*** WARNING *** Regarding 1.3

Thanks for the heads up. I've been out for about a month and will have around 2000 systems scanned on this trip by the time I get back, if I return quickly now. Was hoping to spread it around the Empire factions to improve rank, or perhaps unlock some more permit systems. I assume it wont go live until next Tuesday at the earliest, so I should have time.

I always stop at a border world and upgrade my powerplant and distributor to full a-spec (I already carry shields and beam lasers with me into the black). It'll sting a little bit when the 10% thing goes into effect, but not much. Then I high-tail it to my "home" system where a Vulture is parked < 200 ls away from the entry point. I do my selling via the Vulture. Only been interdicted once in my Asp coming back from my previous exploration trips.

Nice heads up OP.

Im probably one of the lucky 10% explorers that go out in a fully kitted & armed Asp, so i can turn it into a fight, if needed. Im still heading to the core & reckon on at least a 6 week trip back to my 'fringe of civvy' system, that i usually dump all my data onto (as i dont care about using my data for rep gain!).

I must remember though, to auto repair all my guns when nearing civvy space again (those silly moments when you lose concentration & fly head first into the side of a sun's ring).

By the time i return the 'new' 1.3 update will be last month's newspapers & the waters will have been fully tested, it'll be interesting to see how update 1.3.08 will look!

Great....Unless there are some severe bugs in 1.3 there is no way I will be back by the time it launches. Still 11Kylies away. However, the system I have chosen to download is right on the edge, so not worried about commanders, but will treat the NPC's with respect. Fortunately I have shields. I dont have chaff but I do have 48 days worth of pizza boxes, and Adnams Broadside bottles so that will confuse them when I discharge that lot. Not to mention the toilet.....

Really, thats only about 6-7 hours play if you race it, ~10-12 medium scanning and ~24 full scanning profile.

I thought there'd been no 1.3 announcement so far meaning it could be Monday or beyond before we see 1.3?

11k isn't that far... I'm about 21k out at the moment, and I could make it back by Sunday night if I put my foot down. I do have shields but the new regen mechanic will concern me until I upgrade it.

For those who need a safe harbor to return to, my home system is close to coreward edge of the bubble, above the plane. It's easy to reach without passing inhabited systems, high-tech (though smallish), and has a station and two outposts for those who forgot how to dock. :) Best of all, all three of them are within 20 light-seconds of the primary.

I can't vouch for everyone who stumbles through it in open, but the residents are nice as well.

Lol, you two are obviously not married, that and kids and Grand kids. I can only get 2 hours max a night. Plus I set myself a challenge of scanning 3301 systems, so thats what i will do, I may need to do more than 11K to hit the number.
NPC's lol....I aint frit.

It is a tad difficult for 90% of explorers to do option A when they are not armed.
And 90% of explorers do not care for option C when they have been out there for over 1 to 6 months of game time.
(90% is a guess and could be very wrong)

If this thread saves one running frightened child from losing their data,I have succeeded :)

In my statistical sample*, 100% of explorers do not care for option C when they have 4 months and almost 4000 systems at risk.

And I resent being compared to a "running frightened child". ;)

* sample size of 1, me.

For those on the way back. I am currently waiting for the powerplay release sat at Achenar waiting for a discounted Courier. As soon as that happens I will be on my way into the void, I will, however, hang around 1-2 days post-release if players want an escort and message me, I can always strap a ton of pulse lasers to my exploration Conda and do the last 100LY/200LY with you in a wing.

If the release goes live and I don't hear from anyone I will set off on my trip, good luck to any and all :)

It might be a bit early in the morning for my brain, but assuming I carry a 3D shield on my Exploration Asp, what type of enemy can :

1) Kill me before I can escape
2) I would destroy if I was packed for bear

At the moment anything that answers YES to 1), would answer NO to 2)
So I cant see the point in being well armed.

Youre right, frightened child is not as good as Whiterose's Adnams and pizzabox getaway.

Dom, you make a good point about turning to fight vs what can kill you anyway and thanks for trying out the heat test. Ill do a momentum test today as well to see if the emer-stop damage is something other than thermal.

I did refit a larger power distro and thruster for this trip which lost me <1Ly. 400+ sustainable at full boost should keep the assailants eating leftover pizza

I would imagine one of the nastier FDL or Clipper NPC's would give you a very bad day simply due to the mass locking they can do combined with their speed preventing your escape
Are you confident that you can knock one of these down before your 3D shield runs out? Or that you could run away from them anyway?

If so, #1 applies :)

Thats my point really. If you cant run away with a 3D Shield, you cant kill them in with a 5A Sheild and Pulse Lasers so there is no point in carrying all that kit.
Take a 6A Sheild, Sheild Boosters, Beams and Cannon etc etc, and you might be up for a fight with an NPC Clipper (I have no idea on FDL, never met one), but thats hardly an exploration vehicle.

If you are out exploring now in a defenseless ship (or a slow one that is bad for running) my suggestion is when you get back, sell your data before choosing a power. If you choose a power, then going forward, you may want to consider your entry/exit vector from civilized space, or travel in a ship capable of escape or defending itself.

I don't believe you can be mass-locked when choosing to FSD to another system, rather than just back into SC. It is possible, in my experience, that light shields can buy you a few valuable seconds... For whatever reason, you may triple boost, but hit a snag, or not quite have thrusters/Power distro at 100%, therefore not out-running as effectively as you expected. the quicker ships at that stage may get some shots away at you.
--
My only other point to raise about armaments is: they are not necessarily there for use, but for show. If someone scans you/interdicts you, they can see what you are carrying. If you are weaponised to any degree, that is a discouragement. Perhaps not a persuasive one in every case, but the interdictor knows for sure they can beat you if you have no weapons at all.

Each to their own though.

Do the NPCs also boost to catch up with you if you are trying to escape? Main reason I am exploring in a Clipper is that I can boost away from danger if interdicted.

So even if they do, it seems I should only have to fear Cobras, Vipers and armed Orcas, the only ships that can catch up with a boost-spamming Clipper...

Tough days ahead of us novice explorers....
I have a cobra and most times i am able to defend my self from npcs. Yesterday though i had to run away from a cobra because it started launching missiles. If they make them stronger and increase the number of encounters i think i'm going to have a tough time exploring.
