Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Thermic alloys? As usual, signal sources (forgot which ones) or high level cargo missions - the ones where the competition sends assassins after you. After killing them, collect whatever they leave floating around.
Steer seems to be military vessels for USS - would war state help? Alas, not readily turning up any mission rewwars options while tootling in and around Archon Delaine territory

And RES sites - combat aftermath can result in thermic alloys being part of the blown up ship.
👍🏻
it was why I went RESLo, but all low grade mats from the popped balloons - might have to step up a tier and see if I can still survive...

May have been too cryptic - I really shouldn't post before my coffee :).
What I meant (with respect to missions): some of the higher level cargo missions will send up four Pythons/FdLs/Anacondas to intercept you. They usually drop decent materials after you destroy them. Of course, that means you'll need a cargo ship with teeth (or rather, a combat ship with some cargo space).

Gotcha.
And I need 2 coffees and have only had one...!

Hmm... not come across these before whilst exploring:

I wonder if that means first disco is still available ot there'll remain tagged to a deleted CMDR - if that's what it actually means...

War (sweary name) got a new paint job to strike mortal fear into my ennymeez:

With not many dangerous/deadly/elite ranked NPC's in the RES at the time, I decided to have a look at selecting an opponent and targetting specific modules. I tried both power and drive but neither seemed to have any more effect than just targetting the ship in general. Hmm.

A question though: if I have a module targetted, will my gimballed lasers and turreted MC's automatically hit that module? And what happpns once that is destroyed? Do I have to un-target it or do they just switch back ro the ship in general?

Or is all the above irrelevant when it comes to NPC's?

Feels like schoolboy stuff I should know but I've not tried this before!

Well if your beams don't kill them, you will kill them with that paint job by blinding them to death :)

Your weapons will target that module - and that goes for all weapons, gimballed, turreted, the micro-gimbals of some fixed weapons or the aimpoints for fixed weapons. Whether you hit it will depend on
  • movement of the enemy ship. Your weapons will shoot at where the ship's trajectory will intersect your ammo's trajectory if the ship doesn't change its vector. But even NPCs do that occasionally
  • layout of the enemy ship, i.e. anything that's in the way between your gun and the targeted module. Like, targeting a FAS's thrusters and then shooting it from the front isn't exactly the way to stop it without some collateral damage to, well, essentially everything else
  • penetration capability of your weapons. Likewise to the former point, targeting e.g. a Cutter's power plant and then shooting it with lazors isn't going to achieve much more than targeting just the ship. Your guns need to punch through the armor/hull before they can afflict damage to the power plant, so something with a bit of penetration capability is highly useful if you want to attack internal modules. Superpen rails may be a bit of overkill - but e.g. focussed PAs are rather nice to take out NPC Cutters. If I can hit the PP, it's usually 3-4 shots from the huge HP of my Mamba. Since I usually can't, I tend to blow out more ammo...

Time to hit the hazres!

Nice, wanted Elite 'Conda! Deploy hard points! Have at you!

Er... mining lasers?
Up close and personal. I like it :)
I once ambushed a 'conda pirate by hiding in the pipework until he stopped to loot the structure while his comrades were keeping security distracted in one of their raids.(They were very well organised).I don't know if they didn't see me, or were too distracted with the whole hatchbreaker routine, but i wasn't prepared for the behaviour exhibited when i unleashed the full power of my 1MW mining layzor at his engine from 300 m. For my part it was nothing more than a prank, but when i goosed him he took off like a scalded cat. :D
Funny thing is i wouldn't even have got involved if one of his crew hadn't tried to snipe me earlier whilst i was minding my own business on the deck.:giggle:

The Dyson Sphere Program has temporarily taken over my life. It's an Early Access game that's remarkably solid. I enjoy games that involve building and logistics, such as Factorio and Satisfactory, and this new one fits right in.

I won't bore you with details, but if you like that sort of game you might want to check it out.

Meanwhile, my carrier is waiting for me. I'll be back shortly, of course, I always am!
