Guide / Tutorial Voice Controlling Elite:Dangerous - A Guide

Interesting. Can you use these for voice chat also? Or is the quality bad? Any recorded voice samples?

I haven't tested one for myself, but as far as I know the primary problem of throat microphones is, that they do not actually pick up sounds in the sense of 'sound' from the air, but vibration from where the ... well ... "microphones" touch you throat. According to rumors more "high-endish" throat microphones have improved on that, but if you order a low cost consumer model on the web I would not expect it to record anything that is generated higher than your throat. For example "System" might end up to be somewhat close to "_y_tem" because the two "s" are voiceless, though I don't know how extensive that would be.

The other problems can be seen in reviews: Some report a bad fit for their neck and some models seem to be very sensitive to contact with clothes.

Still, the concept is intriguing. (I might even consider ordering one just to try it, but since I neither own nor have ordered a HOTAS or an Oculus Rift yet my personal priorities for saving up money are elsewhere right now. ;) )

Here's a sample of voice recorded with a throat mic (aka layrngophone).

I'm in discussion with a guy at the VA forum about using one of these mics. The guy there is going to test out a throat mic soon to see if it works with VoiceAttack okay. You can follow my forum conversation with him here. I'll update you when I know more about this.

It's important to note that there are throat mics on the market that are not really throat mics at all, but are just a normal open-air mic, such as the xbox throat mic - that one is phoney.

He he, isn't it just. Welcome to the wonderful world of "talking to your ship" :)

On another note.... OMG my voice attack video made the newsletter. I nearly passed out from shock!

Do I qualify for a lovely Jumper? :D

Yeah well demonstrated. Its clearly a huge advantage in game or during combat. I think I might have to buy this. I was undecided before but in order to compete with other pilots in combat this is turning out to be a must have..

So how does this work for items that's have no keyboard bindings? I.e. Those only accessible from the UI panels? E.g. Turning off radar or power distribution or life support?

That video is pretty good Robbie. Do you know if the guy is sharing his VA profile for that set up.

I don't have alpha or beta access unfortunately so have to wait until release. There seems to be quite complex commands occurring. I was curious how the left and right on screen menus are accessed and options selected.

You can access the left and right screens using commands. I had a go trying to move the higlighted field up and down to select / de-select stuff but couldnt quite figure it out.

Agreed, I would love to get those commands added to the profile Flak has already provided.

Hi there.

I haven't managed to work out how to get the text of the Commands out of Voice Attack yet but I'm thinking of doing another video showing how to put the commands together.

In the meantime this is the list of commands that I put together to get a Cobra Mk3 to drop its Shields in the side panel (It also powers down the Cargo Hatch). You have to have the systems panel up already for it to work.

The most important thing are the pauses. It wont move to the right place or select the correct part of the panel without them. I experimented with different times periods but 0.1 or 0.05 seconds seems to be about right.

The coolest thing for me was getting the ship to speak back to you confirming what it was doing. Simple I know but then I'm probably easily pleased that way! :)

Hope this helps!

Edit: Actually when I look at it now its really untidy with different length pauses, I'll have to go back in a sort it out now!

Thats useful thanks.

Heres how you export:
Export_for_VA.png

You can then open the file and see the commands

Cheers, I managed to export the file ok, I had to as the commands for a Sidewinder don't all work in a Cobra MkIII, so I have two profiles that I swap when changing ships. I just can't open the file to view them as a text. :)

Wow! Been away from this thread for a while as there didn't seem to be much interest. Am pleasantly surprised that more people are now using VA and enjoying what it can offer :D

To answer a couple of questions, yes I did write the guide and it took a few evenings and most of a weekend to get the first version out. The other updates didn't take too long to do - maybe a couple of evenings at the most.

Was great fun to do, and really pleased that others are finding it helpful :D

This thread got me interested in VA. Im a bit of a sucker for a well written guide so thank you.

Well I'm very new to all this and am really happy I've discovered this. Top banana for making the thread Flak :)

@Spiggs - your video and set up looked like it works really well. Can I ask if your ready to share it yet. Or are you refining some more first.

And from what you said about having to use two profiles, I wonder if VA can have a feature to voice activate swapping VA profiles. Unless it does have this already. Then you'd just need to speak it, and not waste a hotkey or tab out. Maybe someone could suggest it to the dev. 'Profile Switch' 'Cobra one' etc.

@TheGoatee - Thanks for explaining :)
