Wear and tear ..... now 3m in my asp ....

Hi,

I just came back from a 2 weeks exploration trip with my exploration anaconda, i explored around 1k systems and travelled numerous times to 100k+ ls bodies to scan and take pictures. I came back with 2% integrity left and here is the final bill. I have not repaired anything yet on this screen

I came back with 100% hull and use cheap modules so maybe it explains the relatively low cost

Anyone who says "I don't pay much wear and tear, it's a tiny ongoing cost" is obviously someone who never takes long trips to binary stars.

If you are in this situation, and you think wear and tear is "cheap" then please enter SC, set your throttle to maximum pointed out into the middle of nowhere, and leave yourself accelerating into space for 20-30 minutes. Then turn around and SC back to the dock you just came from (don't cheat and hyperspace out to another system, and back in again - or if you do plan to do this, set your outward journey to 40-45 minutes instead). Check your w&t bill, then come back in here and say, "yup, that seems fair and reasonable to me".

This is a fee levied mainly on explorers, who incidentally are one of the lowest earning "professions" in the game. It's really not reasonable at all.

Also, I think self destruct should only cover 90% of your ship cost rather than 95% or not be covered by insurance at all. Since it is the willful destruction of your own property and it seems strange that any insurance company would cover you in that situation.

And what happens in a scenario where someone attacks you, shoots out your thrusters, and leaves you floating? Or where you run out of fuel entirely?

There are plenty of scenarios where a player can be trapped into a scenario where self-destruct is forced. Not all of them are to evade W&T costs.

I think this highlights a general issue for me with the way that folks play the game. Big ships are fine and dandy when you have accumulated the wealth and skill to own them and there is a reason. If your objective is to get to them as fast as possible by whatever means and with the sole objective of riding around in a big swanky ship then it will end in tears.

I have had an asp for many weeks now and it does everything i need it to do with my current objectives. I can fit it for exploring or trading or rares and it costs me very little compared with my current wealth and earning ability. There will come a time when i will outgrow my ship and need to move onwards and upwards. When that time comes i will have the money to fit it properly and pay for its upkeep. That day may be quite a long way away

Not criticising the op in any way by the way, just my thoughts

I have a type 6 & a cobra both close to A rated. Maybe I will trade some rares soon, never done before or mine something or just move 100 LY from where I am and start building rep again who knows I don't right now.

When I get an Asp (I don't want to sell my cobra or type 6 so it will be a while) I will be even more careful, 200k CR made me wince the other night I guess an Asp is > 1 million to rebuy.

I could sell both my ships & get a basic Asp to go exploring or as a lightly armed trader but the thought of starting in a sidey again just shouts "don't do it" every time I consider it, I think I will have the Asp in a month or two and might even explore for a bit, I am in no rush I have paid for my DLC already and I fully expect to be playing long after the DLC is introduced which I guess the first will be this year.

I understand "That day may be quite a long way away" too as it is for me, I am in no rush, tomorrow I will most likely trade another million profit (not quickly) or I might buy an Eagle or sidey for a bit of fun (viper a bit too expensive right now), right now for me the Asp is the next step, I might just pause there until the damage / wear & tear costs get looked at again.

FWIW

I don't mind the integrity charge while doing normal trading.

I just went exploring in an Asp for 3-4 days. I have A rated components. My re-buy is 1.35MCr. I got interdicted once. When I got back my hull was 97% and most of the modules were 96-98%. The repair bill was 4500Cr. Ship integrity was 13% and they wanted 1.30MCr to repair. I made 2.75MCr on exploration (and Pathfinder).

So with all repairs, that's a total profit of 1.45MCr for I'm guessing about 20 hours of exploring. I was making that in 1/2 hour trading. The integrity costs about 65,000Cr/hr during exploration; I think I was paying about 5,000 after many hours of bounty hunting at R.E. sites, while making 2-3 times the credits.

Yeah, I think W&T is broken. I'm not whining about it, but I'll probably sell my modules, blow myself up, and claim my insurance. Then I'll park my Asp, buy a T9, and go trading.

I just got a Clipper(my 1st large ship) a few days ago and believe that the balance for earning large ships is well... not so well balanced.
We lose outposts.
We get taxed.
We get charged more for fuel.
We have higher repair bills.
Etc..

You all can add the rest if ya want but I'm not seeing much on the other side to balance it, maybe there should be a perk or two added?

I'm fairly new and didn't have any of the early monetary gains as some have. I could have done the luxuries deal but that kind of game play doesn't appeal to me.

To be fair, in terms of lore, the Asp has long since been out of production but "replacement parts" are available, and probably low in supply. This makes for expensive maintenance on both "normal" repairs and wear & tear repairs. Or is that the Cobra I'm thinking of?
Are... are you really justifying it?

Old subject but theres still an area that doesnt make common sense

I buy an 80 grand car
i thrash it for a week and now it has a 40 grand repair bill
however, the garage will give me 72 grand trade in for it against a new one

the question : Where does the 40 grand of damage come from ?

I repaired my Asp the other day from 2% hull integrity & no canopy (I was flying using my 25 min life support) & it cost around 350k to 400k in repairs. Pretty sure it's impossible to arrive at the figure you quoted!

My ship was about as knackered as it's possible to get! :D
