VR - Oculus or Vive?

As has been stated several times already, either solution should work fine with ED at this point in time with no obvious in-game benefits currently for EITHER solution.

That being said, the next question should probably be what other factors are relevant to the OP's decision?
  1. The OP appears to not need their HMD solution to be easily re-locatable - this makes one of the key benefits of the Rift irrelevant
  2. If the OP believes they will never have a use for hand tracking technology in the near future then the Rift HMD on it's own could offer a potential cost saving at this specific point in time - if the cost for both the baseline CV1 and the VIVE are roughly the same in their area then the VIVE is probably the more cost effective option IMO.
  3. The VIVE's camera feature may be useful to the OP if they need to be able to see their immediate environment easily at a moment's notice - e.g. animals or kids entering the real world space. This feature may not be critical but it may be a factor worth considering as adjusting any HMD to be comfortable again after removing it to briefly observe the real world environment may be inconvenient with either solution.
  4. If the OP has a particular neck problems then the Rift's lighter weight may be a factor - though personally after using the VIVE for extended periods with my own neck/back concerns I have not found the VIVE problematic or uncomfortable despite the higher weight (other people may find the Rift more comfortable but I have not noticed any difference with the short periods I have used the Rift for).
  5. If the OP wishes to support Open VR gaming/application development then the VIVE is the obvious choice at this time - although both HMD devices currently have titles that only support one device or the other the VIVE seems to take a more open and less proprietary approach.
  6. If the OP is concerned which solution is winning/losing the VR war then they will have to look at the various articles on the internet. However, this article on Daily Dot claims the VIVE has the edge but there could be other articles that indicate the situation is the other way round.
Overall though, such matters are probably largely irrelevant when ED is specifically concerned at this time.

Wait until 2050 and all this VR stuff will be 2nd nature. Oh wait a minute, I'll be dead by then. It is quite likely that my next HMD will be something we haven't seen yet and could well be made by neither Oculus or Vive. Since I am a pc gamer, I buy (like most of us) a new gpu every 2 or 3 years. Something that will likely be the MO with VR, now that it is the only way to play for this gamer. One can wait and wait or get one of the 2 amazing currently supported headsets for ED. Personally, I would not want to have missed this opportunity to play with this cutting edge tech. Life is to short, not to reward oneself with a few guilty pleasures. Elite in VR is, if nothing else, an absolutely guilty pleasure and like the vast majority, I am glad I bought in despite that I will likely toss my Rift to a needy relative in a couple of years or so for the next "must have" version of VR. Tis the nature of this damn hobby we all love.

I'll second that! Just had my first alien encounter in the Rift ... holy crap, it was frickin' awesome! New trousers please!!
