Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

They are increasing the payouts

That's fine for me as I'm pretty sure it will be quite some while past 29th Nov before I can sell my Exobiology data anyway!

Especially with all the football delays, including the one going on right now. :geek:

Well, my first try at a exploration tour did not last too long...
At least I managed to snap a few pictures on the way*:

"This is your captain. On today's cruise, we will have some delightful views. Our flight attendants will be standing by with further information."

"This is a Star Moth in its natural habitat. Notice how it prefers to land on inclines."

"These colour combinations are stunning, aren't they?"

"Now, this ridge looks like a row of teeth. Waitaminute...😯"

"Yikes. Almost crashed into this... What is it? No, it can't be a black hole... I think we found an entrance portal to the real void..."

*: Except for that first one, that was taken some days before departure.

That depends on if it's retroactive, which I wouldn't think that it would be, so what you have in your computer banks is what you're going to get paid based on the old model.

Otherwise, they'd have to upgrade all the data from the past in its entirety. I don't think that's going to happen.

Will that not be at the point of turn-in though, rather than the point of scanning? I see no reason not to collect your bio data if you feel like it, just don't keep sitting on it if you plan to go off to some CZs. There is deep sadness associated with losing a bunch of codex claims because you died to a completely optional reason 😹

but I guess another commander had been there before me and returned before me

This happens quite a lot near the bubble. I find that you need to be a solid 3000+ lightyears out to hit unexplored territory, and that number is slowly increasing over time. Try to avoid beelining to points of interest like nebulae or Colonia because those routes have been done a lot. Helps to go up or down a bit in the galactic plane, too, a lot of players only work to a 2D map 😸

Though you do get the odd gem. Somewhere in the bubble is an inhabited system with an outer planet that I got the scanning tag on just a year ago, because nobody had ever noticed it before 😹

I do wish there was a map view for "this system has never been visited by a human"...

so what you have in your computer banks is what you're going to get paid based on the old model.

Do we know for a fact that we're carrying the information about payouts, vs just carrying "bio sign X, planet Y, system Z"?

Be a bit of a rookie mistake to have each player carrying extra data that you might want to be able to balance and tune later... like, imagine if weapons stats were baked in at purchase time, you might end up with a powerful laser from back in beta 😸

It's already determined when you scan it what the value range is. That's why I run Observatory, so I know about how much I'm going to get for things before I waste my time getting them.

I just got going this morning. Here's a shot for you:

It's not worth a trip to the surface for some low rate 5 figure biologicals.

You have a link for that? I'd like to check it out.

I'm pretty sure Observatory isn't using in-game data. It uses currently known prices.

If those change later, it may in fact apply to anything you have not sold yet. We'll have to see.

My guess as a programmer is that anything you have not sold will get the current price when you do sell it. But that's just my guess.

Here's the forum link.

There's the core program which is what you want first. Click on the "old reliable" link and use it.

Then there's this plugin page.

I run the biologic, evaluator and signal plugins. You get voice alerts on anything of value as you scan.

If that were true the values would always be the same.

My shot just now has that bacteria at 56,100. That is going to be all it is worth within a few thousand. The other day I had the same kind of bacteria shown at 475,000. When I turned it in it was exactly that.

Interesting. I've never noticed different prices for the same thing, so I must be wrong.

In any case, I wish they had increased the payout before I did all that exploring, because increased payouts means faster leveling of the rank. And I know that won't be retroactive! :p

That was my point: If the value when I turn it in is always very, very close to what the estimator said it would be, then whatever we already have in our databanks is already determined when we turn it in.

In order for us to get more for it, they would have to go back and update the entire old database, which would then update the prices of what we already have in our databanks. I don't see them doing that because if they did it would also change the value of everything we already scanned going all the way back to at least the beginning of the previous patch.

I don't see any way for it to work out.

Another observation parallel: Diablo III

People used to think that when they found a magic item and went to identify it that the RNG for what it was actually took place when they identified it.

That was wrong. The item is actually determined the second it dropped in game. This was later revealed with an app called TurboHud. Using packet sniffing, they could reveal what the item was the second it dropped.

That informed you whether or not it was even worth picking up.

This made a lot of people angry because they would hold on to unidentified items at the time waiting for a new patch to drop thinking that if they identified those items after the new patch dropped they would have a chance to get the new items that were released on that new patch.

They had been wasting their time all along.
