Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

My neighbor complains and complains and complains about the price of gas.

He drives a $75,000.00 6,000 pound Cadillac Escalade with a huge 6.2 liter V8 in it that has a 30 gallon gas tank on it and gets 15 miles per gallon.
I just googled for pictures of the Escalade. I don't think it would fit down some country lanes near me!
Diesel has gone up a lot in the last 15 years, but it's still cheaper than gas/petrol unless you get a hybrid electric.
My diesel that's 10 years old averages about 35 miles per US gallon and can reach 45 mpg on a run. Zero to 60 time is 5.9 seconds and mid range there are few V8s that can keep up. Electronically limited 155mph - never got near that top soeed. It growls too, though not with the same charisma a good V8 growls. The legal queeze on manufacturer average CO2 emissions means this twin turbo V6 diesel is no longer offered in this car.
Only in Land Rovers and Range Rovers. That's OK as I would not buy it again. I want electric or maybe a gas/petrol electric hybrid next time, but I'll be keeping my old car going as long as possible. I'm only doing 4500 miles a year, so that could be some time.

Medium intensity CZ is fun! Got G3 P-15 on my way to it.

So can I fly my ship to shoot down the dropships??? The payout had covered the cost of the G3 P15 completely 🤟

Here's the rub:

Back when I was a kid, we had a lot of diesel cars as well. One of the best was the Volvo Turbo Diesel. We had one. That thing would roll, looked good and still got 30 to 35 MPG out on the highway.

But big U.S. oil companies didn't like that. They didn't make as much money off of diesel because it was a much lower grade of fuel than regular gasoline was. What's more, it performed better and they didn't like that either.

So what they did was got together and cooked up the scam of "special" diesel oil that "burns cleaner" but "cost a bit more" to refine.

SPOILER ALERT: It doesn't.

But it didn't stop them from increasing the price by three times. You used to roll into a gas station and see REGULAR: $1.89 / DIESEL: .99 or something like that. Then, literally overnight, it went to REGULAR: $1.89 / DIESEL: $2.89. - and it's gone up from there ever since.

They did it intentionally. Fleet trucks (big semis) were given subsidies so they still paid the old price. That kept the trucking companies happy. Everybody else started getting rid of their diesels as fast as they could because they suddenly became unaffordable to drive.

They still are. That's why you will not find one single diesel powered car for sale anywhere in the United States.

The only thing left are trucks, which are bought mostly with gas engines except for those folks that work in really heavy duty jobs - construction, hauling heavy loads, etc. or who own large boats or camper trailers they need to haul around.

All of that said, as for "old cars", I still drive a 2009 Volvo S60 T5 2.5 liter Turbo. I just put new struts, shocks and tires all the way around last year. It still runs great and I have my big Kenwood stereo in it, so I'm happy. The gas mileage has suffered a bit with age - it only gets around 28 mph on the highway now and around 19 in town, but it beats the hell out of the 15 on the highway and 8 around town that big behemoth Escalade gets.

Or I have my trusty 2007 Vmax. It gets horrible mileage for a bike (only about 30) but that's the price you pay for 4 large Mikuni carburetors pumping enough gas to pound out 145 horsepower on a 1200 CC V4.

My wife drives a 2014 S60. It still gets close to 35 mph on the highway and around 20 around town. When our daughter graduates from College next year, I want to get a new CT5 Cadillac. (2.0 liter, 40 mpg, 270 hp). But we'll see.

Medium CZs are great. Done a fair few but I should move on to high's now :D

I haven't tried shooting at a drop ship, either from the ground or from my ship. I tend to take the drop ship option myself rather than pick a side when entering the hot zone.

I have a feeling you can take them out though.

Why not try and let us know? For science?

Question: By "combat zone" do you guys mean a mission where you're supposed to eliminate a number of people from a certain faction?

I'm a complete noob to the on foot stuff, but after I get back to the bubble from this trip I plan on getting into them again and I've never seen anything labeled "Combat Zone" in the on foot missions.

I'm just doing on-foot combat in various CZs at the moment. Found a whole bunch of them on various moons in the HIP 35096 system:

So far it's been a bit of a challenge doing these here as every CZ has been at night and my suit has no night vision. I can hardly see what I'm doing and keep crashing into walls and so on as I'm just groping around. I'm thinking: "Oh no, not another engineer grind so I can upgrade my suit and weapons," but have found out there's no need, as using the Inara outfitting search I've so far managed to find an already engineered grade 2 Dominator suit and got one grade 3 weapon. Even so, my suit still has no night vision so I guess I need to find a higher grade still...

Whatever, in spite of all that I'm gradually getting used to it and have managed to kill quite a few enemy soldiers, helped my faction win several battles, and have earned quite a bit in combat bonds.

I've mothballed my Mamba for the time being, as even though I've managed to kill several NPC pirate ships with higher combat ratings than my one of Expert, I've also lost my ship a few times, especially when I get impatient ( so at least for now) it's bye-bye bounty hunting in space.

I'm getting about doing shopping trips for upgraded suits and weapons in my Asp X, as thanks to help from Felicity I've managed to get its jump range up to about 57 LY. (y)

The "combat zone" is a similar thing to ship ones in that you pick a side to fight for. You can do this from a station - look for the Frontline Solutions counter - or when you get to the zone itself.

I prefer the former as you get on to an auto-taxi-dropship and get taken there. They can't blow up your SRV or ship that way. If you die, you get given the option to withdraw or do nothing and get thrown back in. Do your part!

The elimination you refer to is a mission type mostly given under the combat section.

OK, may be I take my FDL to give it a try.

My IC don't have gunz its just a uber fast taxi for me.

... and the more they use grenades - at least that's what I've seen - and grenades are eeeeeveeeel

It's not evil it's just modern convenience. You know "close only counts when you're throwing grenades" well the corollary if you crunch the logic is "grenades are convenient sometimes". For example, look at these three lovebirds I caught lolligagging in line next to a wall. Three murders with one throw. Havin a nice day guardy-guards? CANCELED (00:00:21)

So where do you find these on foot combat zones?

If you are in a system at war or civil war you can see the yellow crossed sword icons on certain settlements. Those are the ground CZs. You cannot see these icons unless you are physically in the system. Viewing the system when you are elsewhere does not show the icons.

You can join the CZs by landing at a station, not outpost, and going to the Frontline Solutions desk. There you can see the level of the zone (low, med, high). Join the one you want and then go to the elevator that designated for Frontline Solutions. You'll wind up in a dropship that will fly you to the zone, and drop you off there.

Note that the system map itself does NOT label the zones low, medium, and high. There is actually no way to tell what they are from there, you have to go land at one to find out. For that reason I usually use the Frontline Solutions desk at first, so I know which zone to pick. After that I take my own ship :)

When the fight ends you have to hit a special key (F7 for me) to see the score info, and get a ride back to the station (if you took the dropship in). You'll find the binding for this key under On Foot Controls, Miscellaneous section. It's called "Open Conflict Zone Battle Stats". Make sure it's bound to something!

You can also join them by flying down in your ship, landing somewhere outside the settlement (at least 500m away or more), then walk in. You can pick a side by invoking the special key again. You can also pick it from your ship when you land (if you're close enough the info will pop up).

If you want to replay the zone there are a couple of ways.
1) If you took the dropship you'll wind up back at the station, so just join again from the Frontline Solutions desk.
2) If you took your ship, you can get back in the ship, fly off into supercruise, and then come back
3) I have heard (but not verified) that you can also log off and on while in your ship or SRV, and that will reset the zone

If you log off and on while on foot and NOT in your ship or SRV, you'll respawn back at the last station you docked at. Your ship will remain where you left it however, so you'll have to take an Apex to go get it (or pay to have it transferred to the local shipyard).

A couple of notes:
Dying while engaged in the conflict zone does not count as a real death. You just respawn and re-enter the fight. There's no penalty or rebuy.
High CZs are quite profitable, compared to other on-foot stuff which is generally severely underpaid.

They are a fun way to earn some bucks and learn how to use your weapons and suits. And you increase your Mercenary rank.
