Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Hold on. I think I'm miscalculating. What is your carrier balance? If you don't mind me asking...
No I don’t mind.
Mine is just south of 1bn.
Mine is a trifle north of that but then I haven’t spent much on suits and guns.

Recently, I have mostly been working on my engineering - it's a joy these days!

I have a modest fleet of ten ships now, which is all I need (except, perhaps, a Type 9 to act as a carrier tender). My original seven ships are fully engineered. For my three latest additions, which are all A-rated but unengineered, I have to build up my material reserves again. Over the weekend I'll be heading out to HIP 36601, before swinging by Jameson's Cobra on the way back to the bubble. I'll then do some HGE hunting before hunkering down in my carrier to do the base engineering.

If you haven't yet flown a Type 8, you're in for a treat. It's great!

I've also nearly completed my initial round of suit and personal weapon engineering:

Dominator
Night vision
Extra ammo capacity
Improved jump assist
Increased sprint capacity

Karma L-6 X2
Scope (will be fixed soon, hopefully!)
Magazine size
Reload speed
Stowed reloading

Manticore Tormentor
Magazine size
Faster handling
Audio suppressor
Noise suppressor

Maverick
Night vision
Improved jump assist (you can fly on worlds with < 0.07G)
Reduced tool battery usage
<Empty - going for quieter footsteps>

Manticore Executioner
Audio masking
Scope
Magazine size
Faster handling

Manticore Tormentor
As above

I hit Elite II in ground combat last night. I only rolled this account in June.

The non-lethal heist missions are hilarious now - you just rock up, trigger a hostile response so the level 3 security comes out the buildings. Tank the gunfire while you clone their profile, then run into the building, grab the mission target and run back to your ship. It's like the outro to Benny Hill.

Hmm - where do you find those stats?

Nice gear and gratz on E2!

EDIT: How do you reckon the T8 would hold up as an exploration and exo ship?

It has a largish landing foot print and until fixed is difficult too get an SRV in and out of on anything much rougher than a car park. Other than that it shouldn't be too bad.
But the new Exploration focussed ship, the Mandalay, comes to an Arx store near you in 19 days and it sounds very good.

Aha! Thank you!

Make sure you use a small or medium ship (Medium recommended) otherwise you can't use those small remote orbital platforms to repair/rearm which are near extraction sites.
I think I'll start even smaller to get aquainted with the whole deal. Because first, I have to get my flying skills someplace that allows me to successfully tackle such missions. It is one thing to land a ship on a remote planet without having the landing struts poke out of the top, but a completely different animal to take on a horde of angry birds with lasers and stuff. And survive. Mind you, due to a lack of materials, the ship I will use for this will be not have much equipment that has seen an engineer shop.
The ships I intend to test for this are the Hound Of Baskerville, the Mirage, the Star Moray, a still unnamed Mamba (probably) and a yet to be christened Python Mk.2.

I know you use a similar controller to mine which I now prefer. When you go to an extraction site you won't be attacked unless there's something in your hold they want, I carry no cargo and don't pick any up from destroyed ships so I can pick fights with whomever I want.

Quick tip, if you encounter a wing of three the wing leader will scan you, watch the comms, when they say something like "Ba, nothing here", they'll turn and leave. Follow them and you can pick off his two wing mates without being attacked. I call them Mulligans or buybacks, like when the bartender buys you a drink for tipping them. :D

I've also nearly completed my initial round of suit and personal weapon engineering:
FWIW, combat movement speed is great for combat..

I also dearly love this intimidator engineering for mission running if the guns come out.

Nice builds.

I have combat movement speed on an alternative Dominator - it is very useful.

The build I run at the moment is based around the L-6es though, so I spend most of my time in the air.

I'm going to put together something much more focused on up-close-and-personal combat in my next build.

No idea, my copy is presumably hopelessly out of date as I haven’t run or updated it since I got back to the bubble.
It seems Elite Observatory has an update available - which I am assessing now.

First off, it isn't crashing, which is nice.

Secondly, there only appear to be two "themes" - dark and light - but it does look as though more could be available (somewhere). I need to look into it.

It does look quite different though. Does the same job however.

There is a theme made by a user somewhere, don't know if it's available to others though.

Now, this was curious.

This session, I had done some courier missions and a black box recovery mission. It lead me to a degraded emissions source with threat level 2, which was okay, as I had taken the Hound of Baskerville for a stroll. But when I entered the location, things got weird. For some reason, I was unable to shoot the pirates of whatever they were that lured there, although they attacked me. I jumped away, instantly stopped and checked my keybinds - everything okay. I turned around, locked on to the target destination and found myself 4k ls away form it. I flew back, once I was in drop range, I noticed that the "Press Y to drop" didn't appear, despite bein in correct range and speed. I dropped out of supercruise and found myself somewhere in the nowhere. But the Nowhere Man wasn't there. I tried to jump out again, the FSD would load, but never jump. I was able to fly around, abort the jump, activate it again, but no jump. Then I tried to open the menu to quite the game, which didn't happen, either. I had to terminate the game via task manager.
I have checked my controller, in case it should have started to malfunction. But everything is fine on that front.

This was almost like a step-by-step crash...

I am just getting started with odyssey engineering, i just unlocked the first two engineers.
Now i am doing mostly power reactivation missions, and some other stuff to gather engineering materials.
There is still a lot to gather.

Unlocking the engineers you want is so easy now. Focus on the mats for introductions and unlocking the engineers who do the mods you want. For instance, for Domino Green you can find push in Odyssey PoIs. You can force them to spawn by taking the "seize the <widget> from a hidden cache" missions. You might have to shoot some folk. You can also run them over with your ship, which is really funny (but do mind your shields).

I'd say the path now is:
  1. Decide what mods you want on your guns.
  2. Grab the unlock materials for all the necessary engineers. There are two sets:
    • Introduction requirements such as give 5x Push to Domino Green to introduce you to Kit Fowler.
    • Unlock requirements, such as sell 5 x opinion polls to bartenders to unlock Kit Fowler.
      • The best way to get opinion polls is missions.
  3. Start unlocking and mod your weapons as you go.
Missions are now a very good - arguably the best - way to find the materials you need for both engineer unlocks and modifications. Keep an eye out for weapons you can buy from Pioneer with mods already equipped. Same for suits.

Your post reads a little confusing, I think.
Push is to convince Domino to reveal information about another engineer.
Domino herself can be unlocked by travelling via APEX shuttle for 100 light years..

A place worth looking at to find the pre-upgraded gear you want*:

*: Up to grade 3, the rest you'll have to do yourself.
