Question: Any tips on star selection in Galaxy Map?

Thanks.

Its hard work for a lot of people I think. Ive played in VR on and off for a while now and still find it difficult to select a star for destination. It does not help the fact that you can use key+mouse, rift controllers, HOTAS or game pad to play. All work a little differently on gal map.

But yea if VR wasnt so WOW id play flatscreen all the time for the very reason that galmap is so awkward in VR.

Use your joystick, you might need to mess around with the bindings to get it feeling natural, but it snaps to stars quite well once you get the hang of it.

It's wonderful to play *most* aspects of this game in VR ...however, anything having to do with the Galaxy map -- especially route plotting for any distance and/or to distant stars whose location you don't know ahead of time -- is so abysmally clunky that if you can't find the home keys and touch type with phenomenal accuracy it's faster to lift off your headset and type it out on a keyboard, then drop the headset back into place. When you do this, you'll probably want some easily invoked hot-key or button mapped to recenter your headset view so you don't have to exit Elite Dangerous, go back to the Oculus client, and do that (I have no idea if other VR headset implementations force this on you the way Oculus does, so that if you remove the headset and don't put it back on with your head in the exact same position, your viewpoint shifts askew).

I don't know what setup other folks have, but attempting to use the mouse while in VR more often than not can result in your deselecting your active window, after which point you've got some real issues trying to get back on track without removing your headset (at least, that's the way it is on my system, running Oculus, where you usually cannot even SEE a mouse cursor in your headset).

Ultimately, what's needed is some copy/paste or in-game keyboard that can be pulled up (also would help text chat for those flying without voice comms, eh?).

There have been some attempts by third parties to address this problem with a solution that can provide an overlay showing where your hands are over your keyboard, but I don't think any have gotten off the ground, yet. The requirement to type efficiently inside VR is, IMO, one of the larger issues slowing adoption (so this is not at all strictly an Elite Dangerous problem).

Using either your controller or HOTAS make sure you map out the Galactic Map controls to something like the hats or whatever you find works for you. The real tip is to make sure you have the grid switch on, and tilt your view so you are looking downward at an angle. The systems will have lines leading to the grid, allowing you to select them.

Yes, definitely bind the galaxy map stuff to a hat on a stick, I find that works ok. Could use a revamp, but it's usable. It annoyed me for months until I realized what I was doing wrong in navigating it.

I can't play Elite on a monitor. VR all the way. Can't wait for more resolution and wide FOV to go with atmospheric worlds!

Map your axis to the axis you want to control on the galaxy map. It's a little awkward but works well enough.

Map your axis to the axis you want to control on the galaxy map. It's a little awkward but works well enough.

I saw that video some time ago, and while having those mappings can help for nearby and otherwise well-marked stars, ultimately (as the video author points out around the 8-minute mark of the video) you're virtually required to use the physical keyboard, which really stinks as a UI requirement for VR. There's virtually no other way to efficiently go to distant star (even something only 100-200ly away) that's not already highlighted or bookmarked, without typing.

I've got the GalMap bound to my HOTAS controls. Joystick for tilt and rotate. A hat switch for moving the reticule horizontally. Another hat-switch for moving it vertically and zooming in/out.

For mission related systems etc you can just jump straight to the destination through the mission interface.
For systems I visit regularly I set up a bookmark and/or a Voice Attack macro for.

If I just want to go "somewhere" (as in, exploring and setting my next destination), I use this procedure:

* First thing is to tilt the GalMap (why it always starts off edge-on is beyond me, PLEASE can we have a setting??) so that you can see the grid.

* Next zoom out and scroll until you've got your destination more or less centered on screen, then zoom back in and scroll the map up/down until the little "stick" and circle of your target system show up on the grid.

* Finally scroll until your reticule snaps to the circle of the system you're interested in. The above video shows it better.

Finally to go to a named system, pretty much the only thing to do is to type it in. So either get good at touch-typing, or use a virtual keyboard (you can use one via the Oculus Rift Dash, but it's not great; we need to keep petitioning FDev to give us a proper one).

Hmm this is a bit of a bummer. I'd been thinking about getting a VR headset this christmas, but given the amount of time one spends in the galmap (and with the coming changes, in the local map as well), I'm wondering if it's going to be worth the 400+ USD if I need to take it off half the time.

I presume your using oculus touch? There is a way to bind a spare control axis and button combo to UI up,down, left, right. I used A button on touch right.

The standard touch settings should be fine for moving around the map, but to select a star click A and to move around the UI click A while moving the left stick around.

It's a bit difficult to explain, but it's the best I could come up with - the only real problem is that...not easy to describe...but image your in the galaxy panel, left hand side, picking which commodity trade route to show. So to move up/down through the list of commodities just use A left stick up/down and then click A to select.

Oh, and when you first arrive in galaxy map, your at a funny angle, so move up to show a better angle on the star selector circle.

It would be nice if FDEV actually bothered to set this up themselves - it would probably work better.

Either that, or use an xbox controller.

Don't even bother trying with keyboard or mouse.

So to repeat vague instructions, you want to bind UI up/down/left/right to A and left stick.

It's a bit late here, so probably not explaining it too well. If you msg me I'll try and get a better guide tomorrow somewhen.

I prefer the map in VR to the normal one, feels more natural to navigate. I use hotas and kind of fly around in it ... Joystick rotates and coolie hat moves laterally. Works great for me.

I have the X56 HOTAS. I use the two mini analog sticks and one of the dials for zoom. Works good if I didn't have the mini sticks I would bind them to hats.

For VR navigation, it’s easy to select bookmarks using the mouse. Other than that, I’m pretty hopeless navigating the galaxy map in my Oculus.

What I’ve been doing is bookmarking the places I want to go in 2D for use in VR. It’s clunky, but I’m mainly a point-to-point trader so once I’ve set a port on my trade route, the bookmark is always available.

Just experiment and map things to your liking, don't think there is a right or wrong answer, I use a combination of mouse/HOTAS, many VR users swear that mouse is a pain to use, works perfectly for me.

voice attack also helps to automate things. Here's a very old video I made

I use the little joystick on the TWCS throttle to pan horizontally and vertically, the little up-down switch just to the left on the stick for zoom, and the main joystick (T.16000M) for pitch and yaw in the galmap. Top left button on the stick to select, and the hat to navigate menus. Works like a dream.

I never take my headset off when playing Elite. If you look down at your nose, there's a small gap that allows you to see your keyboard. You can type just fine.

The most annoying thing is that Elite almost requires you to use external websites. I have no idea why adding eddb.io search features is not a priority. But with Dash 2.0, you can bring up your desktop in VR and use a virtual keyboard. You can also place a YouTube video window in your cockpit for those long boring trips.

Wow! I learned something new from this video. You can cut and paste the system names after you search eddb.io. Remembering the names was a real pain.

Not with all headsets - and if they do have that gap I would consider it a design flaw personally. The VIVE/VIVE Pro does not have that attribute - assuming you have fitted the headset properly.
