VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

looking at what they did with Odyssey
The point is that, if each of the 'promises' were integrated into the game, no matter how poorly implemented, the LEP / Backers would have had the content promised. The game could die gracelessly soon after.

I play EDO exclusively, in my opinion it has improved the game massively. But... I never play it exclusively in VR.

HG isn't publicly traded, which probably explains why they could knuckle down and fix the game over a period of time.
It also sold a massive number of copies (and still, apparently, does - even if most of the time it can be bought for £20) which generated sufficient revenue for the small team to continue comfortably.

EDO lost money, around £6 million, wasn't it?

I don't need to explain how corporate business works, more spending is highly unlikely to be approved.

Although, if DBOBE put his hand into his pocket and funded a large dev team for 3 years, then all of those 'promises' could be fulfilled, surely?
Of course, this all depends on how likely Braben is to engage again with the product his success is based on.

At this point, he could be saying "I got mine!" and never again return as he collects stock dividends.

In any case, I agree it's highly unlikely Frontier will be devoting slush funds to a "failed project" if it didn't meet the revenue expectations originally set by the Board. It's also hugely speculative as a discussion, but most are when you don't have all the facts/answers sitting in front of you.

I'm not a finance person, but that's not quite what amortisation means, is it?

Anyway, your overall point stands. Odyssey most likely didn't bring in enough profit.
It appears to mean that money was taken from overall profits to pay for the complete development cost of the product, normally an action determined by the product not being expected to raise the finance to do so in whatever time period was determined as reasonable.

From the figures given by Frontier earlier this year, profits form the business were used to amortise the development debt of EDO - which, in any parlance equates to a recognised loss.

The poor launch was a self-inflicted disaster by Frontier - it should have been held back until performance was closer to that advertised - which, if I was being unkind, would mean that EDO still wouldn't have been released yet.

ETA: It doesn't mean that I consider the expansion to be poor - I thoroughly enjoy the content and changes introduced - but I do appear to be in a minority on this forum.

If a commander is a VR user, like myself 100% VR.
After waiting for we’ll over a year closer to 2 and then getting Odyssey and finding that all the new stuff is not in VR and Odyssey has much worse game performance than Horizons would a huge disappointment.
So for VR users what’s the point in Odyssey, I would say none.

I believe that someone at Frontier sold the idea that the new game engine would be glorious and would perform well and management bought it.
I also believe that Frontier thought it could do all those things they said like work on consoles.
After almost 2 years of Odyssey development and release date push backs they got pressured by everyone to release and they did.

I think they made a mistake stopping VR support. VR was fantastic in ED added so much depth... Literally.

All they needed to do was add actual crew to your ships, sitting in the empty chairs, reacting when you give orders etc
Fantastic, stuff. Especially in CQC.

I am dissapointed they didn't bother working on VR as well, and also dissapointed with the performance and direction of the game. BUT that said..... it is inaccurate and unfair to say there is nothing in ED:O for VR users.... IF you have the rig to push it.
given a choice I will always play elite in Ody mode and I only play in VR

I personally can’t stand the flat screen when on foot in VR, Don’t care for the new planet tech.
After purchasing 2 copies of Odyssey for main and alt thinking that Odyssey was the future of Elite.

I have the understanding that Odyssey gives me nothing over Horizons for VR, I hope that that changes in the future.

The upcoming narrative coming to Odyssey most likely will be on foot stuff and again no interest to me using VR.

There is no way I will play Elite using a flat screen after using VR, so probably won’t even log in after next update.
