Welcome to the World of warcraft Forums.

What will really help is making a thread like this! Strange attitudes from both 'sides'.

Just let things slide, it really isn't worth the energy.

Where kids fight over insignificant conflict and game mechanics... Always complaining about something when half of the time they seem to do it the wrong way. Not talking about the trolls invasion and the the total lack of respect for each other. Elitist everywhere being above everyone else. Clearly after a while, the game grows in popularity and things mentioned above become a real problem.

I dont want to see a game i like become this.

What you want is to control other people's thoughts. You won't succeed, as your attempt is amateur and brings nothing new to the table. Look, it's simple, if the seller makes a great product, the buyer praises the seller. If the opposite is true, the buyer displays discontent. If it's a great game, relatively bug free and filled with interesting features, people focus on discussing strategy, tactics and generally have a good time chatting on line, sharing discoveries & other experiences. If the opposite is true, huge margin of people concentrate on bringing bugs and broken mechanics to seller's attention. Seller/community can be grateful to them for that, as they accomplish work, for free, which was, clearly, someone else's business. Or seller/community can call it moaning/whining/whatever and, thus, ignite the vicious circle. Some people are so frustrated with promised things missing and being invested so heavily with the game they simply start losing their patience. You can either be patient in respect to them or just brand them angry kidz/trolls/whatever, be on your way and feel good about yourself. Your choice.

In short, if you want the game to succeed, your OP is targeting the wrong group of people to begin with.

Welcome to every single online game with PVPs forums in the history of ever. Not sure why anyone would have expected this to be the exception.

It was an exception.

I named a few other gaming forums I'm active in, all PvP, earlier in the thread, that are also exceptions.

Stop making excuses for mediocrity.

Well, crap, I just realized my character is no longer eligible for elite championship prizes due to solo play... how uncool is that?

Well, on the flip side, you probably weren't in with a shot unless you have no job and hence an awful lot of free time....

I'd rather have the job.

I am posting here to troll.

Welcome to the World of Warcraft forums, where people make idiotic threads like this one.

Seriously, go do something else.

Quite true. Although on vacation right now. Maybe I should do something else besides charging my friendship drive...

EDIT:
Seriously, go do something else.

An *excellent* ninja post in between these :)

you may as well say welcome to every video game forum, I've never seen one that isn't like this infact I think there are more well mannered and reasonable people here than usual!

The maturity is still here, it has just become less vocal and more focused on playing the game. Half of the beta testers are probably beyond civilised space the rest are probably planning to leave.

This issue has one origin : age.
Think of it. A forum for grown-up, one for kids. Problem solved.
heh unfortunately true.

a consolation is that it's not as bad here as other multiplayer/co-op/mmo forums, because a large portion of the membership harks back to the '84 days.

The forum wasn't like this in beta. Not nearly as bad. +1 op
i wasn't here for the beta, but have been involved in similar projects. the focus is very different; there is usually a constructive air, an attitude of 'hey we're all helping build this thing' instead of 'waaah i got beaten by a (insert nemesis here) and i think it should be nerfed'

And how are you different from the guys on the WoW forums complaining about the state of the community on the forums?

As long as everyone is making constructive posts and things don't degenerate into mayhem the thread can stay open.

I've commented on this in the past.

Hi Everyone.

Just thought I'd make a quick post on how the forum is evolving as new backers of Elite Dangerous join us here for the release.

Please be patient to new forum members as they join and delve into the forum and the wonderful world of Elite, we all make mistakes and no-one like to be jumped on when this happens. The vast majority of the forum members are fantastic in helping new posters to join in and offer advice. There are couple of points I'd like to make:

  • If a new thread is created on a existing subject/in the wrong area etc. Take a little bit of time to direct them to the existing thread and by all means PM a mod and we will look into the thread, please dont make disparaging comments .

  • If someone creates a post that comes across in a negative manner. Don't respond in kind, instead show them there are better ways to make a point by responding in a positive and constructive manner. sarcastic replies discourages new forum members and will stifle debate and can easily descend into flamewars.

  • If a forum member is unsure of the forum rules or how to post on the forum etc. We have guides you can direct them to that can help them so they can join in and enjoy being part of the great community we are all helping to create.

The Frontier forum is a family orientated place, it may come as a shock to some but Elite is not the only series of games FD have created. ;) Some games are for the younger gamers i.e Kinectimal, who may be intrigued into what Elite is and will browse the main Elite Dangerous forum. We really want to encourage them to join in and become the next generation of Elite players to kick our collective bottoms with their faster reflexes and all that.

Always be mindful of this and post in a responsible manner.

We are all fans of the game and are all on a exciting journey together to help Frontier make the game the very best it can be. The forum is a place to express ideas and opinions have fun and revel in the madness creating a great game. Everyone has a right to be heard and as long as they contribute in the right way they should be allowed to have their voice heard.

Remember many of you were new forum members not so very long ago and the influx of new posters will continue for a while yet as the game progresses through the stages of testing until release and beyond... It can take a bit of time to get used to how Frontier likes the interaction of the forum to be conducted, so show them how to join in by leading by example.

Thanks everyone. :D

Short story.
When mine-craft was in early beta I was running servers and forums. Some got quite popular. To my surprise I was spending more and more time in the server log monitoring screen, just responding to calls to, basically, mediate disputes or fix something that somebody else had broken, or take sides in a conflict, yadda yadda.
Some people would stand out as being helpful and mature and others as being childish and petulant and selfish. I started to develop judgments and respect for some and dislike for others.
This went on for a few months, and I was getting more and more involved, and then it hit me.
The mature helpful ones I was developing respect for were, largely, adults, and the petulant selfish childish ones I was coming to dislike were... children.
Now, those children didn't deserve my dislike or disrespect, I was judging them in that way because in the anonymity media of the internet server logs and chat screens and forums, I was relating to everyone as equal in opportunity to be socially mature. That was not fair of me.
So, I turned off my judgement and just started to relate to them all as children, playing.
Then I liked some, respected others, but didn't end up thinking any of them were immature selfish petulant entitled brats.
Just like I can overhear children playing IRL, and just be entertained, so now I can visit these forums and just be entertained.

End of short story, FWIW...

In my experience the most 'polarized' game forums are those that:

a) have high player expectations attached to them - ED definitely qualifies here
b) Are broken or extensively bugged - ED has some issues but none of them any worse than games that have been out far longer
c) A game captures the imagination causing players to want it to be better for 'them' to play 'their way' - ED has this but then so do many games and the worst thing a dev can do is change the core of a game to suit the vocal minority

It is important to note that only a small percentage of players of a game actually use the forums, beyond looking for help or advice, most just quite happily play or leave with no drama.

I feel it is the devs responsibility to fix bugs, look at broken mechanics and listen to suggestions with the caveat that they look at the 'big wipe board' and ensure they stick to the aims, goals and objectives of the core design. Knee jerk nerfs, additions and tweaks can all too often end up breaking more than they fix

They could probably get away with becoming a bit more trigger happy with the thread locking, the EVE Online forums used to be so utterly bad, but they really clamped down on trolling and its not too bad now, down side is half the threads get locked, which is kind of funny to see.
