[video] Should Elite Dangerous go FREE TO PLAY ?!

While Yamiks' video is pretty hilarious, this whole thread makes my head hurt. The OP title and what he is really suggesting are two completely different things. And to make it worse, 95% of the responses to this thread are also not understanding it.

The game is ALREADY free-to-play, meaning there are no reoccurring charges one has to pay after the game is installed and an account set up. There is a distinct difference between a subscription based or MMO game that has gone Free-to-play, and any non-subscription game where the only cost is the initial license fee (purchasing the game).

What Yamiks IS on about here, he is suggesting that ED's base game become free to download and free to set up an account. No monetary barrier to make a new CMDR and play the base game.

The obvious bad things that would happen if what he is suggesting comes to pass, FAR outweigh any possible benefits that may occur. When you drop any vested interest in something (in this case, a MP game), it becomes unimportant and usually abused because there is no risk for bad behavior. It also becomes exponentially harder to support from a CS perspective. Tickets will take weeks to answer because there will be a massive influx to answer, and no more agents to handle them. I've seen this all before, many times.

Making ED "completely free" would be a disaster.

P.S.
Instead of just saying NO and ending it there, add some of your thoughts & reasoning..this is made for discussion after all!
No.

I am not watching the video and I know its already a stupid argument because its clear as day you don't realize how much better the model FDev is using right now.

A typical F2P model will be a death sentence for this game if they do that.

If Fdev could make more money through F2p then I see no reason why not, on the PC version at any rate.

More players is a good thing, as is Fdev making money such that the game remains supported for as long as possible.

With Horizons and engineering it is already pay to win, there's little comparison between a fully engineered ship and a base one. So anyone who is worried about hobos in haulers sticking them up... I think it would add to the fun myself. It isn't as though we're going to run out of stars to house any influx...

Frankly the time invested is far greater than the monetary cost anyway. I doubt many have paid more than a few pence per hour whether they bought it on sale or full price.

It isn't as though current players would even know whether the hollow square had paid, though maybe something long the lines of limiting free players to small ships or sub 1 million ones might be an idea to enhance the chances of an actual purchase. I doubt Fdev would be putting a tramp sticker on their sidewinders. :)

Ads on station approach, cosmetics, future season passes... There's all sorts of income streams they could generate from free players assuming the architecture is scalable.

More Cobras rather than Anacondas in the Galaxy... What's not to like? For every 1000 players who spend 20 hours trying to figure the basics out how many wouldn't buy something?

Space is quite big and the more people in it the better.

Definitely
100%
Absolutely
Positively

No....No....No....No....No....

No way should ED be free to play..(pay to win)
