Upgrading, G2 or Valve Index (or something else)?

No you don't need any special software. Unlike Oculus, Pimax etc, plugging in a WMR headset is like plugging in a Microsoft mouse. It will just instantly recognise it and start using it.

Its worth to set up in the WMR portal/Windows all settings to max/high and 90Hz to avoid some auto switching and graphics degradation.

Well the G2 arrived at 9am today. And it's DOA
I plugged it into a DP on the back of my Nvidia 2080. This same port had a 28" monitor on it that I switched to HDMI to make room for the G2. I plugged the USB connector into the USB-A on the back of the 2080. I've never used that so not sure if it would work. Then the headset didn't power up so first thing I did was put on the USB-C adapter and plug it into a USB on the computer. Still dead. I had heard on a video that sometimes you needed a powered USB strip. So I tried that. Still dead. The power cable is plugged into the small box, the white light is on. I even switched to a different power plug just in case. The other end of the DP/USB cable is firmly attached to the headset. I've seen videos where that was an issue. I guess next step is to call HP support unless someone has an idea.

Definately call HP or return it and order again to get faster replacement.
In meantime of waiting for delivery guy i would suggest to check in different PC, but probably its unfortunately dead.

Definitely store return, you don't want to deal with HP support if you don't have to. Their clumsiness and VR non-awareness is legendary. My friend received the G2 recently and both speakers died almost immediately - he was not able to reach anyone in support, waiting times also legendary (Poland, he waited over an hour).

I ordered it directly from the HP website so no store to return it to. 20 minutes and I can't even find a phone number to call, I do have a document that came with it for all the countries in Central/South America but not the USA.

How easy is the G2 to lift up or remove to look at a side monitor?

it is doable. i tend to avoid it but i wear glasses which get in the way.

i guess you have done your market/spec research on g2/index. index will give you better refresh rate and has knuckles, g2 will give you more resolution and the controllers are a bit meh, both will need a 3080 to bring that to significant levels, other than that they're both excellent headsets and quite similar. imo index will be better suited for roomscale and twitchy action games, g2 better suited for sitting in a cockpit and looking at stars. also the index is significantly more expensive, and i'm not quite sure there is a real reason for such a high difference.

i have a g2 and run it on a 1080ti since current 3080s are still made of antimatter, and i'm simply not going to shell out 1.5-2k for a new graphics card, nvidia can stuff their cards and their cheap market manipulation tactics for now, if this lasts a while longer they are gonna loose another customer to amd. so i'm not getting everything i could from the g2, but i have to say it runs surprisingly well on the 1080ti without much tweaking and is already a massive improvement over my previous cv1.

One nuisance with my current Dell WMR VR is when I start the game in full screen windowed after a VR session the graphics settings have to be changed back or I get a tiny screen on my 34" wide screen center monitor

wmr opens its own window, it's redundant but tiny and separate from elite's, and you can't get rid of it. i guess you can make elite's as large as you want, even fullscreen or spanning several monitors (what you can't is make it tiny, i used to set it to 640x480 but elite keeps ignoring the setting every time so i just let it be.

Finally found a number for HP and it wasn't that bad getting thru to a human. Spent 45 minutes with a tech rep trying different stuff with no luck. He suggested trying my old desktop, so I drug that out of the closet and made all the connections with the same result. The small power adapter has a white light on but the G2 doesn't have a light on in the front between the cameras and neither computer saw any new device connected. Probably one of two things: The USB cable is bad, or the G2 headset has something wrong with it. Will call back and see what they want to do, either send a new cable or RMA the whole thing.

Sorry for the dumb question, but was the USB you plugged into USB 3.0? I think it needs that. I'm asking because mine should be here tomorrow.

Yes, I initially tried the small USB connection on the back of the Nvidia 2080, then put the adapter on and tried numerous other USB ports including one on a powered USB. I'm getting ready to RMA it, replacement not until late March they say so I'll ask for a refund. I may order another one, I ordered this one Monday and it arrived Thursday morning.

Edit: 40 minutes on hold with Customer support so far. HP website shows the G2 out of stock again. I realized my gaming laptop had a small video port which fit the Display Port adapter HP provided. So I hooked up the G2 and..nada. Dead. Laptop acted like there wasn't anything connected. I did notice the small power adapter's white light came on soon as I plugged in the USB cable so I don't think it's a bad cable. The headset itself must be defective. Since they're out of stock again I may be back to the Q2 or Index.

you may contact voodooimax from reddit - its a helpful guy from HP, maybe he will be able to push something - as far i know he helped few people with their RMA

Sorry to hear that man. If mine is DOA, I'll ask for a RMA/replacement and wait. Everyone deserves a second chance, right? If #2 is DOA, it'll be a refund. Then I'll wait for the next nice headset from whoever releases something new. At this point, an Index doesn't feel like a good investment.

Once you have seen stuff at 100% in the G2 you can't go back.

This post got me to order the G2 :) it should arrive tomorrow!

Would you mind sharing your settings? If it's not to much to ask.

I also have a 3090 but i have never even tried VR so I'm at a loss in what program to change the settings in. In ED, WMR or in Steam?

Anyways, thanks again for that post! I'm so damn excited for tomorrow \o/

FIXED. It was the USB cable connection to the headset. It was very difficult to get it firmly seated. I had watched the video I'll link below the other day. While I was on hold trying to get a RMA for TWO freaking hours I watched the video again and noticed the index mark on the connector was further in than on mine. So I did a lot of jiggling and pushing and it finally seated. Then the G2 came to life.

Now I need to figure out how to get ED to play on it. What I did with the Dell WMR was just start ED from the Steam Library and select VR mode. But that's not working, it still starts on the screen.

Here's the troubleshooting video:

When I figure out how to start ED in VR mode I'll let you know LOL.

IDK with WMR, but maybe try starting SteamVR first from steam? And check if WMR for Steam is still installed? It's weird as you already had it working...

Re: USB cable - man do I have a similar story. I was one of the lucky ones to receive a MSI Trio 3080 after two months of waiting and the temps were off, so was fan2 speed - 0. I looked into the case and to my dismay last fan was not spinning. What was even weirder, it started spinning at reboot, then when trying to put card under load it just turned itself off and required another reboot to operate. Two days of frustration, calling the store trying to get a replacement from new batch was impossible, they told me that of course they will honour the replacement request but I will be dropped to the end of queue because that was treated as a new order. I decided to RMA it for repair to MSI. When I was getting the card out of the case, I gave it a "one last look" and noticed that one of the fan cables wasn't firmly seated in the socket. It was conducting on low loads, but on higher - no dice. Just pushed the connector firmly into the socket - it WORKED. Glad you sorted your HMD too!

I got ED to run in VR by launching it from the "recent apps" wall in the SteamVR house. Had to fumble and find the hand controller then wake it up to point. Maybe now launching it from Steam Library with "play in VR" will work.

Question, I have not changed any settings yet. When I move my head in the game I get a fair amount of jitter. Screen is very sharp when I'm not moving my head. I don't have a FPS showing, that could be it and maybe I need to reduce some settings? Or could there be another cause for the jitter?

Edit: I have a 4yr old i7 system with a NVidia 2080 GPU. I've read on these messages that until I can get a 3080 or better I might need to turn down settings a little bit. I'll look for that info again.

Fixed the jittering problem. In the WMR software under settings I have:
Visual Quality: Automatic
Resolution: 4320x2160
Mixed Reality Display Res: Automatic. This is what fixed the jittering I think, it was on 4320x2160 and I don't think a NVidia 2080 can handle that.

Brilliant stuff dude! Glad you got it sorted.

So, how are you finding that sharp goodness? :)

Are you also enjoying the feeling, like I do with mine, of knowing that your headset is future proof for a good couple of years because it still can't be run at native? When you upgrade your GPU, your headset will upgrade too. I never felt that with any of my other headsets.

Have fun!

Good headsetet worked!

I have the quality and all visual settings set to:
1) detail level: high
2) preview window of application - 720p
3) function options - best visual quality
4) fps - 90Hz

Of course :)

1) Enable WMR Motion Vector Reprojection.

C:\Steam\steamapps\common\MixedRealityVRDriver\resources\settings\default.vrsettings (or whichever drive your Steam library is located)

Code:
// Motion reprojection doubles framerate through motion vector extrapolation
// motionvector = force application to always run at half framerate with motion vector reprojection
// auto = automatically use motion reprojection when the application can not maintain native framerate
// disabled = turn off motion reprojection
//
// Comment out or remove this line to use the SteamVR settings for controlling motion reprojection
        "motionReprojectionMode" : "disabled",

Set that to :

Code:
// Motion reprojection doubles framerate through motion vector extrapolation
// motionvector = force application to always run at half framerate with motion vector reprojection
// auto = automatically use motion reprojection when the application can not maintain native framerate
// disabled = turn off motion reprojection
//
// Comment out or remove this line to use the SteamVR settings for controlling motion reprojection
        "motionReprojectionMode" : "auto",

2) Setup WMR.

In Windows Mixed Reality Settings (accessible through the triple dot in the bottom left hand corner of WMR Portal start screen)

Under the Headset Display options set the following :

Experience Options : Best Visual Quality
Resolution : 4320 x 2160 (best quality)
Framerate : 90hz
Input switching : Manually switch using the Windows logo key + Y

3) Now we have all the basics sorted we can go into Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR and set the render target (accessible through the Graphics tab in Settings which can be accessed through the 3 lines icon in the top left of SteamVR for WMR)

Resolution Per Eye : 3164 x 3096 (100%)

4) Finally we can go into Elites graphic options...

Use custom settings (do not use a preset they are garbage) and turn everything up to Ultra

Disable Anti Aliasing
Set Supersampling to 1.0
Set HMD Quality to 1.0

This will get you started for trading, mining and general flying around.

If you want to do some combat in asteroid fields you will need to change the refresh rate to 60hz in WMR settings as even with reprojection its not a fluid experience with the pipeline setup at this render target.
