Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I always, always, always turn off the onboard sound in the BIOS when installing Windows, otherwise it will load one of it's crappy drivers and they are a nightmare to uninstall. If I get a prebuilt tower or laptop, I always delete all the partitions, reinstall Windows with fresh drivers and the software I want after creating new partitions.

But hey, that's just me.
I work on a similar basis. Though, the worst part on some prefabed comps is the crippled BIOS/UEFI...
I've always had sound cards. That's just my preference though.

There is a free piece of software called Equaliser APO which can remove everything that messes with the audio signal and give you one place to tweak it all. That is guaranteed to get all of the OEM bundled crap off the signal path even if you can't find a way to uninstall it; it simply routes around it.

If you then also install P.E.A.C.E. EQ you can tweak or not tweak as you like. On a game with proper sound design - and this is absolutely one of the best things about Elite - you probably won't need to tweak much and you are now guarantee that the vendor software isn't screwing anything up.

And yes, ED will produce a 5.1 mix as long as you've remembered to set the audio device up that way in Settings and the device actually supports it. It's time to toss the TOS!

This is true, but I know a guy who loves to modify BIOS's and unlock hidden features, one of the perks of living in the Silicon Valley.

I'm using a SoundBlaster AE-5 plus, it has decent sound. I remember years ago a motherboard with vacuum tubes with the onboard sound, kinda like how brand-new guitar amps still use tubes today.

Well I have diagnosed that it is the direct audio inputs on the Z906 that are the issue - the front channel (front left and right) is working fine but the other two direct inputs are dead. I don't know why this should happen, basically four pre-amps have died but two are still working. I am tempted to rip the thing apart and do some old-tyme diagnostics and repairs (it was my original profession) but I doubt I can be bottomed to do it since the optical inputs are working fine. (It seems I must have at some point changed the audio options on the Blu-Ray / DVD player app to override the default sound on the PC and use 6 channel exclusively - so that has been providing DTS via the optical output of the mobo.)

As far as I can tell none of the games on my PC output surround via the optical output - NMS, Planet things, not even MSFS - the Z906 decoder does not activate for any of them (it activates for the Blu-Ray player) so it must just be PCM from the games. The Sound section of control panel does let me test the optical output producing DTS Audio and Dolby Digital and those test out properly (and the decode light comes on on the Z906).

When I get hold of my mate's X4 later - I shall see if that can take the games' audio via USB and produce DTS on its optical output.

Hi :)

I've always had sound cards. That's just my preference though.

I used to buy them, All Creative Labs Soundblaster variety I think. The last one was a small separate card that came with an Asus Crossfire motherboard if I remember correctly, but that was years ago. All the motherboards (Rog Strix) I've used since then (except one Z intel MSi board) have got a pretty good sound chip on the board nowadays which is good enough quality for me. I like reasonably good sound, but I'm no way an audio expert.

Down on a planet in my srv at the moment, I noticed I needed to top up my materials etc. (niobium, tellurium and tin) when I clocked a planet in this system had all three on the planetary information tab / menu.
I'm then going to move the carrier someplace else when done here, I haven't decided yet....maybe sell some of my old class 5 engineered (6off) drives I no longer use, it grieves me a little though that all the materials I collected to build them will be wasted...it's a pity we can't at least trade the defunct engineered stuff (drives at least) as part payment for the newer sco drives or something! 😎

Jack :)

I'm not entirely sure about that. From what I could glean from the german website, they also switch between sources. But it was mentioned in vague terms, so I'd advise to take that with a grain of salt.
No way of telling from the current site, but i recall researching that all the way to YT & beyond a while back... iirc they said so on the product page as well back then^

Not going to the CG in Dann(sp?) to bounty hunt, one contribution is good for some paint and pre engineered KWS modules?

Congrats on being back in control.
Oooo, another one? I'll have to check that out.
Hmm. It's a thought.

But, y'know, I've never done one CG in the entire time I've played. I really ought to rectify that.

Dann you say? Right...
That's weird. I'm sure I recall you at least getting a few digs in on Cocijo.

Unless I'm solely thinking of Codger.

...
May I ask what motherboard you have, and perhaps it's relevant audio drivers as this might be relevant...
I...
In the Realtek audio it reflects that until I also go back into the software speaker app and change it to 7.1 again. :sneaky:....so....🤷‍♂️
The app lets you fine tune the sound levels from each set of 2 speakers (on 7.1) plus other sound related stuff including the cable connections etc. so it can be quite involved, but sometimes that can lead to it being a bit confusing too as to what's going on as well! :D
...

Forgot to answer you earlier - yeah the MOBO is a good quality (but bit old now) ASUS ROG Maximus HERO VIII - yes decent audio section and Realtek drivers.

I was burrowing into the rabbit-hole that is YouTube "sort windows DTS etc" and came across something about the APO Drivers. So I shall spend some time over the next few days reading up on that and the Equaliser APO and see if that will sort me out.

The thing that is bothering me is that as I mentioned earlier, windows sound properties allows me to successfully test DTS and Dolby-Digital over the TOS with no problem but the app will not offer me an alternative to stereo as the default.

Hopefully the above will fix this.

Otherwise it is shell out for a decent AV Rx and go down the HDMI route.

I am helping a group establishing some colonies which involves being ferried around on someone else’s Fleet Carrier, it feels strange not knowing where you are going to be when you log in the next day.

Today I was back in the bubble so I scived off called in an armed ship with good jump range, from the other side of the bubble and went to the Community Goal for a brief blast.
I got an Anaconda on its own with not too much trouble then tried an iCourier in a wing of three with a Cobra III and an Eagle unfortunately the bug has been fixed so they all counter attacked but I got the iCourier but had to give up on the other two as the damage was getting too severe.
I handed in at the CG station so will eventually receive the minimum reward, currently 75,000,000, as well as the Kill Warrant Scanners and paint jobs.
Then a quick 7 jumps back to where I could park the Mandalay get back on my iCutter and rejoin the fleet carrier for who knows where tomorrow.

Yep, they fixed it, I used to call those Mulligans or buybacks like when the bartender buys you one for tipping them well. It was nice taking out the wing mates without getting your paint scratched. As long as the wing leader was chasing a hapless miner, you were good-to-go.

Hi :)

On a completely different note...

I jumped into Asterope a little while back and did some scout bashing. I've now gone back "home" to my carrier but it managed to park itself some 84kls away from the main star. Er... not had that before. I didn't select any sub-system stars either. Ah well. The SCO soon made mincemeat of the distance.
That's where I went recently, I was checking up on a posters observations who said while they were in that area some of the Thargoid ships were contacting / messaging them similar to ordinary NP'Cs!.....it was all a bit sketchy, so I thought I'd investigate....Didn't experience that myself, just their usual number sequence showing up on my ships scanners....after about 30min I cleared off!...I was hoping the poster had stumbled on a new / as yet secret feature that had been introduced 'stealthily' by Frontier. (a different slant on player thargoid activity :sneaky:.)...seems not. :(

No problem :) I was just wondering if your MB came with any ASUS downloadable sound apps that you could set up your speakers with, similar to what I had. If so it might be an idea to mess around with those if they're available. NOT Armoury Crate though, as someone has already said, steer clear of that app as it buggers up a few settings and not directly with sound etc. so my advice is to not to download it!.

I'm going on holiday today and stopping at my Son and his wife's house for about a week, spending some time with my grand kid's, hopefully they'll think of some suitable names for the stations I've built ready for them...should be interesting! 🤪...So I might be playing the game, though generally it will be in a 'Advisory / teaching' capacity
We'll probably end up bashing pirates though and 'driving' the srv (they call it a 'buggy') as it's their favourite gameplay it seems for 6-8yr olds....I wonder how many ship re-buys I'll be subjected to.. 🤣
Servers seem to be back online now btw.

Jack.:)

I didn't realise there was a bug, but even small ships can strip your shields when you're giving them free hits in a gang fight.

An SLF helps at least.
