VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

Being honest with y'all, with the recent happenings, such as the yanking of VR, and the optimistic plans to fix the community from Arthur now seeming like a switch and bait to line us up for the Stephen Benedetti sucker punch of "Mind what we said about galnet on hold for a while as it was balls to the wall on what you now know as Odyssey, well that was a lie too, galnet and community goals coming back? Nah, we had you, coz - guess what, just like VR, that ain't fracking happening either". - granted that's a bit hyperbolic, he didn't say all that, Tim Smith has been the "face of VR announcements" all Stephen said was Galnet ain't in the future roadmap, but contextualise all the toings and froings od recent comms with frontier and that little soundbite is a fairly succinct synopsis.

I look at this game, and its future, and the forum of doomed by dev bombshell announcements, and I'm like why fracking bother?

I've got a couple of hours free, I could fly (or play another game) or start memorising spec sheets from the appendices of a tender I'm presenting next week, hand having had a look at the forums tonight to see what if anything was happening in elite, specifications of spherical bearings has never looked so attractive.

I am talking about the Phil Spencer that is head of Xbox. rolls eyes
To be fair, Phil Spencer from Location Location Location is probably better known to the average UK person. I doubt many non-gamers know who any of the heads of Sony/MS etc are

The 2020 / 2021 / New Era / Odessey update(s) will be very indicitive of support for the future.

Hi I have been out for some time. Has there been any mention at all from anyone from FD about VR in the last few weeks - possibly at lavecon? Thanks

Can I just gently point out that all that's changed between the wave of positivity over Arthur's comments and today is one off-the-cuff comment from Stephen on a livestream, where he seemingly thought he was confirming what we already knew?

I do think with respect there's a lot of over-reacting going on today.

Y'know dude - despite their abject failures and complete ineptitude - they used to make good games. Flying around's in VR's still fun, whilst it lasts. If you like doin' it - do.
Sure, the future will likely suck, based on the suck of now with the 'fixes' and 'new crap', and the suckness of apparent (yet easily inferrered) future policy and statements.
It's like watching a car crash in slow motion, complete with the driver's hands-off the wheel facepalming themselves and passenger at the same time.

Don't let their off-a-cliff quality trajectory stop you playing for now. The day will come soon enough when you won't be able to anyway, so until then - make hay.
I'm 100% certain they'll mess it up even worse eventually. Enjoy the bits you can, whilst you can!

I don't do streams. Are they saying that Galnet is forever dead now? Jesus, this firm - I swear they're doing their best to kill this game.

And no disrespect to Arthur, but I have seen many a CM arrive and promise great things either to exit quickly presumably because they didn't follow the company line (cough Dale cough) or fall in to line with the silence is golden corporate policy. I expect no differences there.

Core/Horizons will still support VR. It’s not going away.

There’s just no honey on the horizon in terms of new content for VR players. And lord knows, in terms of the expansion roadmap (Legs/Atmos), it’s been a long old while on that front :/

To be clear : I do not mean that they're taking VR out of their older product anytime soon. Tim was clear the first time he said it, everyone knows that and so your (and anyone else's) tired repetition is pretty much superfluous.

It doesn't matter really how many times this gets repeated. It's like threadbare ostriches who believe they're somehow bringing illumination to the misguided whilst their own heads are buried in the shifting sands. Whilst tedious and lacking comedy value, it's just so much squawking.

I do mean that Fdev are apparently just so poor at managing their "roadmap" and developing their product now that it's just a matter of time before it's so bad, it'll just fall over like a Norwegian Blue. They can't get VR to work, despite it having worked for years. I don't care why - that's called "failing".

They will continue to fail at this, because if they fail for a hugely-delayed update that's taken years to somehow crank out, it's delusional to assume they'll be able to do it later without any pressure to do so.

If some people are so deluded they think that, given the issues with ED now and over the last few years - that FailDev will produce an innovative and high quality FPS as part of the game, and somehow in future magically resurrect the VR-magic they'd somehow lost...I can only suggest they dig those heads a little deeper. Denial's probably good for screenshots once you've endured the grind to get down there.

It's going to suck. Once people get tired of it sucking, they'll get fed up of it, and eventually ED will end. Not with a bang, but a whimper.

Until then, fly whilst you can. :)

I've resisted the urge to say this all along.. So here goes:

People, you are making waves in the wrong places if you want to get FDev to change. It seems at this point, based on marketing and press releases, that FDev is more worried about it's share price now than it's products. You want to get FDev's attention? Tank the stock value - get the shareholders attention. This forum and other 'gaming' related places are not the places to be fighting this - you need to be talking about the 'incompetent management' in places investors will see, like Finance news sources. Simply telling Fdev you won't buy is less effective than actually costing them (DBOBE) money and reputation.

I don't do streams either, many a time I've asked would they consider releasing a TL-DR (synopsis to us pre-streaming curmudgeon) of their streams. But today my notification bell has been ringing off the hook with updates of lots of people grumbling in the "Galnet Changes" thread over in News and announcements. The abridged version is that Stephen Benedetti said something along the lines of Galnet and Community goals are not part of the roadmap, and the forum went nuts asking them What the Frack? That thread may be swamped with community management working heroically in damage control efforts, somewhere, but that isn't the case in this timespace continuum, its the usual bombshell and tumbleweed pisch that frontier is renowned for.

What was suggested about manipulating the share price by Kelster, that is genius...

Thanks
It's a shame. I just pre-ordered a reverb G2. It occurs to me 90% of my VR use in VR since middle of 2014 has been in ED. I probably should not be buying the headset.

I considered doing the same and came to the exact same conclusion and decided not to.

.. and that's a real bummer FD. :(

Man you could have just said 'DoooOOOoOoOOoooom'. Woulda been quicker.

My eyes are open fella. VR never coming is a real possibility. Odyssey being pants is a real possibility. But your level of certainty that Odyssey will definitely be crap, and the end of ED, based on such threadbare reasoning, is genuinely hysterical.

Have you considered taking up knitting or something?

Lol what? How do you propose doing that 😄

Just come support the proposal in my signature or something. Their ain’t many pragmatic options in town at the moment, but it’s better than throwing your pitchfork at imaginary bears...
