Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I said a little while back that I've never had scavs land after a settlement was powered up. Yeah... correct, they did and took my Scorpy out. Didn't even hear the tell-tale rattling of their dropship coming in! Bah :D
I tried a power-up mission this morning and when I got there, the usual scavs were around which I easily dispatched from the SRV. And I wasn't I wasn't given a power regulator but I've got plenty in stock so no problem there.

What WAS a problem though was that the settlement was one of those AGRI ones where the PWR building can only be found by going through a maze of doorways via the AGRI buildings - not easy when not only do you have to figure out the correct route through the maze, including going up and down stairs etc, but you have to breach every door to get there with the whatsit tool, which uses a lot of energy and you have to keep finding energy cells to replenish it.

Anyway I couldn't find the correct route so didn't get there and before I knew it, more scavs arrived and they destroyed my SRV, then "critically injured" me in an on-foot firefight and I failed the mission.

In my limited experience of these types of missions though, I've found that once the power is on, no more scavs will spawn (but I could be wrong - it just hasn't happened to me yet.)

Isn’t it sometimes the “legit” settlement faction returning actually? Still, they tend to be a bit unamused at how much titanium/carbon fibre plating etc. one may have “collected” at their place while on the job… switch the alarm off once the power is back on if you have kleptomaniac tendencies like me :sneaky:
I may be wrong but I think it's just more scavs. When I've successfully powered up the settlement though, I've been intentionally leaving the settlement alarms ON, so that if they do return while I'm looting the place maybe I'll get a warning. :p

I recall this happening in the early days of Odyssey settlements - i’d powered the place up, then heard that my SRV had been destroyed… i took out a few of the vehicle disrespecting vermin, only to discover that they had no bounties (but i did, with notoriety even) - they were apparently legitimate troops, sent to reclaim the settlement once the power was back on - hasn’t happened in a while though… but yep, it’s mostly just more scavs…

*oh, i mentioned cutting the alarms, as one inevitably sets them off while scraping more important data mats or sample units, which tend to have localised alarms (more just on specific, important data, eg: chemical patents) that set off the main system - i thought that when that was triggered, the non-scav commando’s would destroy your SRV or try to kill you on sight… scavs will try that too anyway ofc ;p

**ultimately, it’s all a strong argument in favour of taking a taxi to work… :D

Plans have changed, as weather interfered...

That said, does someone know a capable (preferably free) data recovery tool?
In this mess I had with trying to get ED installed again, I accidentially managed to completely delete the content of my "pictures" library...
😢😿
PhotoRec https://www.heise.de/download/product/photorec-45742 and Recuva https://www.heise.de/download/product/recuva-43395 usually get good reviews. Please take the hint on the Recuva page about adware seriously - Heise wouldn't mention it if it wasn't a serious issue.
Be prepared for a lot of footwork, though.

Edit: the link for https://www.heise.de/download/specials/Software-zur-Datenrettung-6008456 on the PhotoRec page might also be useful. Good Luck!

Ouch that sounds hectic - i wish i could recommend recovery SW but am still a bit of a Windows newb, as it’s my everyday gaming/VR/UE but not home platform - i copy everything essential (mostly media, screenshots & recs) over from there to my edit/work machine daily… where it’s time machined for extra safety even.

Many, many thanks.

Recuva was the way for me. Found all my lost data and then some.
Said some would be irretrievable, but it looks like all the pics are where they belong...
Seems like Recuva is ad-free, as I haven't seen any, besides some self-advertising from the developer after I had it installed.

Does this work?

Anything in recycle bin?

Nope, recycle bin was empty. Before I deleted the files as well as after. No clue what actually happened there.
But with the help of a recovery tool, I was able to retrieve the missing files. (Thanks again, @Ashnak )
Nonetheless, I appreciate your help.

Yeah... If I had some time to focus on it, I could write an entertaining story about this... Too bad I don't have any screenshots of it...
;)
Considering you don't know what happened, now would be a good time to run a check on your drive. I believe you stated it was a SSD in another thread. If so, they do have a limited lifespan (especially when they are kept close to full).

Well, it turned out that it is quite easy to turn the Library system of Windows into a hot mess when trying to move those to a different drive. Partially, because the windows file system tends to mess up its own naming. It kept turning the "Pictures" library folder into a second "Documents" folder on the target drive. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️
I just spent at least half an hour to clean this up, fingers crossed that it now stays this way.

Okay, at about 4:30 AM local time, I started my second attempt to install live. As I have found ways to make room on it, this time, the installation will take place on the main drive*. So far, this installation seems to be a little quicker than the other attempt, albeit not by much. It is now 7 o'clock local time and we have about 27% loaded. Wait, make that 28. But there's still about 7-8 hours to go, if the download rate doesn't deviate too much from the current 7-11 Mbit per second. Gosh, I initially typed Gbit... talk about wishful thinking...

*: I managed to make enough room to have 18 GB space left after the install, barely not enough to install Legacy...
Guess I really have to find a way to get Live running on this laptop, somehow...
Some people claim that they got it running on a 2 GB VRAM GPU, but I don't know about their immunity to eye cancer...

You might want to move you're swap file to a different drive, that will free up space on you're C: drive.
