Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Crap

There are only two ways of approaching faster than 75%@6s - 1) gravity well breaking (depends on approach vector) and 2) using the exploit of engaging SCA but staying off-course until very last possible time so it disengages at the station virtually instantly.

(I don't do 1 as I am crap at aligning it and I don't do 2 as it feels like cheating to me.)

Loop is actually second after a well performed gravity break (and ofc after SCA fast drop-off)

Below the supercruise comparison splitscreen movie
  • 75% all time
  • 7 (6) seconds rule (100% till 7s then 75% throttle)
  • loop
  • gravity break

Guess it will be a nice self-explanatory tutorial for the fresher pilots among us

Loop becomes slower with poor supercruise handling.
But how much?
Turning a T9 or even Anaconda around feels like an eternity, but it might still be only a few (or a dozer or two) seconds.

That is a complete load of rubbish. If you look at the video at 1:25 you will see the 6-sec apprach is like this:

6 no.jpg

So the path is cutting across the gravity well - that is why it takes the time it does.

Sorry - had a delivery so this bit was delayed:

You can see the effect of gravity well by looking at the throttle / speed indicator. this clearly shows that the 6sec approach was slowed by the gravity well. e.g:

6 no A.jpg

So I maintain that 75%@6 is faster than LOS as long as the pilot isn't taking a stupid approach. ;)

Thank you! Glad to be here!
And yes, one of the things I would like to learn is manual docking and flying without supercruise, because those module slots can be used for something else.

..Wish me luck, I might attempt it tonight.
Hey there, welcome to the game.

Allow me to point you to the docking tutorial, which is weirdly located in the Challenge Scenarios section of the training stuffs. You can dock as many times as you wish without risking anything at all. Try dumb stuff. Get confused. Crash into things. Until eventually docking becomes easy :)

I myself use the docking computer regularly for my larger ships, and even on the smaller ones much of the time. But I'm quite good at manual docking, even in a Cutter. I just like the automated docking. I have Supercruise Assist installed only on a couple of ships that I use for exploring systems. I find it handy sometimes to let SCA do the work when traveling to a very distant planet while I do something else (like posting here!).

You can access the training area from the main menu, or from the right panel of your ship.

So, talking about assistant, any CMDRs collect the mess (mfg mats) manually after exploding someone's ship?? 😛 I tried limpets, but I hate the fact that they have limited life time so I have to take tons of them out and cannot restock them with just one single click like ammo.
It depends on what I am flying if it is easy to scoop in like a Chieftain then I wouldn’t dream of using limpets something where it is more hard work and that has the space then of course limpets. I don’t target the specific items so they last longer but then they get collateral damaged in the next fight if it happens soon enough.

I feel daft. I still have SCA equipped but I always flew myself to everything. Somehow, I didn't even realize it could do that.
Due to annoyances with "Object is obscured", I quickly keybound supercruise to another key and kept using that instead of the button for SCA, even when there was no need for it..

..Welp, at least I know I can remove it.
The other thing some people use SCA for which I don’t see the point of is zeroing the throttle after a jump.

I'm still a newish player at 3 months in game, and still manage a couple of "Loops of shame" a week
Don’t worry about people still do it after years in the game, some even claim to do it deliberately either as way to save a few seconds or to throw an aggressor off.

That is an excellent shout, thank you!
I should probably spend some time in the simulator on a lot of tasks before I smash my pretty ship up with real accidents. :ROFLMAO:
You should indeed, apart from anything else because the scenarios repeat they are a great way of refining your control bindings.
You should be aware that some of the scenarios are actually harder than situations you are likely to encounter in the game so don’t be too discouraged at failures.

I prefer to "nod it off" when I approach a bit too fast, rather than do a loop. I cut throttle to zero, pitch down 90 degrees for a couple secs, then back up to point at the station again and resume my approach.

Same difference I suppose, but it seems easier and cleaner to me.

Honestly, that's probably a good thing.

That means if I can complete the training I will actually be prepeared for the real thing.
Oh it is but we have seen people in full dummy out of the pram mode because the training was too hard, usually the clue was in the word Advanced in the title, so I thought a little forewarning would be fair.

I'm just amazed people can find slot space for things like SCA, I always seem to be scratching around for the last slot.
Same here, I rather carry a surface scanner on the rare slot 1s.

And its not just the loop of shame. 1.5 yrs in the game and my first docking attempt in a cutter yesterday resulted in a rebuy because I boosted and clipped the edge of the station as I tried to approach the slot faster.

I love seeing how different CMDR's equip their ships - gives me food for thought!

Being the lazy toad I am, I fit the SCA (and ADC) to every single ship I own. The only exception is my mining cutter where, although I kept the ADC, I made way for a DSS instead of cruise control.

Today my Disembark button is working again, so I was able to sell my exobiology data to the strange girl who showed up to work. She looks nothing like the one I hired. In fact none of my crew look anything like their pictures, nor do they seem to know who I am. Very strange. :p

I made the princely sum of 157,000 credits -- just about 1% of the weekly upkeep on the service. Good thing I have other sources of income, cuz this thing ain't gonna come close to breaking even :p

The carrier interior is weird like outposts are. I get the "no gravity, magnetic contacts active" warning, but there's clearly gravity. I can walk. The lifts work. No one's hair is flying around. My crew who is standing around in the halls (doing nothing as I suspected all along) are shifting weight from leg to leg like you do when standing in gravity.

They really should just retcon the lore, instead of paying lip service to it with just a warning message, and nothing else.

But despite all that I had a good time doing some more exploring and seeing some new sights. I even found a bunch of Fonticula for Tyres to admire (cuz he loves those things).

Bah!

All your fonticula are belong to us! Take off every zig.

EDIT: Lummy, look what I just did without even realising I was that close:

Anyway, still surface mining. That huge crater have some nice amount of low grade mats.

I just put a collector on my FDL for mat gathering esp in cz's a little bit ago otherwise I usually manually pick up mats. You can syth limpets just 4 at a time tho.

As this is the newcomers forum, just s clarification:

You can't put a collector limpet controller ON an FSD. Rather, you fit the controller as a separate module and load your cargo racks with limpets.

Sorry if that sounds pedantic! :D
