Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

So this weeks' CG is:

Can I hand in the data I already have or does only new data count? I've never done a CG before.

Hand in data you already have.
Encoded Mats trader at both hand in stations.

Yes I'm with you there. I'm not interested in a Carrier as currently done, but something smaller although still very large, maybe which could take just small ships or something, but which I could pilot myself, would very much appeal. In the meantime, I'll content myself with dreams of a large Alliance ship and maybe a Boa!!
A single Cmdr fleet carrier, one of each size of landing pad. About 5000t of cargo. Some of the other services but not all.
The jump range can stay the same.
A long range private Explorer that can bring back the best of the good stuff.
Must have srv storage for ground exploration in odyssey.

Sign up first.
  1. Hand in existing required data to the science and research contact.
  2. Use the encoded materials trader on the station to convert other data to the required sort. If no data available go to 4.
  3. Go back to 1.
  4. Go to Jameson’s crash site for more data.

I was watching this video from The Buur Pit. The camera work is excellent! Check it out.

Anyway, I got to thinking after watching it that I've never owned an Alliance ship, other than a Chieftain briefly during the beta. Sooo, I decided to buy a Challenger and have some fun with it. I swapped in a power plant and shield I had in storage, and a big overcharged Multicannon, and then fussed around engineering stuff. At the moment it's bristling with Pulse Lasers, which amuses me for some reason.

The ship flies pretty nicely. The cockpit is ok, fairly open. It looks like a dog taking a dump when it's landed. It has lots of lasers. I put in some hull and module reinforcements. Maybe they'll matter.

The Alliance ships have a certain military air to them, I think. I painted mine white. I think it looks more Star-Warsy. Is that a word?

Here's my build so far -- light combat and missions, I guess.

Will be interested to see how you get along with it. I have had a(n anti-Thargoid) Challenger for a while, but last week was passing through Alliance space so picked up my missing two.

Well, last night, I was sitting a Robigo, burned out on doing runs and looking around. I see a beautiful nebula just 1,300Lys away, could get there in no time flat in the 65+Ly DBX... and whatda you know... the nebula is Permit Locked with Unknown Permit Required. WT? Disappointed! :(

There are many permit-locked areas Horsehead is one of the more annoying ones. @Sapyx I think posted a blurb about these in this forum recently, including maps of the regions.

It's a bummer, when I noticed it last night, I was like, hell yeah! ON MY WAY, but nope! 😔 Looks cool though. Maybe one day...

Here is the post I was on about:

Must be one of the unlocked story elements for whose permit unlocks the conditions have not been yet been met and disclosed/identified and possibly containing raxxlaaaa. Would this be classed as a rumour?
Don't know, but I am still going to fly out there tonight and get as close as I can. Maybe, I'll run by something of interest. A Thargoid with the Golden Key 🔑 that unlocks not only Rax, but the secrets to all the Galaxy and Universe! Ah, but more than likely I'll just end up calling the Fuel Rats 🙄

The problem with these permit locked regions, besides their being locked, is that it is possible to find your way into a clear area in the middle of several locked regions only to be unable to find your way back out again.

No pencil no fool you. No paper no fool me.
edit: Would these be the children of Raxxlaaa??

Yes but historically explorers have tended to be averse to destroying their ships, at least until they have cashed in their data.

Screw it. I can't even get within 500Lys of this nebula. If not Permit Locked, then it's Plot Failed. Oh well, back to hauling illegal passengers! You're right, even if I get in, might have trouble getting out. Like a bad relationship!(n) Thanks FDEV, for this cool looking place to explore, that we can't explore! (n)(n)(n)
