What do you miss from Alpha/Beta?

I'd forgotten how haunted Dahan Gateway used to be. I was only caught up in its games a few times thankfully, but it always had me on edge. It could be amusing though if it shifted while you were making your approach - a massive jolt followed by a cloud of assorted cargo canisters as everyone inside was obliterated.

I remember getting stuck in BEAGLE 2 Landing in Asellus Primus a few times, and later avoided that station like the plague.

Then, when I became hostile to Freeport after bounty hunting in the LP 98-132 nav too much, I got stuck in that station in my Eagle, and I couldn't leave because I would get insta-murdered. That's when I truly learned about silent running.

- Running the Freeport player blockade with a cargo of stolen gold and no fuel to get anywhere else

I never did this myself, as I didn't gold farm, but it sounds like a ton of fun.

The draw distance and denser asteroid fields
The asteroid fields that I fly in seem to be quite dense, often with me flying through two rocks with just enough space and the like, but I fly an FdL, and I can't remember the LP 98-132 RES sites too well.

I miss the very high likelihood of running into names you were familiar with from the forums. Though obviously it was to be expected as the game grew.

This ^.

Plus >

  • Players sidling up to each other for screenies and wing-waggling hellos
  • The non-whining forum... Seriously, someone needs to change the sound quality of the forums... it's like listening to someone scratching a blackboard
  • The sense of wonder every time a new feature or update came out (remember the huge leap in graphics quality when Beta came out for example)
  • And at later stages the challenge in leaving SC as close as possible to the station

I miss:

- The general lack of whine threads on every possible imaginary slight, bug, broken mechanic or whatever else happens to be stuck in their nappies at the moment.
- The lack of pointless polls on all of the above, and then some.
- The lack of pointless petitions on all of the above, and then some.
- The relative lack of trolls and other maladjusted social deviants who delight in pestering the newbies these days.
- The rarity of 'I quit!' rant threads by people who keep playing after their dramatic interwebz tirade over whatever made them mad enough to faux-quit in the first place.
:D

I am though very pleased with the new forum rules results, I had given up on the forum until then

I DON'T miss Dahan gateway - It was kinda spooky when you pressed "Return to surface" and were then instantly in space. Freaked me out the first time...

But the moment when it disappeared just as you were going to dock was a bit cool...

The other thing I DON'T miss is the landing pad allocations... "Go to pad 4... Wait... Go to pad 23... Go to pad 11... Go to pad 42... Go to pad 11". Fined for loitering - LAZORZ!!!!!!! "Would you like a new Sidewinder?"

(I think the game has improved a bit since alpha :D:D )

They're definitely helping to separate the signal from the noise, aren't they? :D

Definitely. Happy to be back.
On the other hand, I don't miss anything really as I wasn't a beta backer.
If anything, I miss the feeling of excitement, waiting for the game to come. Now I have become a better husband in order to justify my ED habit. So all is good in the hood.

I miss the friendships and closeness of the early Alpha, it was so more friendly back then. Was live and let live, not as it seems now, you see someone and most of the time they open fire without warning, even if you have an empty cargo hold.

I liked that too Steve...
But - in early beta I remember the times when FD announced a wipe and people would try out new stuff...

I kitted out my Cobra with 4 missile launchers, hid in stealth, and atacked players - Just to see if the game could handle 48 missiles on screen at the same time (it could), and to see the effect, (they went boom)...

Before FD announced a wipe we were all as nice as pie... After the announcment - we were a bit... well... fighty? (nothing to lose).

I thought it would be better on release when everyone has a lot to lose but that didn't happen, but, I like a dangerous galaxy - and I think this game worked out Ok...

*edit* - Marak - please don't post random crap when you just get in from the pub... No.. I mean it this time!

I basically miss when the game was actually challenging and difficult, when you could die at the drop of a hat for not paying attention, and when you actually had to know how the game worked and make it work for you rather than jumping on the forum and complaining and having yet another feature "consoled" into a low iq version of itself.

Now it's all kiddies complaining that they only make 2 million per hour and it takes them a whole week to buy an anaconda and insurance is too expensive and they shouldn't in trouble for shooting cops etc etc. At least they've stopped whining about docking... do you remember when it actually WAS difficult?

"Playability trumps realism" Michael Brookes once told me while trying to justify killing off smuggling. Well apparently brain dead play and boredom trumps all and challenge is useless.

I miss the bobblehead. Also, Eagle with railguns and endless ammo was fun. Oh, and no speed bleed in FA Off felt more real.

It certainly isn't difficult at all anymore. I really do miss being eaten alive by NPCs, not casually waving them off as nothing as we do today.
On a side note, I also miss the Alpha combat tests in the rings, where you could scavenge, pirate, and sell to the Anacondas lying about. To top it all off, the view with the red nebula nearby was fantastic.
Now I really miss old Beta 1 :(
