We Need to be Better as a Community

Yeah the most vocal parts of this community are by and large terrible. But theres a lot of nice people, too. It's just that the more of a jerk someone is the louder they tend to be.

It's all perception though... Some of the most vocal members of the community are hilarious (and awesome), and have me in stitches whilst enjoing the morning coffee and catching up on the latest bantering.

Newbies just have the disadvantage of not recognising tongue in cheek humor at probably the 400th time the subject has come up (it may be the first for the OP), but in reality, we've seen it 400 times... and answered nicely and responsibly the first 350.

A few of my thoughts.

I signed up to the forum back in 2007 after lurking for a year almost at the very beginning of June 2006 when it was created. Back then there was under 10 of us posting here, it was fun and we had a nice time chatting and speculating on when "E4" might be released. When ED was announced a flood of new forum members joined and to help Frontier keep up I and a few others were asked to become Mods to help authorise new accounts, help new posters and try to keep it friendly and civil.

I can remember the few of us pulling 20 hour shifts just to keep up.

During the kickstarter and the development period leading up to the release which in a few days will be 5 years ago! The forums were fun, vibrant, exciting, welcoming and very friendly to everyone.

The main game has been out for as I mentioned almost 5 years now and we're in an development period which we all know isn't about releasing major new content and some people get frustrated which is understandable and can vent their feelings here on the forum, this is also understandable and if they post in a constructive manner without resulting to insults etc they're more than welcome to air thei views.

We (The Mods) are under strict instructions from Frontier to be fair and impartial to everyone who posts here irrespective on what game, playstyle, opinions etc etc they may have. Frontier have never censored constructive criticism against the company or the games they produce. We have regular contact with the Community Managment team where we discuss moderator actions, what is acceptable and what isn't, how we manage the forum and how we deal with situations as they arise. (Along with the ritulistic abuse I get of the lot of them every day.) We see a lot more of the forum than most and have to act as situations arise. We cannot do this with out the help of the wider community and rely on posters reporting content/posts that are against the rules, things to be aware of and hopefully help to make the forum a great place to visit.

However, as with all corners of the internet there are always those who would rather be disruptive, aggressive insulting and.. well you get the idea. The very best way to deal with these posters is to not engage and report them to us where we will look into it.

For the vast number of us we're here as we enjoy the games Frontier make and want to help to make them better. I've made some amazing friends just because of these forums and I still enjoy being here.

Let's all help to keep it a fun, happy, friendly, informative and above all nice place to be.

Right.. I'm off for a lie down.

Hands up little me!

Nicely written post SirTJ. I may have myself had the odd ban here and there (or if not ban, maybe slap on the wrist), but compared to other games... no names... EVE ONLINE!!!! the mods here do an excellent job. Other games mods are like pure propaganda doctors, not here though.. You can count on mods joining in and sharing virtual beer over the banter.

See told the OP that ED community is one of the best... Now I just need someone to pick a forum fight with me, so I can toast it at the next CON.

So TJ helped authorize so many users, so it is his fault.

How does one distinguish a WHITE knight vs YELLOW knight on black and white film?

It obviously depends on what filter is used with the b/w film, but usually yellow is more "grey" than white - it usually is about one stop over medium grey (if I remember correctly, been a while since I used b/w film).
Oh and it depends on the yellow. A rich warm yellow is darker than a light pastel yellow.

In early B/W Cinematography, 'White' clothes were actually yellow (something to do with early halides) although I'm not sure just how yellow that was - apparently it appeared as bright white...
