VKB 2 stage trigger question

I cannot really remember right now, but I think at some point I used the first stage on the right stick as UI select and the second one as primary fire (needing to do a full pull to prevent accidental fire); but right now it might also be I just use the first stage as primary for a more sensitive, I would have to look it up. I use the second stage on the left stick to deploy hardpoints and the first stage not at all. With a single stick setup you could do it similarly, first stage as fire, pulling all the way through to deploy HP. Although retracting them would mean you need to fire a shot :).

My experiments in using the second stage as an alternative secondary fire button were curtailed by HCS Voicpacks needing to have a keyboard assignment for secondary fire - so now the second stage in stick and Omnithrottle are unused.

Not VKB, but on the Warthog I use the 2nd stage as secondary fire, with secondary fire also bound to the button on the stick.

By using the Target software 1st Stage is set to Left Mouse and 2nd stage/button to Right Mouse which allows the mouse buttons to be used as well and still leaves an in-game assignment free for a keyboard key if needed. I assume that VKB have a similar program for use with their sticks.

Is anybody using the 2-stage trigger for 2 separate functions? just curious as to how you've bound the triggers.

Very much so! I have the following for the Kosmosima:
  • Main trigger first stage is primary fire.
  • Main trigger second stage is secondary fire.
  • Upper trigger reverse is also secondary fire (seldom used).
Admittedly this excludes the ability to hold secondary while tapping primary, but that aside:
  • For bounty-hunting and most other combat versus Human targets, I hold the first stage for weapons with damage over time (e.g. Beam), and tap the second stage for volleys (e.g. Fragment Cannons). Here are some samples from early 3308 and mid-3308.
  • For combat versus Thargoid targets, at present I hold the first stage to charge Plasmas, and tap the second stage for Shards. With Gauss, I used the two stages as a means of staggering the shots over time to make best use of a heat sink.
Before I started using a Cytoscrambler, I would place a Rail Gun on the same trigger as the Fragment Cannons, so I could also hold for a Rail Gun shot. I know I switched fire group there with only the Rail Gun on secondary, but please note that my main group (C) had both.

The omni throttle is my next purchase.
I was actually a bit worried about how it was going to work vs a normal style throttle. I used the included block-off plate and removed the centering return spring so I'd have one long axis and it's awesome. It works just like any other standard throttle and you can set the tension as tight or loose as you like. I just use the base button to put it into reverse mode. I also use the twist axis as up and down thrust since it's oriented that way.

You'll be very pleased with it.

I'm looking forward to using it with the twist for up and down, the Y axis for strafe left and right. Right now, I use the finger axis on my TWCS throttle to do that. I believe the omni throttle will have a longer throw and be much more precise than the TWCS. When I got my VKB rudder pedals I was amazed at how much more precise and sensitive they were over the T Flight pedals. I had so much more control, it is so much more enjoyable to fly or drive the SRV. Landing should be an order of a magnitude better than I currently have.

I just got my setup going on two weeks ago, so I'm still getting used to it and playing with different setups. I'm not even using half the buttons on either controller yet.

But you're right about the precision. It makes it harder to do some things, but so much easier to do others. I imagine in time it will become second nature and be much easier.

I'm going to have to look in to those rudder pedals. I'm trying to get into a good flight sim. I've given DCS a go, but mother of God the 2.75 million keyboard commands it takes just to start up a plane is intimidating as hell.
No doubt! Beyond the fact that it is a full on sim. I tried it for a while flying the P-51D but it was a bit over the top for me, like FALCON 4.0 from years ago. I do occasionally fly in MS flight simulator, it's cool because I can fly in places I either have flown or know or want to visit. But DCS for me was just too technical and not very interesting to just fly around in.
I flew dual sticks in Star Citizen, but not enough buttons to bind on the sticks when you use the T16000m sticks. Flying like that was awesome.
Tried that in Elite but was also frustrated by the lack of buttons, so I went back to the throttle.

My experiments in using the second stage as an alternative secondary fire button were curtailed by HCS Voicpacks needing to have a keyboard assignment for secondary fire - so now the second stage in stick and Omnithrottle are unused.
I use the voice packs as well. Looking for a new one that is less informal, more professional in it's responses to commands, I have Orion.

Yes, I use both stages for primary and secondary fire. Of course, you'll need to bind secondary fire to another button to trigger your second weapon seperately. Depending on the situation and the loadout, pulling the trigger all the way back to fire all you have can be really satisfying. My usual setup:
  • Primary Fire: fire trigger stage 1
  • Secondary Fire: fire trigger stage 2 & button A2
On my left omni throttle, I don't use an axis for throttle. Instead, all axes are bound to thrusters. So, during combat I just set my throttle to 50% via button and then manage thrusters with the 3 grip axes. That works exceptionally well for me. Also, with 6 very precise axes and the throttle set to 0, tricky landings are a lot easier now. So I've come up with these bindings for my left stick to manage the throttle:
  • Throttle -100% (full reverse): long press button B1
  • Throttle 0% (all stop): short press button B1
  • Throttle 50%: pull rapid fire (B2)
  • Throttle 75%: push rapid fire (B2)
  • Decrease throttle continuously: button A2
  • Increase throttle continuously: fire trigger stage 1
  • Throttle 100%: fire trigger stage 2
So, to continuously increase the throttle, I pull the trigger to stage 1, but if I want 100% instantly, I pull the trigger all the way to stage 2. You can see the whole shebang in the attached file.

Another rather unusual thing you could do, if you travel a lot:
  • Target next system in route: fire trigger stage 1
  • Hyperspace jump: fire trigger stage 2
I haven't tried this yet, but with the analogue ministicks of both grips, on-foot combat might be as precise as with a gamepad. There, you could bind “Open Item Wheel” to stage 1 and “Open Emote Wheel” to stage 2 on the left stick.

Nice, thanks a lot for the diagram, gives me some good ideas. I think that I'd switch the function of the A3 buttons because that is what I'm used to. I love the fact that pretty much everything is on the sticks.
One question I have is do you actually turn off/on the rotational correction?
