Was away for a year - did any non-RP reason to fly anything but Cutter get added?

I have a Cutter but never fly it.

Planning to get back at playing E:D, so that's a serious question.

Depends what you like to do in the game. There are people for whom making credits is the single one purpose of the game, and there are others who Engineer their ships to the get-no and complain about grind (also those who don't complain because they understood they making the grind themselves), there are the explorers who spend most time away from the bubble and lots of other people playing however they want.
I do whatever comes to my mind actually, sometimes I spend a week unlocking Engineers, then there's an incentive of what's to do by the player group I joined, then again I go to the Pleiades and get a dose of Thargoid stuff (and I don't even shoot them), or do some exploration and enjoy the feeling of being out in space, sometimes I just do screenshooting sessions and hunt for awesome views, which will be much easier once 3.0 drops.

For me there is a lot to do, but I think that's also depending on your viewpoint and what you want from the game. In any way, fly safe and welcome back, should you stay. o7

Huita! The Alliance Chieftain is about to come out. And, especially, after some adjustments in the Beta 3.0, it is fan-tas-tic.

So, fly the Cutter for the big stuff, then the Alliance Chieftain for something quick, moveable and still a hint of Cutter drift ;)

And, of course, both RP and non-RP reasons to fly it!

Well, i'll get the Chieftain and T-10 of course, but those are for RP reasons :) I still hope one day we will get truly Alliance ships but eh, if it's the closest thing we can get so be it.

Still waiting for the Alliance to release the multi-role Turner class ship.

For many things you might want to do in the game, the Cutter is too big, or too unmaneuverable, or both.

Exploration: Cutter is adequate, but AspX and Anaconda are better; the Dolphin is also proving a popular option. The low maneuverability of a Cutter will likely irritate you on a long voyage. Also, if you go out to Colonia, you won't be able to visit many of the star systems because they only have Outposts.

Combat: Cutter has weak shields and low maneuverability. Lots of people prefer pretty much any other non-trader ship to a Cutter: the Corvette for an unkillable personal battleship, the FdL, FAS, Vulture for heavy fighters, or the iCourier and iEagle for SPEED.

BGS: the Cutter is useless for mission-running, because it can't land at Outposts. BGS min-maxers use a Python.

I have a weird feeling that some people see combat entirely differently (compared to me, of course). For example - how can cutter be less unkillable than vette? I mean, cutter has insane boost speed and mass factor high enough that the only ship that can pursue a cutter and keep it from low-waking is another cutter. Another thing speed gives you is total initiative on the battlefield. Want to boom zoom the target with high burst damage? Here you go. Feeling the heat? Just hit one button and you're perfectly safe. Now, running around a target in circles in something smaller and/or slower might be good, but only as long as they decide to stick around. Did something change in the meta while i was away?

Slower, less agile, worse jump range, worse with fixed weapons, worse looks than my eagle.

Tried it, didn't like it.

Yes. Life. But seriously now, what about the passive agressive style? Did i hit a nerve or something? Try again properly?

Some play-styles deserve a touch of sarcasm & as we all know, sarcasm is a dish best served passive-aggressively.

And also, Arthur doesn't need to 'try again properly' - not to get my +1, anyway!

Jeez, I have over 5000 hours in the game. I don't think I've used any of my Cutters since at least 1000 hours ago, and only then to run some Powerplay cargo. I can make more money in a DBX than anyone can in a Cutter. I can have more fun in PvP in a Sidewinder than I can in a Cutter and I reckon that I've made more money with a Sidewinder than a Cutter by a factor of at least a five, since I've been playing the game.

Cutter is a great ship ... until you need to turn. Then it's about as fun as dental surgery.

I use my Cutter only for cargo runs. My Anaconda is much better for passenger missions. My Corvette is much better for combat.

My Cutter is collecting dust until another lucrative trade CG comes along and I can be bothered to participate. If 3.0 hits before that, I'll probably switch to a T-9 anyway. Only thing I'll miss will be unloading the 7 packhound racks onto unsuspecting interdictors.
