"We are listening to the community"...

To be fair, the community vehemently asked for fleet carriers (coming) and I*ve heard enough voices to ask for options to get livery items in game.

So I cautiously raise my hand.

Well they vehemently asked because they were shown them ("shown" - I'm trying not to use the word "promised" since it seems banned around here) nearly 2 years back.

It's not like: community asks for for a new feature, and then Frontier listens (like, I don't know, the Universal Limpet Controller?)

ARX are just a way to obfuscate what you are actually paying for something. It allows FDev to change the prices of items without most customers realizing what the change really amounts to. Some will calculate, but most will just purchase without question. It’s not real money, it’s “points”, so they have no mental value to a person.

I’m assuming that you won’t be able to purchase a precise number of ARX for your item, right? This is akin to the gift card system whereby you give frontier money upfront for a pool of points and they get to use the money as investment income until you redeem the point value through store purchases. Oh, and I’m sure it’s going to be financially incentivizing to purchase larger buckets of points over smaller ones. Another way for FDev to acquire piles of cash with no actual obligation to the customer at the time of purchase.
Assuming it's basically just a copy of the points system on console, then you really have no reason to worry. Admittedly, you do have to buy them in specific bundles at the moment (i.e. 500, 1000, 2500, etc) but the difference in value is so little you really don't need to worry about getting the biggest pack whenever you want something, just get however much you want and you never feel like you're being ripped off

Now we need a little RC car 'rover limpet controller' for srvs to help pick up mats

This.

It says a lot about video-game developers that we've all become utterly skeptical about the idea of games having in-game currencies tied to real-world money because it seems like every previous iteration of the idea has been a platform to implement bad things.
That IS something that dev's are responsible for, and it's a perception that FDev must have been aware of when they decided to introduce Arx.

Having made the decision, it's now up to FDev to prove to us that they will do things differently.

If they genuinely simply wish to create a system that incentivises players to do stuff, in-game, in order to earn things that cost real money then I guess there has to be some kind of in-game currency to do this.
If that's all Arx turns out to be, good luck to them.
And if it turns out to be more than that, I guess FDev will find out how players feel about that.

So awesome! ROFL! Linky-link?
Errm, the one I linked in my last post .... not seen any completely losing it yet, though we're starting to meme it in anticipation:

Hey Bob

We looked at your time in game, sadly we see that you haven't done enough actions for 50 bazillion Arx, but we're excited to credit your account with the 0.1 Arx that you are due.

Have a nice day!

There are honest ways to make money that don’t require you to confuse and exploit your customers. The store is completely fair as it stands now. You see real prices and you purchase only what you want. In the future (for example) you will have the option to purchase:

10,000 ARX for $5
20,000 ARX for $7
50,000 ARX $12
100,000 ARX for $22

What did you just buy? That day a paint job costs 3254 ARX. A month from now the same paint job costs 3289 ARX. Frontier just got a raise without most people knowing it. If paint packs have been $5, and they go for $7 all of the sudden, players notice that. These ARX changes will go unnoticed due to their amounts.

We have no subscription fees now, why would ARX be required to maintain this?

I get your point about separate storefront currencies obfuscating prices and bundles to be designed to leave you with useless rest amounts of points/gems/"arx".
We have seen this in enough games already, your worries are certainly not unfounded.
I also agree that whole "it's either that or subscriptions" argument is nonsense, but for some reason it always pops up when FD makes or even just hints at business model changes, so nevermind that.
The thing is, we don't have detailed info yet on how they intend to introduce that new currency.
We don't know the bundle sizes or if there's gonna be bundles at all, or if perhaps we can buy the exact amount of Arx we want.
We also don't know exactly how or how many Arx we will be able to accumulate through game play.
At this point we have to give them the benefit of the doubt, and it's not like any concerns we issue now are likely to change FD's mind about the implementation anyway.
I welcome the added opportunity to acquire these items through game play. I never spend money on cosmetics in games, but i will use customization in games that offer them without having to spend cash.
So basically, even if worse comes to worse, i'm not missing out on anything here.
And being able to just change skins on the fly from the main menu seems like a very good QoL improvement to me too.
