While Yamiks' video is pretty hilarious, this whole thread makes my head hurt. The OP title and what he is really suggesting are two completely different things. And to make it worse, 95% of the responses to this thread are also not understanding it.
The game is ALREADY free-to-play, meaning there are no reoccurring charges one has to pay after the game is installed and an account set up. There is a distinct difference between a subscription based or MMO game that has gone Free-to-play, and any non-subscription game where the only cost is the initial license fee (purchasing the game).
What Yamiks IS on about here, he is suggesting that ED's base game become free to download and free to set up an account. No monetary barrier to make a new CMDR and play the base game.
The obvious bad things that would happen if what he is suggesting comes to pass, FAR outweigh any possible benefits that may occur. When you drop any vested interest in something (in this case, a MP game), it becomes unimportant and usually abused because there is no risk for bad behavior. It also becomes exponentially harder to support from a CS perspective. Tickets will take weeks to answer because there will be a massive influx to answer, and no more agents to handle them. I've seen this all before, many times.
Making ED "completely free" would be a disaster.
