We need to be able to track down our own Nemesis!

A thought on a possible feature. In theory the bounty board is great because it give us incentive to hunt down the big bads and tells us where they were last located.

What if we could do that with anyone?

What if we could allow ourselves to track down any CMDR in a similar fashion (last scene in X-system).

Obviously this could suck and be abused - especially by griefers and other types, so it would have to be voluntary. You put in a hunt request (like a friend request) and they decide if they want to accept it. If they do, you can get updates on their last location in a similar way as the bounty list. Obviously the problem with the Friend method is that you always see where they are all the time when online, no challenge there.

So who would use this? Well pirates looking for a challenge for one thing. They might know they're never going to make the top 5 but wouldn't mind having to outwit some bounty hunters.

Friends who want to play a cat-and-mouse game hunting each other. Heck, organized assassination games done in similar fashion.

What do you think? Got potential?

Oh yes! I've taken notes on who's robbed me when I was a trader and who's interdicted me just in case I see them again! It would be so much fun to instigate a whole cat and mouse theme into the game where you have to watch your back for mugging someone of 20t of cargo!

it's unrealistic

last known locations are all we have to go by because it's space and space is huge

Why is it unrealistic? Not sure if you read the proposal. Last Known Location is exactly what I'm talking about - I'm saying extend it beyond the Top 5 Bounties format to anyone who is willing to be "hunted" (ie accept the hunt request). it would maybe put a separate list on your GalNet list (so maybe you'd be limited to 5 "hunts" at any given time).

The key point here is that it's something a player has to opt-in to. Otherwise griefers will pick on and bully certain people endlessly. But for those looking for more ways to play in the galaxy, it could be pretty cool.

I don't think it would work well

The only people who would opt in are people with crazy outfitted ships that are more than confident they can take on anything, or even travel in a wing of 5 anacondas baiting people for easy money

I mean yes this is a game, but it's unrealistic in a way that you would go out to a police station and ask them to put you on the wanted list for civilian arrests...

What about my current nemesis - he's tagged far too many sights of interest on my current exploration trip!

I don't think that you're idea will help me with my nemesis :p

You're thinking a bit too "big game" where nobody knows each other. This would be a tool that could allow people to organize things within the game in a variety of ways. Straight up assassination is just one. As I mentioned, you might actively want to use it with a friend or online acquaintance. You might want to send that request to the guy who killed you so you can attempt payback at some later date. You might want to organize an event where X number of people attempt to hunt one another down (maybe a Tontine of sorts where the last one standing gets the prize ;) ). This isn't necessarily about how it will affect random pirate #X out there. It might affect that, sure, but it could be used in so many other interesting ways.

Agreed, even though I'd be a lot of people's nemesis. Now that I think about it, they'll be a way to change your mind afterwards right? :D

I would think so. It would work like a friend request, so you could always get removed from the list if you wanted (or if it turned out you got put on one you didn't want - ie the griefer situation)

At first i was like "Yeah, it was said a thousand times already, and yes, we need it".
But then...
>You put in a hunt request (like a friend request) and they decide if they want to accept it.

LOL

In the context of the game, FTL communications are quite limited.

You should have to be scanned, then the data would have to be propegated physically via courier for it to to be plausible. Even the current top five board and wing/friend tracking go too far, IMO.

You say they go too far, but they are part of the game and aren't going anywhere.

I'm afraid the title I chose was misleading. I'm not sure how best to sum up the mechanic I'm talking about, but I do think it could be useful for letting players and groups do more in the game.

Being able to hunt anyone you want (without their consent) is obviously going to lead to bad things (ie a guy who decided to hate you killing you at every opportunity until you are broke, leave Open, or rage quit), which is why it really has to be something agreed to. But there are plenty who would use such a feature, either because they're confident about their abilities or because they have community ideas to play with.

Oh, and it would be a one-way street. If pilot A puts in a hunt request to pilot B and B accepts, B does not get to see updates on A (unless B also sends a request and A accepts). That would add more options in terms of how people could play with the concept.

You could just do something like, say player x attacks y and gets wanted. Y can then say i want to add z credits to x's bounty, increments depending on severity of attack. So if they hit you once, 200 + an extra 1000 or so. But if they destroy you you can add say an extra mil

What is unrealistic is the fact the last known locations can not give you a date a time of a location. Considering we have a scanner to tell us a player bounty worth in other systems surly it is not unrealistic to see something pop up when a big bounty player has been scanned or has entered a station...

I've been successful locating my targets using only the station bulletin, and my scout vessel... i'm pretty sure you can do it too

I know this sounds stupid, but I have my prejudices and there are some NPC names that I would like to track down and destroy. I had one (1) count'em one BBS mission where the the target miriculously had the name of someone I truly despise. So I went after the _____ with everything I had, but he warped out with 10% health. I was at around 10% as well, but I was willing to die if it meant that toad-faced clown-squire would be dead too. However, it's an NPC. It will be back, sooner or later. To only way to really kill them is de-install.

I could see something like that working in NPC side of things. Could be events that occur where NPC makes lucky escapes, comes back stronger, wounds you but lets you live, and gets flagged as a Nemisis (ala another popular game released recently where this worked really well). You could get clues to track them down, missions that end up involving the NPC that eventually lead to an ultimate showdown!

I would love something like that (as a backer) for the NPC that I got to name :)
