Wake scanning

Taxi ships? I am unfamiliar with the term...
Many of us have ships we use mainly just to jump around getting from a to b, and they may or not be fitted out for specific roles. Such ships are our taxis to get around the bubble. Many use a ASPX or DBSX due to their long jump range. Fit a wake scanner to them and scan wakes as you jump around.

...or Long range which lets you start scanning from further away but reduces the angle so you have to be aimed better.
Long range is probably better if you want to go that route.

Okay, so if I wanted to upgrade to a LR scanner, what's the path forward? I started an internet search on the subject and it's not entirely clear to me. Bill Turner? It seems like a long slog of prerequisites including "Achieve Grade 3 access plus at least 1/3 progress towards Grade 4 with Selene Jean." <--- that sounds like it'll take a loooong time.

If it matters, I am friendly with the Alliance, I see faction stuff as a prereq for various engineers.

A hold over from ancient history back before ship and module transfers if you wanted to get another ship from where it was stored to where you were and did not want to take your current ship away you would buy a cheap ship, often a Hauler because if it’s jump range, and use it as a taxi to collect your other ship the taxi would be sold when you got there.

Now it is the term used for the ship you use to bounce around the bubble, usually something cheapish with good jump range but not set up for anything in particular. I used a Dolphin mainly but the Hauler is still a good option.

The one that would go seal clubbing or destroy an explorer laden with data.

Well, I guess it takes all kinds. But I'm going to leave my glasses on to feel more cool if not safe.

I'm taking my own new Hauler to Deciat soon for some engine work. And.. I might have to rename it to A CUTE BABY SEAL for that trip!!

Try this, go to the different tabs and click the blueprint you want. It is also very nice function to track your plans and missing components, if you make an account, but which is not necessary though.

Bill is in a system where you have to unlock a permit to get access.
Juri Ishmaak who is reached via Felicity Fraser is a less convoluted unlock but requires Federal Combat bonds obtained from Conflict Zones which can be very rough.

The engineering would make the scanner better but it isn’t absolutely necessary.

Farseer will recommend you to Juri Ishmaak, who can do grade 3 long range.

Actually the Selene Jean unlock is well worth doing anyway. First off, you only have to actually mine the 500t of ore (you don't have to sell it) - just sit in a ring (away from anyone else), mine everything and jettison (abandon) the stuff from your hold until you have passed the 500t mark. Then mine the 10 t of Painite (don't be tempted to hoard it when still going for the 500t) and go visit her.

For Why: You can add up to grade 5 heavy duty armour to any ship with lightweight armour (the default) and there is no drawback, no penalty, because the lightweight armour is 0t so even the max 30% increase is still 0.

Okay, I have decided I won't overcomplicate this by trying to get an engineered scanner. I need just one for the level 1 Farseer FSD improvement.

So I have a scanner and as per YT videos, located a famine system nearby.

First question: If I can scan ships anywhere, why is the famine system necessary? The ships come and go faster? Can I just get one in a more secure environment?

Once I got to the system, it is indeed in a famine state, but there are no distribution centers I can find under system navigation or contacts. How do I find them? I played around with my filter (including having no filter) and still could not locate.

There was pirate activity in the system which I tried to stay away from. At one point I was interdicted and it was over in literally one second. I never even had a chance to try to evade. I have no cargo racks so he left me alone but I was just surprised that I didn't even get a chance to evade him. The Escape Vector screen popped up and disappeared immediately. Never saw that before, what gives?

That was easier than I thought. Went back to Bondar and just camped for a few hours until I got a message that my Atypical Wake Echoes was full at 100 with many others.

...logged back in and the maximums are now tripled.

Weird and old bug. The initial limit for all mats is 100, but it will update to the right number at some point. It's not a big deal but this bug being well known and around for years just shows a lack of attention to detail, and it must be a 2 second job to fix too (unless their code is far more horrific than I imagine).

I just use stations, traffic control moans about hardpoints but I ignore them, I believe the recommendation is because they have a high traffic in NPC ships so more to scan quickly.

If you are throttled right back when an interdiction starts it effectively counts as a submission and you are straight back in normal space, happens to me a lot if I am in the FSS. If you weren’t at or near zero throttle then I would put it down to a glitch, if it happens again it could be some sort of bug, if it happens all the time but only to you then you might have upset some deity or other.

It's hard to believe that people go through all of the trouble for a famine system and the dangers around it. I mean, in under two hours and with an un-engineered wake scanner, I picked up180 scans.

But hang on a sec... you can be interdicted while FSS scanning? Never had it happen and I'd be irked if it did. I play in Solo Mode... does the game kinda baby you in Solo?

As for data and mats... if I buy a new ship do they automatically move to the new ship or do I have to do inventory management in some way?

Play in solo when mat gathering, you never know who is lurking. Scanning passing ships is done in normal and not super cruise. You have a "ship locker" where your Ody mats are stored. They follow to which ship or SRV you are in. Like ship mats, they are not lost on ship destruction.

Not had it happen often but it has happened to me several times, fortunately only one of those times was I carrying anything and FSSing for the destination, but I was in a faster and better armed ship than the NPC so that was alright.
The galaxy and its non player contents are the same in all modes, the modes are basically just a filter on the number of players you could meet. As there is no one around to help out you can argue that Solo is slightly harder.

This sort of data and materials follows you around permanently even getting sent to the rebuy screen won’t let you escape from it.
Exploration data on the other hand vanishes as soon as the ship blows up.

What dangers?

180 scans is nothing - the idea of going to a distro centre in a Famine system is to gather Datamined Wake Exceptions - I am sure you didn't get 180 DWE (which is 100 max) - you don't go to distros in famine systems for anything else. Distro centres are useful because there is a continual roulemont of four ships jumping in and out - traffic at stations and beacons can be less reliable.

Yes you can be interdicted while FSSing - no biggie is it, I mean you are not FSSing with a full hold of Platinum are you?

Your encoded, raw and manufactured materials travel with you personally. (Our commanders have some sort of TARDIS-like capacity which is not only in our flight suits but is magically shared in any other suit we care to don.)

Just get wide angle sensors on all your taxi ships.
Encoded mats will never be a problem again.
Taxi ships? I am unfamiliar with the term...

G5 wide angle sensors will cover basically the entire front arc half-sphere and they are useful because while traveling to your destination (in supercruise mostly, but also in normal space) you can use Next Target bind to cycle through the ships in your frontal arc and scan them while keeping the course to your destination

(for wakes, you do need a wake scanner fitted on your ship, but the rest of the encoded materials you get by plainly scanning ships with your sensors... many many ships)

The PvE game is the same in all modes (Solo, PG, Open). NPCs will interdict you in Solo just like in the other modes.

The thing missing from Solo and PG* are other players, who may or may not try to kill you.

* I say this for PG as generally when playing in a Private Group with other players you're not killing each other...but different groups have different play styles so 🤷‍♂️
