Update on Communication

But as for a "binding roadmap", we're unlikely to see one because it's nearly guaranteed that if a roadmap were released, and something people want either isn't on it, or is on it and moves, people will come out with their pitchforks and torches and throw a fit about it.
Shh, don't mention ship interiors...

Hi Arf, great to see you are well and I appreciate the update on the communications.
Im not sure what is going in behind the scenes, but i feel i need to give some feedback as a long time supporter of the game:

1- Why are we only hearing this now after 5 weeks of almost silence? It is kinda disappointing as things had been going so well since Odyssey launch, I thought community engagement had turned a corner. I dont think being kept in the dark since the start of the year has done the community any good. And even having this message earlier in Jan I think would have done a lot to reassure people.

2- Some idea on timescale would be appreciated. I understand you may not be at liberty to say, but even knowing if by 'soon' you mean within the next couple weeks, or if its still months away, again i think it would put people at ease and avoid some of the salt.

Lastly, just want to say that im very much looking forward to the comms and streams when they do reappear, hope to hear from you again soon!

Sometimes people can be completely wrong, sometimes they can be partially wrong. Frontier did indicate ships would be designed with interiors in mind, they didn't say they were coming in Odyssey.

Not at launch ;) (not at all in Odyssey was eventually communicated)

Updates to the plan as it evolves would mitigate lots of these misinterpretations and optimistic interpretations of ambiguous phrasing. I struggle to take any threat of undermining from competitors seriously, the level of secrecy FDev have applied over the years is excessive imo.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't huh!. 🤷‍♀️
Actually doing something would be a start.

Like providing an actual update on when we can expect patch 11, if FC interiors are still on track (i.e. part of #11), throw the consolieros a bone perhaps (good or bad), and what's in the pipeline beyond update 11, which we have not been told anything at all about so far.

Unless I'm completely out of touch here, those are the pressing questions that remain unanswered, as opposed to whether there'll be more Twitch drops.

I mean, if I had their job, I'd be pretty cagey about saying anything unless I was sure of it too. They're stuck between a managerial team whose strategy seems to be "don't give any information until the update has already gone live, ever" and a community whose requests are "give us exacting details and accurate timelines about all of these demands immediately, and then hold to them perfectly or we will scream". That's a tough gig.

Yeah, i understand that, but if they are not going to engage with the community because they are afraid to say anything then why do their roles exist?

I appreciate its a tough gig, i certainly wouldn't want the job with entitled and the idiots that populate forums, but, at the end of the day, its there, in the job description, engage with the community. That's what they get paid for.

They must have known weeks ago they couldn't issue any statements, but they could have popped on the forums to say sorry, we can't tell anything at the moment and streams are cancelled for the moment, so please hang tight and we will update you as soon as we can.

And then, just to keep in touch with the community, pop into threads, let us know they are still watching and listening, and comment where they can and when they can.

Its almost like they can't post anything at all because management worry they might somehow accidentally let slip that EDO on consoles is cancelled or something.

Perhaps FD management need to have more trust in their CMs and let them do their job.

Just in case, simply saying the game is in maintenance mode until some time in the future where it will be looked at again would probably do alot to clear things up, if that is the case.
We know it isn't in "maintenance mode", they're doing Fleet Carrier interiors soon.
I must be a simple creature. I read "content expansions" and I'm happy and continue with my day.
And I read "our new streaming format when the series returns as a weekly show" and am similar.

This is sort of like picking up the ringing phone, only to hear absolutely nothing. I was "?" before this post, and now I'm "?!?".

A few questions:

Are there any plans for content that relates to flying spaceships in space, or is all the focus on FPS and fps?

What happened to engineering, and all those good suggestions?

What is the longer term plans for the game?

I would be naive to expect an answer, but slightly better communication would be appreciated.

Just going off what Arf said:
  • Commercial and tech discussions with Twitch in order to set up the TwitchDrops events.
  • Working up a schedule of weekly streams including their topics, guests and any surrounding events.
  • Setting back up their main office studio for streaming after a long period of streaming from home
  • Developing the new phase of narrative with the writing team and liaising with the dev team for any specific in game related impact or dev work necessary
  • Sitting with the dev team to get an understanding on what will be coming to Elite in terms of content, updates (performance improvements, issue tracker etc) in the coming months/year, so to plan any related comm campaigns
All that just based on the post from Arf. Pretty sure there are tons more behind the scenes we are just not privy to.

I don't see how even all that or more stops them making a few posts a day between the 4 of them.

Naturally! This very same message (which is essentially a fluff one, in honesty) could have been delivered at any time since they returned from Christmas / New Year Holidays, there is no mention of 'when' the future streams or content are due, so no commitment to anything. (which is fine and expected)

Even a mention that communication would be less for the first month or so of the year would have given a useful message.

It was mentioned that they shall resume streaming once back into the office... and what they would communicate during the streams will depend on solving some internal affairs.

Sounded that way... 🤔
Look you guys, be patient. It is a lot of work returning to work.
Most manf/production (as did I) kept going throughout, but the office staff were working from home with zoom etc.
Our offices are even now returning, but in phases, and the same will be happening with FD.
You saw Sally's living room tweets? and the December streams were good.
They are now organizing the move back to the FD office whilst at the same time working on update 11, I should hope.

With my particular company, with work/social distancing still in place to some extent, we can no longer fit everyone back into the same work space as before 2020 and is taking a great deal of organizing.

It appears that derailing a thread about other games streaming schedule is the only way to prompt communcation in the ED forums.

So I take it that we have you to thank for getting anything from ED CM's. Thankyou.

I don't blame you, for it being a circular announcement which says absolutely nothing, but at least its something. Once again thanx
