VR - is there a difference?

I'm wondering how much difference I'd notice by upgrading my gear. I'm using an i-7-7700 280Ghz with 4 cores, 16GB's of RAM and a 1050 (yes a 1050, not a 1050ti) graphics card. The game's installed on an SSD drive. I'm using a Windows Mixed Reality Headset (Dell). This on a laptop which will not readily upgrade.

I get what I perceive to be fantastic performance. The game runs smoothly, the graphics are phenomenal, and I have no complaints. VR is AWESOME.

Will I be further blown away with a 1070 or 1080 graphics card or a higher quality headset? I don't really have any frame of reference to use for comparison. Do better graphics cards really improve the experience?

Thanks in advance.

It will be quite a bit better. Curious what your current settings are, and if you're always in reprojection. Your headset is actually fine, and is among the higher resolution headsets. What a better card would allow you to do is increase supersampling (HMD quality), which makes text much clearer, and things look sharper. Also, you'd be able to crank expensive but nice looking settings like shadows and terrain quality. Whether this is "blown away" territory is subjective. On my Rift, 1.5 HMD is a massive difference from 1.0. It won't be as extreme in your headset since you have more pixels, but should still look significantly better. And who doesn't like nice shadows?

If you are happy I’d wait. Take it from the guy with six headsets, three gaming rigs and a partridge in a pear tree - all for Elite Dangerous!

The difference between the top and where you are now will be minimal if your headset is working as intended. That said, my Pimax arrives this week ...

I started out on a 970 and an Oculus DK2 with Elite as I'm sure many of us here did.

Since then Ive used a 970/1080/1080Ti/2080Ti with a Rift/Vive Pro/5k+

VR is inherently magic regardless of hardware, but ive found that new toys have dramatically improved the wow factor for me over the years.

Vive PRO/Odyssey(+)/Pimax 5k is huuge step forward. But you need really good pc to get best results.

Being extremely honest, no, there will not be a HUGE difference.. But there will be subtle differences, for example, the Vive pro is awesome for text andcomfort, but requires a MUCH more powerful PC and a MUCH larger bank account...

In VR, if you want a significant increase, be prepared to pay a significant amount + another significant amount !!!

I have moved from a Rift to a Vive pro, visually the differences are the following...

Vive Pro
Pro's
* Much better colour reproduction
* text is easily readable
* Headset is extremely comfortable
* Far better for watching Movies or using the desktop, visually anyway... See dash comments below..
* Uses the Lighthouse 2 base stations, so larger play area and possibility of multiple headsets within the same area etc..

Cons
* Very expensive
* Wands are no where near as good or intuitive as he Touch controllers, sorry vive, but it's true
* Software ( SteamVR ) no where as good as oculus software, especially Dash.. As a result, I can no longer have a web page stream TV at my feet while cruising etc..
* Controller battery life is quite low and requires frequent recharging, I have purchased a charging stand for this purpose

Neither pro or con
* Learning curve is different
* some programs used in Oculus store are slightly different in SteamVR, mainly due to controllers
* Some/Most games will not transfer to steam VR and may need to be re-purchased, of course there are alternative methods, but performance suffers etc..

Lastly, VR is not a plug and play scenario, be prepared to devote significant time into playing with settings to get what you want, the more you play the better any headset will look and perform... just takes time and understanding, which is half of the fun :p

Yep same here a 980 and DK2 (2014) it was a constant battle to keep it where you wanted it but the folks on this forum were amazing at finding those fixes and at one point I have to say my DK2 was working amazing. Now a 1080 with the CV1 for 2 years - getting an itch for Vive Pro but wow at the price if you need the full kit.

Those were fun times! The tinkering was almost as fun as playing the actual game!

280Ghz? Holy crap!!!!

You should see CMDR Thrust of Bradfords 8Thz i13 rig...

On topic: i started VR with an overclocked GTX970 and switched to a 1080ti last year. It made everything look like awhole new game. The higher settings and more constant FpS really gave me back the initial wow and kept being convincing for me.

Those of you with the 1080TI you could almost sell that thing used and buy a 2080 TI. I found 2 new 1080TI's going for 1300 USD dollars which is more than the 1199 for a 2080TI. Thats incredible really proven to be a great card
