The thargoid bases are indeed scary. I spent my first half hour at one of these sites just inching towards the centre crater and looking around to see if there was anything following meWhile I have been fighting Thargoids for months, when it comes to the BIG buggers I have not been winning against them and though I've come close, I STILL count Cyclopses as the weirdest mofos in known Space.
BUT - recently, I've been reading up on the lore (I don't do that a lot) and found a new adventure to try. So for the past couple of days I've been searching for a Thargoid Sensor and a Thargoid Probe - I'm assuming you can guess what comes next.
After countess repetitions of being scanned by Cyclopses and running like hell, I've finally gotten my Probe and Sensor. I am currently HERE:

This is what ED is all about IMO - to find, to explore and to solve. I have, I believe, worked out the puzzle.
There is just one thing.
If I may offer a statement - one based upon my years playing this game, my skill and rank as an Explored and my delight in discovery:

Yes - I was having a bit of fun with the post; and I did have both a Probe and a Sensor in my hold to try to activate the machine. I'd learned how to drive onto the glowing bits to see the hologram, but getting ito position to release the item was a nightmare - it was taking me forever. In plain language, what with time wasted, Scavenger attacks, and I'm pretty sure running over eggs melt the SRV as well, I was down to 30% Hull when I made a run for it lol. As for the melting, are you sure you weren't carrying corrosive cargo. Several thargoid trade goods (non-materials) are corrosive and deplete your vessel's integrity as long as they remain in your hold.
It might have accepted it, usually takes a while to change. (Technical stuff I don't understand).
