Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

After nearly a year out in the black, I am heading back to the bubble... I want to by a Krait MkII, seeing as how I have an iridescent paint job for one but don’t own one as yet!

I also want to get the Guardian FSD booster, and get Prof. Palin to do some engine upgrades for me...

Then... well, I think a bit of long-range mining, but then it is back out into the void for me.

I need to make sure they haven’t forgotten about me at Patterson Enterprise, and take the dust-sheets off the ships there, and also have a visit to Shinrata, since I can go there now :)

I could definitely do with one :) Is it relatively easy to do, and can it be done in a Cobra?

I thought it was relatively straightforward, and I'm no fan of the SRV.
I've done it in a DBX, Asp Scout and AspX.
My preference is DBX (easy parking), but I see no issues with a Cobra.

Absolutely 10000x this.

Yep should be fine. A bit remote from the 'core' systems...a DBX would be better for range and ease of parking as it's cramped. CMDR Exigeous made a great video on getting the FSD booster. Took my Conda out there and did one of the most precarious, hilarious parking jobs ever.

Cheers Dan :)

It looks like a lot of things to gather to get one, but that video is really concise and easy to follow. I’ll be having a crack at it when I get back and pick up “Daffodil”, my Cobra! I saw someone in the comments on the video had done it in a Cobra,so I’m going to give it a go, though I will give her a few extras... like some PD turrets and a 2 bay SRV hangar just in case :D

It wasn’t clear to me if you can buy more than one booster after having unlocked it, or whether you have to go through all that everytime you want one - I could get away with just one, but there will be another 2 ships that I would like to fit one to, ideally.

Nah, once you've unlocked it, it's always available to purchase.

In fact I usually leave a few in storage at Diaguandri and get them delivered if I need one.

Smashing! :)

Can you buy them for credits, or do you need special magical tokens and materials? ‘Cos credits is something I have a rude abundance of now [haha]

The problem with the cobra is that its utility slots are on the underside.

You really want to have a ship nearby with PDT on its top (preferably 2). The reason is that the missiles the AI fire at you do hurt so having a ship with PDT nearby means that the missiles get engaged and destroyed by the point defence. PDT underneath won't cut the mustard.

I use an Asp X with 2 PDT on the top, one at the front does most of the work.

Ah, I’d forgotten the utility slots were on the base of the Cobra... thanks for the tip! Looks like I’ll be taking “Hecla” then, though god knows the old girl would probably like a bit of a rest :D That does make sense overall anyway, she does have a 51 ly jump already, and has proved herself landing in precarious positions already (I have a bot of a thing about landing on mountain tops to enjoy the view :) )

Aah, nice one. Didn't know they were underneath on the Cobra.

When I unlocked the FSD booster I didn’t know I’d need PDT and spent most of my time battling the skimmers either upside down or in the air about to become upside down, I had the handbrake on but it didn’t make that much difference....maybe I need to get the socket set out and do some basic maintenance. When I went back for the power distributor and power plant I made sure my DBX had them fitted in the right positions and I don’t remember even taking a single missile hit. It’s so much easier.

You may find it easier to go around the site shooting out the various Guardian materials and scooping them up whilst you get to grips with the layout of the site before you trigger the timer, it will also allow you to take out the outlying skimmers before you go for the blueprint and get the rest of them starting on you. Plus you’ll have some left over if you ever go back for anything else.

A year in the Black will make the trip a complete doddle no matter what ship you go for, you might even think about getting a boost from the NS at Jackson’s Lighthouse near Hodur to get there a fraction quicker.

Great, thanks! A recce trip round the site before starting the timed segment seems like a very good idea, especially if I can shoot things to gather materials at the same time.

You’re right about the trip; I looked at the distance from Sirius to the Guardian sites, and thought “Yeah, about 35 minutes should do the trick, quicker if everything is already explored” :) I hadn’t realised there was a convenient NS either - looks like it will be even quicker if I route through Jackson’s Lighthouse then, thanks for the tip :)

Dug out my Krait II - which, it turns out, is my most expensive ship; bizarre - to do some mining. Now, I've watched a few video's and I've seen the beginners guide but... I still don't quite grasp it. I'm not sure if I'm over-analysing it - anyone else find mining a bit complicated? Or is it just me? I think the latter.

Oh, and I got a first discovery apparently:

Which I find really odd given how within the bubble this is. And, to prove my doubting Thomas attitude, that system has no tags for my CMDR on the one body in that system. :S

Core explody mining?
Ive done a bit. Still struggle to recognise the correct rocks.

The only bit I really understand is using mining lasers! :D I'm sooo old skool.

I think it's just down to perseverance on my part to be honest. I sometimes think it will all fall into my lap with no problem. Wishful thinking!
