Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Well, Im pretty new to the game, maybe 3 weeks in, but enjoying it overall. I just bought my fourth ship, after ditching the newb ones and a decent run in a high-end [no engineering yet, still figuring that out] Cobra 3 [christened: HMS Shagalactica] that was totally worth her salt. An amazingly capable ship for a newb like myself.

My current command is an Asp-X, and after transferring a few high end items off the Cobra before mothballing her, Im basically doing shake-down cruises on the Asp to see exactly how she behaves. Plan on keeping her for a while before the next upgrade.

Im still not really sure what function will be most pleasing for me to act as my main moneymaking/entertainment activity; but most likely I think it will be trade and courier to finance planned exploration jaunts. So far i do NOT like bounty hunting, mining of any sort [despite reading many threads I cannot for the life of me figure out how people make fortunes doing it; plus tedious af], avoid pvp like the plague, and have bungled my first random rescue opportunity [no ability to transfer fuel via limpets, I assumed as I powered away from the poor dieing ship :'( .

I was delighted recently securing my first permit to enter a restricted system [yay Sirius!], and am already a midshipman for the EDF.

Also delightful: inadvertently being the first ever to explore a planet! Which of course, I immediately lost total track of and will prolly never find again. Foolishly there is no game mechanic to mark/list your own First Scouting. But my name is out there somewhere among you great ones.... maybe one of you will rediscover it ;)

Once the Asp [her name: Quite Pleasant Really] settles and I feel confident in her I plan on a long jaunt directly upward to the "top" plane of the galaxy disk, to poke around and maybe find a few new virgin spots to lay my name on. Note to self: BOOKMARK them you idiot.... After that I will probably return to trying to cozy up to one of the early Engineers. Long after that? Maybe Colonia!

PS4 player, and bought a HOTAS4, but darn is it gonna be HARD getting used to where all the damn multi button combos wind up on that thing.

That's kinda what I was thinking regarding limpets. Cargo scooping is such a wrist slasher but I don't suppose mining is so boring if you can automate it.

I'd like to be a Jack of all trades but there are so many modules and I have such little space. You have to focus a little on the activities you'll mostly engage in.
Yes many ships can be described as multi role which means that they can be set up to do different things well but you need to change the set up between those roles, there are none that can be set up as omni role ships where they can do all things well with one set up.

I know what 'multi role' means, aRJay. I'm not that stupid.

But yeah, I try to store away modules I'm not using in case I need to switch missions types and can't find a place which sells the stuff I need. I just had a clear out though since my store got very cluttered. Plus I made a little bit of cash and cleared some space by getting rid of the Eagle. The iEagle is more suited for my purposes, I think.

It's nice to have someone around here who can flamboyantly speak proper Queen's English.

Don't worry too much about your function in the game. You've no doubt already bounced around a bit and tried different things, and you might discover that you like engaging in activities which didn't previously appeal.

And I've also avoided PvP after an early experiment before I went off exploring. Maybe try out some NPC pirate missions first as I was doing last weekend. They're pretty easy and it's good practice.

It is fun though, mapping your first planets and stamping your name down. I just think I'm kind've over it. A bit like having kids really. At some point enough is enough. Been there done that (I don't have kids but I reckon that's what it's like).

Just an unengineered Phantom. I chose a small plant and lots of E rated modules, so it runs at about 16% heat. No engineering yet, just haven't had the time. I picked a spot about 15.000 ly away, a bit south west and down from the Galactic core.

Nice. I could be mistaken because I'm no expert but I thought the D-Rated modules were better for exploring as they were lighter? I have no experience of a Phantom. I did do the 21,000ly to Colonia in a fully equipped Python, all the heavy guns and what not. I was jumping at around 35ly a go. I really enjoyed that trip.

If I may offer one piece of advice (and you may know this already), aim above or below your final destination point. What I mean is, plot a course that isn't 'level ground', if it is a well trod course, you will find a lot of pre-discovered systems. I always aim around 300-500ly (minimum) above or below my final destination point. That way I normally find a ton of systems never seen before. Hope that makes sense.

That's completely true. Even unengineered the Phantom still jumps plenty far though. I just like running a cool, power efficient ship and E rated modules are still relatively light on top of that. Bonus is less chance of overheating and less usage in general of the AFMU

Yeah that's what I meant with 'below' the Galactic core. I realize that's open to interpretation.

Took the Mamba out exploring today, because why not? The empty systems I flew through all agreed that I looked fabulous :)

Oh wow, my local Odeon is reopening on Friday with The Empire Strikes Back. I haven't seen any of the originals in the cinema so I'm definitely gonna go watch that.

Apologies for the spam. I'm just excited to see the cinemas back open, finally. 😃

And I'm from New Yawk. Go figgah.
Nice. Escape From New York and The Warriors are two of the best films from the 80's so you have a fine heritage.
