Want to know what ED is like in DK2?

I cannot see clearly until about 4 feet away without my cheaters. This sounds like it will not work unless I can wear my glasses at the same time or they have some diopter available to place over the screen.

I'm no expert but I would consider it like using a pair of binoculars.
I would hope some rift users with your condition will answer soon.
You can use the slightly smaller cupholders+lens supplied with your glasses, but that's very individual from what I have heard

I am far sighted (ie. I struggle with objects up close but see quite well at a distance) and normally wear glasses or contacts. I use the rift without any correction, and it works perfectly.
My vision problem is not minor (relatively strong correction), although I can function without correction since I am still relatively young (40.. :) ). I can drive or bike without correction if I have to even if it is tiring on the eyes. I also have astigmatism.

As mentioned earlier, the content in the Rift is basically presented at infinity regardless of the "virtual distance" in game.
So, since (as far sighted) you theoretically see well at infinity, the rift will negate your vision problem. I have no eye strain whatsoever using the Rift even for extended periods of time. It relaxes the eyes since they don't have to bend the lens at all and I do not miss my glasses at all.

Naturally the opposite applies for those that are nearsighted, they will have to use their glasses/contacts with the rift.

I need glasses for distance vision but am ok in the rift. I think it's a combination of looking at something a few cm away whilst simultaneously thinking its at infinity, my eyes just relax and see.

Kind of appropriate, I just posted this (on my FB page) a couple of hours ago:

So it's now been a little more than a month since I received my Rift DK2 and I am still blown away every time I put it on. The best experience by a mile is still with Elite: Dangerous. Playing this game in VR mode is a complete paradigm shift from playing on a PC monitor. While playing on a screen you will be awed by the amazing scenery, flying around planets and dogfighting with pirates and other assorted space scum, make no mistake, this game is beautiful!
But... when you put the Rift on... oh my soul.
Instead of looking at a exquisitely crafted cockpit and lush galaxies on your screen you are suddenly *inside* the cockpit, you see your thermos/canteen tucked inside a pouch on your right hand side near the floor, you feel the stars whizzing by in frameshift mode, you virtually feel the blue sun of Ursae Majoris baking your skin. The experience is transformative. The vastness of space is awe-inspiring. I feel like a true space pioneer, exploring uncharted territories in a ship that feels real, in space that looks better than anything I've ever seen.
I could never, ever, go back to playing this game in 2.5D.
OK, enough plugging Elite. The Rift DK2, even with it's manifold flaws, is just superb. The best purchase I have made in years.
Yes, it has flaws. The software isn't perfect, the drivers can be finicky, the extended mode and Direct to HMD modes don't always work perfectly but I don't care. It's great and if you can understand that this is still a prototype, still a development kit and NOT intended to be perfect or meant for the general public then you'll have a brilliant time inside the matrix.

I'm amazed how many people don't enjoy using the Rift - people will find something to complain about, no matter how good a product is. For me, I obviously love it... but hey, maybe I'm just easy to please? (I'm not!)

I am pretty surprised at some of the posts regarding the DK2 with ED.

So long as you're overcoming the processing and have smooth processing, you should be in love.

The text CAN be blurry. To fix this to some extent, make sure you are on 1920 x 1080, the default for me was not that. You can also lean in. The times I have trouble reading the screen is in the cockpit to the left and right. If I just lean in a little bit, the text is zoomed and I can read it just fine, but most of the time I can read it just fine. You also need to make sure your IPD is set correctly. Finally, you need to make sure the rift sits on your face correctly. There is only 1 center point, and you MUST have it aligned to it, otherwise you will get a lot of blur.

For a "development kit," I'd say it's already incredible. I do hope they fix the clarity, but I have only played a couple of times without the Rift. I find it boring, and am constantly reminded that I am playing a game.

The Rift really transports me. Hot and sweaty? That's interesting as well, I have not gotten hot and sweaty because of my rift at all. What are you guys wearing here? This isn't a helmet... It's literally like a pair of scuba goggles at most.

Yesterday I had the first flight in my new Lakon 6 with the rift and the panorama windows in the cockpit are amazing. I was just trading and listening to my music and did stop a few times to take a look. It was so much fun and relaxing.

I belive I'll pass on Oculus for now. A DK3 might be the holy grail, but DK2 is little bit too far still for spending that much money for it.

I think the sweatyness more to do with the heat being kicked out by the Graphics computation than the Rift headset itself. It's more comfortable than scuba goggles and is actually quite well vented, but when its in a small room with a monster PC that's working really hard to convert electrical power into heat and pixels...

This can be a good friend....

Sorry, but there will be no DK3. They're heading into full consumer release by the end of 2015.

That's even better than. I mean speding that much money for not perfect DK that cen be possibly obsolete very fast. I'm not geeky enough for that. Although I'm a huge fan of any VR.

I can't imagine playing ED without the rift...

The experience is uncomparable to anything else I have played, including 3d vision glasses...

No sir... I love it now, and will definitely get newer rift models when they come back... Only thing is can we make fonts a little bigger or more readable?

Thanks!

I must be one of the unlucky few.
E: D is totally AMAZING with the rift. Granted. No argument.
However I just feel the drop in resolution and the inablity to read text is killing my eyesight. FPS is also seemingly great with the rift active (when I move the joystick movement / fps is silky smooth). Again, "however", when I move my head the movement is a little jerky. Certianly not up to the quality of the Rift's demo table.......
Coupled with needing to drop to desktop quite frequently means I'm choosing to use the monitor over the Rift.

Luckily I'm testing the Rift for school, so can look forward to purchasing the full version when it's out !!!! :D

I have also just purchased a rift for school use. Would be interested to know what you will be using yours for. Would love some ideas (if I can get it to play anything other than the demo!)

I will also be trialling the rift with Elite of course.

Speaking as someone who used to have to sneak into school at dinner time to use a computer I think its great kids get to see this tech first hand. Many companies develop / engineer products in a totally 3d environment and are looking into this as we speak.
Its just looking for the right demo app have you looked in the OR forum?

That's the reason I purchased the rift to give students the opportunity to experience vr first hand. They are really excited about it. Have checked out some of the demo apps but the only one I can send direct to the rift is the demo that comes with the sdk and the config utility.

All other demos result in no image broadcast to the rift but moving the headset moves the screen image. Will be investigating tomorrow.

Have you tried both direct and extended mode?
Unfortunately this is so new you have to play a little with it, bit tight on time at the moment but if you would like me to try any demos my end?

Put the rift into extended mode, in windows settings set it to portrait.

Then, in the nvidia panel, set up the options in there. Most of the demos I play work like this. Using VorpX is a pain though to use.

Thanks for your help guys. I will give it a go tomorrow and let you know how it goes. Hope I get used to the motion sickness effect!
