We have a dream

A limpet controller. No need for universal as that is granted now. Comes in 1,3,5 and 7 sizes which have room for 1,3,5 and 7 limpet protocols that come in 1,3,5 and 7 sizes. Now you can fill the limpet controller with the protocols you need. So now you buy a size 7 limpet controller and put in two size 3 collector protocols and a size 1 prospector protocol in and can use the other slots for hull reinforcements or something. Or stick with the two size 3 controllers and a size 1 controller because you can handle the slots better. At least now you have a choice how to mix and match your limpets.

Yes, there's many possible solutions. "Universal Limpet Controller" is just a shorthand for "something better/more rational than the mess we have now".

I don't know, there are many possible solutions. Something like fire groups?

There are some issues to iron out, sure but nothing so difficult as to justify the fact that we still have to juggle 8 kinds of limpets.
The reason I ask is that it may not be as easy as people think. If you go with firegroups then the UI would need changing to reflect different functions for a single module, something it's not capable of right now. Also, the UI would need to may it clear at a glance which function is selected in which firegroup. I suspect this is actually quite challenging.

A new cockpit "Mode": "limpet controller Mode". Not exactly elegant, but it would work.

How would you choose what kind of limpet to fire?
A controller has two fire groups to itself: Function select and launch. With the first option you can scroll through the limpet types and then launch the one you selected with the other fire group. Or make every single limpet type a fire group you can then pick and choose from, though that may clutter the fire group tab.

Problem with the first option is that you'd need to do a lot of scrolling to get to the type of limpet you want to fire, which could get tedious. Problem with the second option is that limpet controllers would have to be entirely separate from weapons firegroups, which may not be desirable.

I wish I could suggest a solution instead of just torpedoing ideas...

FDev"s amswer:

(copy/paste regular limpet controller) ok heres an advanced limpet controller. they're only available in size 4. you have to use a very expensive crafting formula to switch between limpet types and the advanced limpets that they control cannot be purchased. they must be synthesized. 2.8% of our plaerbase will really love these.

now get grinding!

Good question. It would probably be best if we could select astroids.
Hull Repair Limpets have a similar issue if you're repairing yourself - you have to launch them with no target selected. So that gives us at least three limpets that work in 'no target selected' mode, and for two of them it's optional.

Gah...this is tricky!

Edit: and decon limpets as well! That's four of the blessed things!
