Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Did you accidentally turn off Flight Assist?

As far as I know, it's on press-and-hold mode so it should have been hard to have on by accident. At 10km altitude I even tried to zero the throttle, go to menu, lower mouse sensitivity and return; I got back just before it hit the deck, but I still had no control. How did it hit the deck with zero throttle set? 😾

I had disabled my docking computer because it had gotten completely stuck trying to land and was just hovering for over a minute without moving. Landed manually, hadn't turned it back on - but it's a docking computer, not a take off computer. As far as I know, I hadn't just disabled flight assist that way.

Maybe I should have done the old immediate exit and relog Horizons trick, idk.

Submitted a ticket, asked if they could reset me. I will happily jump back in if they can sort me out, but I'm not sure I've got the will to start with all that again after such a loss. If FDev support doesn't help with things like this, I never want to explore again, and that's 90% of my gameplay.

--

Edit oh god... I checked the game settings. Flight Assist is on toggle and on Z... that's not the button I set! I have it on Mouse 4 as press and hold! Why are my bloody keybinds not how I set them? I must have clipped it by accident

Arguably I have nobody to blame but myself. Although I would say, if FA stays off between landing and launch, that's a noob trap. You should never get a launch with FA off by accident.

It wasn't something like losing your bindings was it?

Sooo... the game decided, upon launch from a 1.6g planet... to completely randomise my mouse controls. Or maybe it just suddenly got hypersensitive, I don't know. Either way, I no longer had control of my ship. I couldn't point it in any direction consistently.

Hit the ground. Exploded.

Weeks of travel time, 55 million of exploration data, 1.5 million in codex discoveries, unknown amounts of bio data.

Gone. Progress erased by a bug.

Sure, I have the photo journal, and I guess I have the materials gathered, but... it was all meant to be progressing towards faction rep and bio ranking thingy. I can't think of the word right now, I'm so angry. This has been so much time invested to have it removed in such a way.

Might be done with this game, at least for a while. I will submit a support ticket and see if there is anything they can do to reset me. I'm just... incredibly frustrated.

I didn't "like" your post because it's tragic.

I wouldn't touch the game for now and file a ticket. See if they can restore you to the day before or something. Just explain what went wrong and see if they can't pull a backup for you.

Hmmmm... did you have any other controller besides kb&m set up in ED, and was that controller possibly not present/bugged at startup? In th ebindings directory, there's a dated BindingLoadingErrors.log - if the time/date matches your session start, then something was detected as wrong when you started your game and the game reverted to the defaut bindings (and yes, "Z" is the default button for FA toggle).

You can open the log in a text editor and check what the game thought was wrong.

It wasn't something like losing your bindings was it?

It was behaving oddly earlier, pressing F10 was taking high res screenshots as though things had gotten stuck with a toggle (alt) on... But other keybindings are as normal, just I swear Z is not what I had flight assist set to. I think that is the default, and I possibly touched it instinctively on the way down because the landing computer was stuck and I haven't used FA-off since running some CZs in January...

Which does make me feel that had the landing computer worked I wouldn't be in this state 😾

Just explain what went wrong and see if they can't pull a backup for you.

Yeah, I have submitted a ticket explaining that I had an unexpected loss of control resulting in losing weeks of scan data and asking if they can maybe put me back where I was. For now, my rebuy is parked in Jameson and I'll just not touch anything.

The worst part is I had just turned around to head back and hand it all in. Just 30 mins previously I'd hit the "deepest" star I could reach, with the next one being ~220ly away. Job done, mission complete, black sky seen. But for some reason, 32 jumps from home, I just wanted to go land on that really hot metal rich planet and see if it had any needle crystals 😾

I'm very demoralised right. I know none of it "matters", it's all numbers on a screen, I was only going to turn the data in for faction rep in my weird quest to get an ally in most of the bubble systems. None of it's real; but it's just suddenly having weeks of investment towards those numbers get erased in such a way. Crashed my mood something rotten.

Tell you what though, it has reminded me again that exploration is the riskiest part of the game. It's not CZs or PvP, it's the ability to lose weeks-months of your time with a single event. It doesn't feel right to me that we can lose all that with no checkpoints. Why do we get first landing tags immediately but scanning and discoveries need handing in?

It's stories like this that make me so paranoid that I cut my trips short. That's why I can't wait to get a carrier, so I can go out and stay out and dump my data at the carrier each day rather than having to fly all 5 to 6000 light years back to base.
Before Fc's were a thing, intrepid explorers relished the danger - imagine circumnavigating the entire galaxy in an AspX using only the seat of your pants for protection... :D

I mean, before Horizons it was really hard to die while exploring 😹

I do feel like the exploration mechanics haven't caught up with the ways the game can kill you. The first footfall stuff really irks me because now I will have them on planets that nobody has ever scanned or discovered...

But I think if that's the case, my question is: why can you launch with FA off? Under what circumstances is launching with FA off not much more dangerous than with FA on? Why does it not reset on landing as common sense might expect?
As for the why: because FD says so - and because the FA-Off pilots would then complain that FA resets without manual intervention (which - probably - is the reason why you can switch FA between "toggle" and "hold").
Dangerous depends on what you're used to - mostly. And there are people out there (not me) who prefer to fly exclusively in FA off. On the plus side, it makes controlling the ship on all 6 dof easier, you don't have to fight the autopilot to make the ship do what you want. On the minus side, you have to control all 6 dof manually, which can make flying the ship more difficult.

Yes, it's tough when that happens. Take a break from ED. We can talk about FA-off training after you're back.

I see the point of that... but I've been using the scan data to get allied with the bigger factions. The 55m credits isn't anything to me, but losing enough to be allied with 4 factions and the exo biology rank is upsetting.

What's Colonia like these days?

As of January - still small. The stars are nice, and it's probably a good spot to go out on exploration runs with (edit because accidentally pressed submit) but the trade opportunities are very limited. Doing the trade CGs is painful, even with the lower threshold, because you end up just waiting for stations to produce another batch every 10 mins. Mostly I was sat on the pad for half an hour each run.

Could we talk about training flight computers to recognise a point of no return whereby they automatically stop the descent if the pilot is about to make a lethal error? Even cars have auto braking now 😹
A lot of things in this game don't make much sense. Examples:
  • A Mamba boosting along at 600 MPS seems fast until you realize that a Mig 29 on full afterburner would come past it like it was a herd of grazing cattle.
  • An F15 can automatically target its enemies, yet here we are able to do multiple times the speed of light and it can't be done.

Well, that Mig (according to Wikipedia - and that means unless the specs there aren't the real specs) tops out at 670 m/s. It masses a measley 18 tons compared to the Mamba's (in my loadout) 474 tons. If you want comparisons, take a Viper - 896 m/s at 67 tons.

If you want to compare the Mamba against something, an Airbus A380 would be closer to the mark.
