What do you miss from Alpha/Beta?

I'm a beta backer, and I miss a lot of the things from beta, even if some of them are no longer necessary or have been succeeded by better mechanics/graphics/the like.

-I miss the sounds of weapons that I hear from the alpha videos on Isinona's YouTube channel.
-I miss the black and white commodities menu.
-I miss trying to jump out of SC less than 20km from the station, overshooting much of the time.
-I miss being able to hold z and fly at top speed endlessly (perfect for travelling large distances).
-I miss the clunky old Beta 1 UI a bit.
-I REALLY miss the amazing simplicity of NPC piracy, where you would shoot at an NPC trade ship until he dropped cargo, which was almost a definite (Please FD, bring this back temporarily, until piracy is updated to be worthwhile) and he wouldn't try to kill you with his one C1 pulse laser.
-I miss the old, cringe-worthy sound your engine made during those un-avoidable interdictions.
-Am I crazy or did the ship AI sound colder, more lifeless? I miss that a bit.

And just feelings you can't get anymore:

-I miss being petrified by larger ships
-I miss the congregations of players in Eranin/LP 98-132/I Bootis/Aulin (My Old Worlds :)).
-I miss the feeling of scooping up my first stolen palladium and jumping from 8,000 Cr to 14,000 Cr, my first quintuple digits!
-I miss the feeling of finding my first uninhabited system, and wandering around until I happened upon a USS with a mostly destroyed Cobra with toxic waste around it. Also, transporting that waste to a station as it ate away at my hull, expecting a huge reward, only to get paid a measly next-to-nothing.

So, what do you guys miss? And FD, I'm really serious about section 1 line 6 :p

^ lol but personally the combat graphics

there was a whole thing i started awhile ago

alot saw it
alot didnt

i did

and while it wasnt "as realistic"....it looked amazing.

  • Arriving at 20 Kms from the station which was time enough to switch everything off so as to drift in slowly all iced up to really feel like you were running silent
  • Arriving at 20 kms so you an an incentive to try to drop manually to arrive at 2 kms and risk hitting the station
  • Cargo Spilling from ships that explode, so you could, after the station or Police blew up a smuggler, sneak a canister or two from the debirs for yourself
  • The view from Azeban Orbital, I know it is still; there but is that the only outpost in a brilliantly low orbit over a world?
  • All the no longer see commodity goods like Water, wood, Leisure Equipment, suppression grenades, animal feed, ceramics, glass. I know we have wool but that I guess in natural fibers, and leisure equipment domestic appliances or consumer technology, but the others seem to still have a place.
  • Tea runs to and from Isherwood Ring, Eta Cehphei, when you had to manually plot your jumps.
{*} The old pulse laser sound effect would be perfect for the Class 3 (& 4?) one for variety

The bobblehead.

Amen. They must have removed it for performance reasons, because more than ship skins I would have paid real money to get a custom bobblehead! :D

I also miss the "rare" weapons that were available. Overcharged, heat efficient, high capacity... It made going from system to system worth it to find stations that sold the good stuff. I really, really hope this makes a return in a future update. It could be expanded to other equipment as well: shields, scanners, power plants, what have you. It doesn't need to turn into Diablo, but finding the uncommon gear felt like an accomplishment and it added an additional and welcome complexity to outfitting.

It would also be cool to learn of systems renown for making exceptional hardware, to encourage pilots to make the trip.

On the plus side, they are looking at bring the modified weapons back and when they do hopefully it can be expanded to modules as well.
As this list shows, there are plenty of systems that claim to host Corporations offering better equipment

As with many aspects of ED, the ingredients are there, they just need to be mixed into the bowl. ;)

I miss:

- The general lack of whine threads on every possible imaginary slight, bug, broken mechanic or whatever else happens to be stuck in their nappies at the moment.
- The lack of pointless polls on all of the above, and then some.
- The lack of pointless petitions on all of the above, and then some.
- The relative lack of trolls and other maladjusted social deviants who delight in pestering the newbies these days.
- The rarity of 'I quit!' rant threads by people who keep playing after their dramatic interwebz tirade over whatever made them mad enough to faux-quit in the first place.
- All of the interesting variations on weapons that would occasionally show up, but were yanked right before release.
- Bobblehead!

:D

^ Exactly this (thanks for saving me typing it!)

The bobblehead (of course!)
The Anaconda's blind spot
Most of all I miss actually doing something more than just pressing a button for "instant stealth mode". The idea that you could coast along with Flight Assist off with all modules cold and dark, match your rotation up with the station, and just disappear off the scanner was so cool. Now it's just "instant gratification stealth". Ho hum, where's the challenge in that? "Oooo I'm a smuggler coz I know how to press the silent mode button."

The punishing collision model..... I Need to really work hard at splatting on the station walls now.... I still manage it sometimes tho :D

The friendly nature of the forums (not pointing fingers I am sometimes as bad as the rest but back in alpha/beta generally our complaints were more constructive and the over all outlook was more positive )

Like the book.... Docking WAS (more) difficult
