Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

How long does it take to go 20k lys? My Palin run nearly broke me at 110 jumps so lord knows how you commanders stay out in the black for so long...

There are many factors. Let's say you had a 50ly jump range - that would be around 400 jumps. Each jump should take just under a minute. So, ~400 minutes is around 6.5hrs.

Obviously you can get a better jump range with the right ship and some engineering. You can also use neutron boosts and/or FSD injection to push things even further. If you tick the "Use jet cone boost" option under route plotting then the route plotter will route you past white dwarf and neutron stars that happen to lie roughly along your route in order to take advantage of these. Alternatively you can use the excellent "Spansh" site to find routes that will go out of their way to find neutron stars for you and this can give you enormous increases in travel speed. Be warned tho - using neutron boosting damges the FSD over time so you'll need to stop and repair your FSD with an AFMU occasionally (basically whenever it gets down to 80% integrity if you want to avoid FSD malfunctions). If you reall push things and use every advantage you have you can get from Sol to Sagittarius A* (nearly 26,000ly) in under 2hrs!

It depends on what you do, too. If you just jump in, scoop, and jump out, then the answer is "not too long".

If like me, you stop to look at each system, get distracted by the things you find on the system map and cruise out to them, take pictures, submit things to EGO and build system hierarchies, etc, then the answer is "a very long time". :) I compounded this for a while by travelling in "economical" mode, which meant that I spent several weeks going from the bubble to the Heart nebula, for example.

This particular avenue of pleasure is likely to come to an end for me with Q4 due to the removal of the system map population via the ADS, so my commander is likely to finish his survey and then mothball himself in the black where he is happiest.

Um, sorry, not sure what this means. Do you mean that using the ADS will no longer give system data? Ick. I need to find somewhere showing upcoming changes!

A simple honk of the discovery scanner will no longer reveal a full system map. Instead, Frontier have delivered the missing "exploration gameplay" that everyone has been shouting about for years and turned the ADS into a proper discovery system where you have to use an augmented display to analyse signals detected in the local system and resolve them in order to work out the existence and location of the various planetary bodies and have them added to the system map.

There's a maximum distance you can plot in one go. It used to be 1,000Ly, I think it's something around 5,000Ly now (open to corrections!).

I do it this way:

- (Ensure I have Galaxy Map controls set for pan, forwards, backwards, up, down, zoom in & out. )
- Rotate the Map so that my current location is in the foreground, and Colonia is visible in the distant background.
- Move camera forwards, towards Colonia, selecting systems every now and then to see how far they are from your current location.
- If moving too slowly, zoom out a bit, the camera travels quicker when zoomed out.
- Keep an eye on the "y" coordinate (the middle coordinate on the grid markers) to make sure you stay close-ish to zero. If you start going up high or down low, the stars start to thin out, plus your journey gets longer.
- When I get close to the limit (5,000Ly or whatever), and hit the Plot Route button (NOT the select system button)
- Bookmark the system (in case the game crashes or you finish the session without reaching that point)
- Rinse & repeat

That's an incredibly helpful idiot's guide, thank you so much. I know I could (and have) just rep you, but I wanted to shout your name from the rooftops, too. Thank you, who?

If you're going to shout "WHO?" from the rooftops, more than ten people are likely to shout back at you. :D

Wow. Big changes. I'm unsure if I'll like them but I'll give it a go!

That linked post was a bit of a tl;Dr so my next question may already be answered.

They say the DSS will release probes and they can be synthesized. Does this mean the module will now need ammo? Synthesis implies materials, ergo a lot more SRV work if I'm thinking clearly.

Thanks for the link, I need to read more!

Yes. We don't know the recipe yet, but they did say it would be pretty simple (not require mats you can only get in the bubble)

To answer the original question: What are you up to? I recently made my first 1,000,000 credits and I now have two ships. One is a fully A rated Sidewinder named MSS Sunrise and the other is an almost A rated Eagle named MSS Aquila. I was just running data delivery missions and now that I have a reasonably agile Eagle I'm going to jump into the bounty hunting ring and try my luck there. Traveling, docking, planetary landings and evading interdictions I can do fairly decent so the next step is to build my combat skills and of course keep upgrading MSS Aquila till she's fully A rated.

That 6 million dollar man has an unlimited budget. Cool shots for sure. I soooo want a Vulture but that ship is way down on my list of ships, mostly because of the cost. I think an ugly puppy Adder is next on my list, maybe a Viper, after I muddle thru this combat stuff and get somewhat acceptable at it. Gonna be a long haul I'm sure.

If you think you're not that good at combat and want to practice, I really recommend Viper. Mk.III if you want a kind of a glass cannon that can hit hard and run away when things go pear-shaped, or Mk.IV if you don't mind worse agility and speed but want to be able to tank some damage, instead. Both are awesome ships.
Adder is definitely fun, but it's not a combat ship, therefore an unnecessary struggle for someone who wants to learn and try things.

You'll get one eventually - the cost isn't that high, relatively speaking ;)

On the way back from the fighting, I thought I'd see how the AFMU worked as I'd taken hull damage by being stupid. What I didn't realise is that the unit doesn't like to be activated during SC... lesson learnt!

Oh it can activate in SC alright. It just shuts down the module it's repairing, so it's a really bad idea to try and repair thrusters or FSD. :D

Just gotten off my favorite raw material planet after a half hour.

Accrewed over ten metallic metiorites and countless mesosiderite, with over 20 G4 raw mats in each avalible type on the surface.

Thank you Fdev :D Thank you very much!

Yet some people still cry "Grind!" :D

But yeah. I love zooming around the planets and I've never encountered a shortage of any surface-based element.

Just gotta know where to look is all :D Though G5 manufactured materials (Until Q4) are still a horrendous pain in the anus.

Yeah I do like surface prospecting every once in a while, unfortunatly the planet I was on earlier is a pretty barren flat ice world but the drop rates seem exceedingly good so it makes up for it. Though there are a few scattered about which have great lighting and fog effects on them, and they are a whale of a time to pootle about on. :D

Over the weekend, (the bad weather helped), I decided I wanted to try out a Clipper. So I ranked up with the Imperial Navy until I qualified for one, (Duke), then decided to rank on until I got to a King, (just for the kudos). I purchased a Clipper and outfitted/engineered it for maximum jump range, (got her to 47ly). Been flying around in it for a while and I might even venture into open with it! My exploraclipper is starting to become one of my favorite ships.
