Vulture - not as good as everyone says it is? Or just me?

So I've been playing ED for about a week now, picked it up for 20 quid and been loving it, made a bit of money got a few ships explored a bit. Since the update the money has dried up and decided to become a bounty hunter or do some massacre missions for some money. Looked online to see what the "best" ship for this would be and saw vulture everywhere. So I bought a vulture, kitted it out and went on my merry way. Joined a high conflict zone with my massacre 8 ships, was doing okish, took a bit of time to kill them but I managed to get to 7 and then got absolutely destroyed by one viper I think it was. So am I awful at killing things or is the vulture that bad it gets killed by a ship 3 "levels" below it? Help me out as I got angry and sold my vulture. But got 300 mill to buy something else? What should I buy?

Buy another vulture, that thing is awesome :)

To be fair, conflict zones can be quite difficult for any ship, especially if you start getting attacked by several ships at once. I would suggest sticking to RESs and Nav beacons until you get really good in it.

You could always buy a Chieftain or FAS, but they will cost a lot more to outfit than a vulture.

You've only been playing for a week. Skill takes time to develop.

Had you done any engineering on your Vulture? (requires horizons)

And don't quote me on this but I think(?) conflict zone NPC ships have engineering? Someone more knowledgeable will correct or confirm for me soon.

No offence, but it's probably you.

What hull, defenses, weapons were you using? How were they engineered? What was the combat rank of the viper?

I've seen small ships take on corvettes and win... do not assume that bigger ships are always going to win.

Spend some hours the last couple days in a CZ using a Vulture, hes my favourite CZ ship. Its a really good ship, not necessary the best one for it but getting a better one will be a tad more expensive.

As to why it didn't quite work out for you hard to say, what was your outfitting? But of course how you fly will play a big part, maybe you just need to get used to him. Ships that are cheaper blowing up more expensive ships is always possible tough, the Vulture itself is proof of that since he was built to take down bigger ships.

As for other ships you could try that I guess depends on again how you prefer to fly. A FDL might be worth a shot, that one is pretty good at combat.

The vulture is a strong ship, but is kind of a relic. As medium ships have gotten better and better pitch, and big ships have gotten faster and faster, the concept of "little ship, big gun" doesn't really work as well as it used to. The biggest advantage of large guns (vs. several small ones) is higher APV, but that's totally moot when fighting shields (which have become enormous). Now days it's all about being tanky, fast, and having a large number of hardpoints for various special effects.

For its price it is phenomenal. Before engineers it was v good but you had to use a little planning to spec out as it's PP made you think about things. Post engineers that is out of the window. It's the Cassius Clay of ships. Handles like an eagle, shoots like a gunship.

A Vulture, of course :p

You said you kitted it out - how?
You said you bought the game for 20 quid - did that include Horizons, i.e. do you have access to the Engineers?

Without engineering, the Vulture suffers from a small power plant, and only can get to mediocre speeds. With a moderately overcharged powerplant and dirty drives, it's a beast. But yes, those Vipers, especially in CZs and at higher levels, can be interesting. Some of these NPC Vipers run SCBs, which means that you have to repeat the chasing game multiple times until they run out of SCBs. Which of course gives its buddies ample opportunity to spank you.

---

Frags = Fragmentation Cannon, As kinetic weapon, it uses very little power and packs quite a punch, but is only effective at short range. There's a powerplay variant, the pacifier. A little less damage, but also less spread, which means a higher effective range. You still should be below 500 m for medium ships, and basically point blank for small ships.

PAs = Plasma Accelarators. Thermal weapons, a lot of punch, but run rather hot and use a lot of power. Plus, they have slow "projectiles", so are possible to evade.

I never liked it that much. For its size i guess its a good fighter, but id much rather fly the medium sized combat ships like the FDL or Python.

Nah no engineering at all. Only just unlocked Todd or whatever his name is.

Lol probably, ERM I bought the best hull defense, I don't actually know the set up but I bought the most expensive of everything. I used beam lasers for shields and then multicannon for blasting the crap outta them :) I think the combat rank was elite. But they pretty much all were tbf.

Right, get to work on engineering it then. Trust me, the difference you get is huge. Last couple weeks I've done exactly that on my Cobra, the Kalashnikov. Absolutely phenomenal brig now.

Vanilla ships are only really decent for low level combat these days.

More of warning — But if you're struggling with killing a Viper with a Vulture, then no amount of credits and more expensive ships is going to make it easier. It will only make it more frustrating.

Also a conflict zone is not a place you should be hanging out in, if you're new to the game or combat in general. NPCs are tougher there, than in a Resource Extraction Site.
Take your time learning. Maybe look up some of the YouTube tutorials.
