at main menu it can be over a 1-2 minutes plus long and the flight controls a bit 2 dimensional though some mods will help yes you can add mods.
