Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

I am currently reinstalling the game because Steam had a catastrophic CTD, and lost the otiginal download, but also somehow managed to corrupt enough of my files that the game wouldn't launch, so I uninstalled it, and am in the process of redownloading and installing it and I hope beyond hope my Cmdr is still alive and I don't have to start a new cmdr when I get the game going again. But we'll see. I've still 7 hours left of download unless my speeds pick up (currently stuck at 5 Mbps). Other than waiting for the download to.. download. I've been reading Crystal Singer (just finished it) and Killashandra, by Anne McCaffrey. Killishandra is the 2nd of a series of three books by her, the 3rd is Crystal Line. All three are really good books, so if you're a sci-fi freak and have NOT read these three books, please consider doing so, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Good Luck CMDR!

Dont think you will need a new cmdr though, it should be bound to your login account.

Don't worry on that account. Your CMDR is locked to your FD acount. Unless FD messes up much worse than usual, he or she is safe.

What is local to your PC:
  • bindings
  • graphics settings
  • CMDR's log (i.e. what/where you did in the past)
  • visited stars cache
Oh crap. That means all the stars I visited are gone, I can't choose to show my previous flight paths when I am mapping? Everything I did? Standings etc? Or am I reading more into what you wrote than is there?

No idea what a CTD is , let alone a catastrophic one, but i never got on with steam so i'm not surprised if anything goes wrong with it. I'm trying to stay on the sidelines with this OD s*#itshow, but i really think it needs its own section on the forum, its too easy to confuse the two at the moment.
It's been a long time since i read any McCaffrey, Pern was memorable. My current SF fix is ' The Skinner', by Neal Asher. Worth a look, imo, some interesting concepts.

CTD Crash to desktop. A catastrophic CTD also wipes out, or corrupts files. A normal one just requires a program restart.

I'm actually back to grade 2 with Tod because I ditched the high capacity magazine for overcharged weapon, like with beam lasers, since I tend to lean a little more cautious rather than spray weapon fire everywhere. Maybe this will suit my 'aiming style' a little more.

Actually you are at grade 4 with Tod, as shown top left, and have completed grade 2 and reached grade 3 on that blueprint.
Before you leave Tod don’t forget to add an Experimental Effect as like increasing your grade/rank with Tod you cannot do it remotely.

Kammato still has cliffs, that you can jump off...

And....use your jet pack to climb back up again. 0.10G helps..... (y) :D(y)

I'm warming more to Odyssey now. It has its foibles, to be sure, but it does provide an even greater range of stuff to do.

I'm even - shock, horror, chin hitting the floor - getting used to UI.

I also can't believe this thread just keeps going :D. Whilst I don't, in any way, consider this "MY" thread ( it's OUR thread), I really do appreciate all the excellent contributions. So...

THANK YOU!

Oh well, glad you can enjoy it. I cant, so i will repost this from my own thread

I used to be an Odyssey player, just like you.
Then i took an Orange Sidewinder in the knee...

Yep, i just checked, it is still there... for more than half a day, during a weekend, with support response times of 5+ days

I did read some McCaffey way back when but it was Pern stuff which, to me,was more fantasy.

I used to read tons but I don't now. I blame Elite! Mind you, if you love sci-fi, may I recommend Donaldson's "Gap" series?

Edit: or, for something more trippy, China Mieville's Bas-Lag trilogy.

All the interesting stuff is on your HDD, in C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\ . There are multiple subdirectories - the ones with only a bunch of numbers contain the visited stars cache. You can check if that's still there and make a backup now (also advisable in any case if you have custom bindings - see Strontium Dog's howto in the PC subforum for details on that one).

All that data is also still somewhere on FD's servers, linked to your CMDR - but I have no idea how to get it from there. There is some in-game information in the right HUD, but since I'm long used to EDD (see below), I never really bothered to check them out.

In general, though, most people who value this info create accounts on EDSM and/or Inara. You, though, were going at it with such a speed that I at least simply forgot to mention these :). EDSM is (was) geared more towards exploration, Inara is a general purpose toolbox for everything player and player-to-player related.
In order to automatically update your history on these (and other player maintained sites, most of which get their data feed from EDDN), you need to either give the site access to your CMDR data via FD's servers (I think Inara works this way - I don't have an account there, and it's the only option for console CMDRs) or run one of the updater tools locally, like EDMC or EDDiscovery. The former has a few nifty screen overlays that show some useful information right in the game (unfortunately, that doesn't work in VR, so I don't usually use it any more), the latter still doubles as an autromated logbook and much more, reading your local logs and showing them in a better readable (and filterable) manner.

I was recently rereading McCaffrey’s Planet Pirates books which have a tie in to the origin books about Pern.

I read back when they were new Donaldson’s Thomas Covenant books and the first of the Gap books which I didn’t like enough to read more of, haven’t thought of his books in ages.
