Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I was about to head back home to sell off my wares when I came across what Elite Observatory called a "small object". Naturally, I had to see this:

Not much to look at to be fair but it's the first one I'd seen... it was landable, so I did but, again, not exactly spectacular so I've kept it my photo album where it won't bore the pants off of other folks.

Also...

I know this is A Thing but I'm not sure what - a nebula? I see it all the time but I've never thought to ask until now. I'm assuming it's a star group one can visit and it's not Raxxla.

EDIT

You know... it's funny what you come across while waiting for your carrier to jump and you decide to surf the web... er YT.. er... Galnet.

Usually it turns out to be NGC 7822. (🍻)*
Might be some other group of bright stars too. :)

Reminded me of these two.

Well, this nebula has stuff I've not encountered before. Just got a codex entry for an "O" type star - can't believe I've not seen one before.

Below is a picture of the nebula itself. What you can't see is the black hole I'm flying away from.

Wasn't much to look at to be honest, but I got too close and got shunted out of SC. When I kicked the friendship drive back on, space warped around me a bit which was a strange effect.

Found a planet with seven bio's so I landed and took some photo's:

I'm now parked near a metallic ring with a plat hot spot which I shall exploit with impunity and wild abandon.

One day... I'll circumnavigate the galaxy with no AFMUs but its not as easy as it was and perhaps you could give me some advice on the best ship/ load out...
Well, if you don't do Neutron boosts and don't fall asleep very often when hyperjumping or when closing in to use DSS, you'll do fine without AFMU.
As for ship, I'd advocate for a ship you like to fly and has good enough (for your comfort) supercruise handling. Any ship and/or loadout advice I might be able to offer assumes gank-free environment - if you're willing to risk (potentially hostile) encounters with other players, especially when returning to cash in the data, there are experienced people around who can tutor building a 'gank-proof' explorer and how to fly one in possible gank situation.

So, assuming solo or PvE private group:

Next things to consider are how near the extreme fringes you want your circumnavigation to go, and how much of a detour you're willing to make to cross the gaps between galactic arms. Do you need an extreme jumper (Anaconda, DBX, Krait Phantom) or not, and what else you value in yor ship when out there.
Then there's the level of engineering you're willing / able to do, ties in with the previous points. Luckily in many cases a Tech Broker can help you with the best possible FSD.
Everything else boils down to what you like/want to do during you travels, personal preferences.

Personally I prefer:
-reasonably long legs
-some protection to save you from your own mistakes /lapses of concentration, maybe even low-medium level NPCs or really inept human gankers
-SRV to replenish used jumponium materials
-good cockpit visibility, supercruise handling & fuel scoop
-enough power to have all I need powered in usual situations, and to be able to hyperjump away with a destroyed power plant

To achieve these, I use lightweight modules and quite extensive engineering (been playing a long time, so have unlocked many engineers without feeling that I'd been grinding).

General guidelines on modules (according to my preferences):
-otherwise D-rated (where applicable), but powerplant, fuel scoop and FSD A-rated
-FSD of course biggest that fits
-powerplant one size (or two sizes) smaller, depending on power needed and engineering, especially thrusters & FSD booster can be power hogs
-small(ish) shield, I use 3A in AspX
-2G planetary vehicle hangar + SRV
-biggest best fuel scoop the ship can take (and you can afford)
-heat sink launcher
-point defence / chaff optional
-DSS mandatory
-big, but D-rated thrusters to have some normal space speed
-Guardian FSD booster
-smallest (weight-wise) power distributor that enables boost, even modest engineering really makes a difference here
-small mining laser in case you lose your SRV and run low with jumponium materials (https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/end-of-the-road.308075/)

Examples of Engineering, likewise the way I like to use it:
-G5 heavy duty Lightweight Alloy with deep plating (some extra protection, no weight penalty)
-double-engineered CG FSD from Tech Broker or if not available, A-rated G5 extended range with Mass Manager (or Deep Charge for Adder & smaller ships)
-Enhanced low power shields (Hi-cap for extra protection, Stripped Down for jump range, Lo-draw to save power)
-double-engineered CG DSS from Tech Broker
-G5 lightweight life support, sensors, heatsink launcher etc.
-G1 overcharged A-rated powerplant with thermal spread (more juice, so downsized is enough and still better with heat to keep cooler while scooping)
-G3 engine focused D-rated power distributor (enabling boost with minimal mass)
-G5 dirty drive D-rated thrusters, stripped down (some speed while keeping mass in check)
-G5 lightweight C1 rail gun with plasma slug to fine tune fuel when needed

Here are a couple of builds using aforementioned principles. These have AFMUs "just in case" or as placeholders for better ideas in the future. :)
All other engineering G5, but power plant and power distributor only minimal, and DSS is the CG one - examples of AspX & Krait Phantom with CG FSD too, as I have one and could put right optimised mass there:
