Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Yeah... The Pilot. Kinda my entry drug for this game.
I don't really agree with his "fragile" assessment of the DBX. It's Achilles heal is being a small ship only able to fit at best 4A fuel scoop. He talks about only 1 AFMU, and a small class 3 on at that being an issue. But a 3A AFMU and a load of materials for synthesising more ammo for it, is perfectly fine to cover a couple of hundred thousand light years with FSD damaging neutron star jumps without docking at a station (done this myself). I'm certain you could circumnavigate the galaxy with that set up too.

The first time I bought ARX, I wondered how I'd feel about that in the morning. I guess it was OK 'cause I just bought it for the fifth time, and this time, not the smallest pack. Although, the Steam pricing is very disengenous for there is no savings on the first four sizes.

BUT IT DOESN'T SOUND DISINGENUOUS, NOW THAT IT BOUGHT ME THE COVAS LEO VOICE.

Does Leo's voice remind anyone of a certain Holographic personality?

Hollie from Red Dwarf! That'll be 8,850 ARX!
And he gets all his knowledge from "The Junior Encyclopedia of Space". We're talking April, May, June, July and August fool. Wheeze of the week, mate

Well, as I'm playing it more on the slow side, just doing what I feel like doing at that moment, I think it would still make sense to make that 'stepping stone' to be a decent ship, as it will have to last some time. And as I don't have access to that FSD, yet, I need something to unlock it. So using upgrading this ship that will be dedicated to this role for some time seems to be the logical option to get where I want to.
Right now, I only have Fed rank of midshipman, as I am working around the area of Suthe, right next to Elvira Martuuk's home system.
I intend to stay here until I have unlocked all I think I need, which may take some time as I have to get hold of all those precious materials needed to do that.
In my opinion, a decent ship, that's basically possible with every ship from Coriolis table. That all depends what you build it for. Stepping stones are also kind of gone with Ody just due to the fact that small and at some extent medium ships have an added value for Ody and are on pair with large due to that. I. e. you won't make a mistake by outfitting a FAS (or any other, up to a Sidewinder) in any case, worst case you won't like how it performs for what you've build it and abandon it for a time, but then be back and repurpose.

A logical step from Asp, even if the price is high, is a Krait. Or you can get a Clipper if you don't mind large ship + have rank. The key is that those are multipurpose ships. Both Feds and Ally ships are more niche (no criticism involved, it just kind of handles and feels different, again, in my opinion), it's like something fine tuned for some more special thing. But if you're just stepping in, i think Krait is the way to go. Can haul, can fight and can do anything mission related as well in a more or less acceptable manner. And if you go with Phantom, then can explore. All up to you ofc, some do not like some ships, and you never know before you fly one. Get what you like, try it and don't get disappointed if you don't like it - keep it in handgar and get something else.

Ok right so how come that looks like a quote?
Grats on both engi and ranks!

I'm slowly getting closer to Colonia, just something over 9,000LY to go.

Like Tyres I'm kinda thinking about staying around there for a while.

I love the sky out that way. As I get closer and closer the sky just keeps getting more and more beautiful

On today's stop I scanned a couple of high-value systems, and made over 15 million. Not too shabby. I'm inching slowly toward Elite I in exploration.

I landed on this lovely planet to search out some Bacterium Cerbrus, nothing too fancy. The planet surface was lovely, though, with some very nice mountain ranges.

Next stop -- somewhere else I haven't been yet. :)
I believe in the Bubble. All these doomsayers, ok, and where can we get these amounts of Tritium if not in the Bubble? But ye, on the other hand who knows...

There's something weird going on with the game sense the latest update, the worst being that I lose my plot completely. I've always done 1000Ly plots with no filters and set on "Most Economical", I get roughly halfway through the plot and get a lost connection error and after relogging, everything's missing, all my data from previously scanned systems, the plot - everything.

If I bookmark the last system in the plot that will remain and the last system I left from is where I'm at upon relog. I've run deep scans on my Samsung 5TB SSD with no errors detected and did the same for my Elite Dangerous files, nothing, everything's healthy. My neighbors have DSL and cable internet which I barrowed and tried, same connection error.

5 plots, 5 connection errors. Also, I've noticed I'll spend twice as much time in the FSD tunnel as I did before the update. This has made the game almost unplayable for me, I'm thinking it's my local ED server here in San Jose, Ca. it's seemed really sluggish sense the update happened. When I'm using the FSS scanner, sometimes all the planet info doesn't show up. I don't know, anybody else notice strange goins' ons?
Longer FSD tunnel is surely a connection issue - on your side, on server side, or somewhere in between. I know that because my internet connection (like many other things over here) is very relaxed. So when i see it i always start to swear and rush to connect to another network that i have, sometimes it works (just that in my case an ISP issue is more likely than a server issue). Ruling out ISP/router that way.

I don't know how servers are working in ED, but generally a VPN from another region (like EU if US or another US far enough from you) should be an option. Idk if allowed for ED, so that needs to be checked, mb someone used it here... But it will rule out an issue on some host on the way of your signal, as routing will be different. But again needs confirmation if allowed for ED, i never tried that here.

It sounds a bit like howling wind to my ear. I like it's looks - it's screams utility explorer ship, which is exactly how I use it. I do sideways glance at the Dolphin as an alternative sometimes, but it doesn't quite add up for me. I can't find a niche for it to fill in either of my commanders fleets.
I find the sound of the DBX a bit annoying especially when I am hunting hard to find biologicals so flying a few metres above the planets surface, looks wise it reminds me a bit of a helicopter gunship. The scooping speed I find annoying when travelling any distance but it is less of an issue exploring where there is no need usually to do more than a single jump at a time.

My Dolphin I use in various roles, it is my usual choice for a bubble taxi/rares trader with about 30 tonnes capacity, swap out a cargo rack for an SRV and it is my usual choice for a small explorer. The view is a little restricted to the sides but the engine noise is much less intrusive and if you want to race its ability to deal with heat let’s you start the next jump much sooner than any other ship without using heat sinks.

It has to be the same voice actor. I've been tempted to get Leo for the lol factor. I did pay £2.99 to get Madeline as my fleet carrier traffic controller.

Not only is Leo voiced by Norman Lovett who played the male Holly, Cleo is performed by Hattie Hayridge who was the female Holly. Yes they do play to that characterisation.

I don't know who performs D.A.R.K. but they are a rather good Spock (Leonard Nimoy) impersonation.

Oh wow! My ears did not make it up! Success! Now I'm practically famous, flyin with Holly.

Best 8,850 ARX I ever spent!

My ED server is about 20 miles away from me (32 Kilometers), the ping wasn't bad before, I use 5G with a pretty strong signal. I'm less than 1/4 mile from facebook and I'm sure they require a massive fiber backbone judging by the cooling towers on the buildings. IDK, I'm checking my antivirus software and router firewall but nothing has been changed, I'm stumped.

And Carina is Marina Sirtis. I'm not familiar with "Cleo" - where does she appear?

You do get free Arx for doing various activities in the game. How much you get for each thing isn't clear. It's not based on hours, though. If I'm doing missions, for example, I easily rack up 400 Arx in a few days. Out exploring, though, I hardly get any even after many hours.

Anyway, it's free stuff either way ;)
Explorers get their Arx when they turn their exploration data in. Thus, as long as you stay out there with no contact to UC, you might end up getting about nothing and a half.

Not true.
Jumping around and scanning stuff also gives ARX, albeit at quite slow pace. Still getting 400 in shorter period of time than a full week is entirely possible.
Sure. Gave me about three Arx for honking every system I entered while hauling data (and running from mercs at that). But when I turned the cartographic data in the next time, although the credits were quite meager, the Arx got up into the double digits.
