VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

Be respectful to me and i will be respectful to you (not you personally RC!)
Oooo... I could make something of that wording... But, of course, I won't. I know what you are saying.
remember at one point in this thread (i think it was) we were told to assume no VR support at all in Odyssey, even in ship or SRV.
It was a few months on in this thread when Frontier announced that EDO would support VR identically to Horizons. Which has been a bone of contention, for some, since.

Interestingly, another game studio had so much disrespect, toxicity and hate from their "avid fans" that they posted, on their own forum that they would not be releasing their next offering with VR support, they just didn't want the grief from those who consider they weren't doing it right...

What I got from reading that post (I wish I could find it again) was that there are some VR owners who consider themselves exceptionally special, and what goes along with that is exceptional arrogance, doesn't it?

Sounds awfully like the 230 pages here, slights to the developers, tantrums (just go back and read the first 50 pages of whining) and so on...

What did this chap have to say about VR in early Elite Dangerous?

…we designed the game to support head mounted displays anyway from the start…”

In other interviews D. B. said a single dev (Greg, if I recall correctly) was able to get a basic VR implementation up and running in a very short time (in the order of days) - less time than it would’ve taken to produce a business case for developing VR in ED. If anyone thinks this amounted to the sum total of VR development for ED, I’ll just raise an eyebrow to them 🤨

Thank you very much.

Shame the bot didn't share that :)

So it seems that Horizons is what you're looking for if you want a VR experience!
I’m sure it’s good to know epoch5 wasn’t re-writing history to make a point 👍

Horizons is indeed something to look at if you want a VR experience, a very good one too in my opinion. Odyssey is quite stunning in VR too, if you have beefy enough hardware and can look past the myriad issues - using the camera suite to enable full-VR on foot is pretty cool. Hopefully FDev will expand on it in the future.

From what I remember, Greg was mentioned before the interview with Braben where he talked about VR being supported from the ground up. I also vaguely remember earlier interviews with Braben where he complained about the non standardization of VR. So all in all I formed the impression that Braben was initially sceptical about VR, then got persuaded into it by a few devs and then kind of jumped on the bandwagon so to speak, when he saw how little it cost compared to the PR benefit.
However, we are now in a situation where it’s not a few days work to get it working in ODY, and it would only serve to highlight the still poor performance, especially minimum frame times, that need to be high for a decent VR experience.

Correct! (As always).

On the flipside though - Braben did also mention low resolution as a stopper for VR back in 2014/2015 ish. That is one aspect that has come a long way. Just the jump i resolution from my CV1 to the Rift S did lots to make the experience much much better. I would only imagine the experience in a Quest2 or Reverb to be even better.

Yes, there is the issue of GFX power and the current world shortage of chips. But the HMD's have evolved alot.

Tldr; Elite look great in yesterdays headsets - most likely stunning in todays HMD's.
