What do you think DB meant by this?

Its more likely to be stuff in the procedural code to make sure people find these things. Probably triggered when certain milestones of exploration are met.

I think he meant we're all idiots for not finding it already. Wings has been out for AGES.

This is starting to look like that NVIDIA scavenger hunt. Devs thought it would be over in a matter of hours and how long did that really take? Four, five days? And that's considering the fact that everyone knew what they were looking for and the target was within 200LY from the starting point.

Now imagine how long it would take to find something hidden within 10 000LY! I mean if you're lucky, all explorers will evenly scatter in different directions and eventually find it. But they might as well just miss it simply by choosing the star next to the JACKPOT...

i dont think there's beeen added things in the game which we dont know about ...

even the voyager probe was really a surprise, because it has no purpose to be here, just as sort of easter egg for fun.

The wording is very vague. What is deep space? Is 200,000 LS from Lave deep space? Or is 15,000 LY from Sol deep space?

We know that new goods (Artifacts, AI cores, etc.) were introduced with wings. Is that "something" just an npc with these goods in it's cargohold?

If you're a developer putting in content, you're not gonna put it in where no one would ever look. There are probably 50 billion brown dwarf systems out there, most of them between -20 and -40 of the galactic axis. If you placed "something" in one of those absolutely worthless systems, it's probable no one would ever find it - which is cool and all, except that's wasted man hours that serve no purpose, really.

Given that, if something has been placed, it's probably been placed near a landmark of some kind (Sag A*, Annihilator, Thor's Eye, Nebula, Forbidden Permit System).
Well, it's deep space whenever your Info panel tells you it is deep space. That's a clear cut piece of information. Nothing vague about it at all.

But yes, of course that can basically mean anywhere. ;)

This is probably the main thing I took from the AMA.
I was starting to think that the universe outside of occupied space was simply a random generated set of worlds from a template, it's nice to know there may be other interesting things out there.

Procedurally generated USS that have been around since WINGS also fit the criteria....Not trying to be a boo hoo poo poo...you can bet your bloomin nut that i'll be scowering around all weekend, chasing phantoms.

If I am disappointed, the cat is getting kicked! I take no responsibility for my rage.

This makes me want to read all of the books.... I've never played the original games and known next to nothing of the lore except what I've researched for gameplay reasons. It might actually enable me to create a believable roleplay for my character on top of giving me insights into the universe as it is....

I am really looking forward to what the black has to offer.

Something that definitely I will never forget
:D

Braben mentioned that what is in his mind was added during Wings... followed by a blink.
hmmmm.... maybe you need to explore with Wings to find ...

Maybe a wing passing through a system will trigger the Thargoid attack ;)

Well, whatever they planted, we haven't found it yet (at least not that I am aware of). But considering how little of the galaxy has been explored thus far, it's kinda expected...

Don't bother with gilmour. He's still butthurt that FD doesn't want him to cheat in open play.
I do not cheat, I play with my wife as a team so there is no need to cheat as we are able to overpower anything in the game as a skillful team., but I don't care if others choose to cheat, it doesn't cheat me as there is no competition.
I just found it funny he doesn't know what a celestial object is and that there cannot be a non-celestial thing in space as the definition is a thing in space. It's like saying there are things in my house that are not in my house. Shows a serious flaw in intelligence or logic.

We are not alone. ;)
Picked up a weak signal source out near the Dumbbell Nebula a few days ago that's about 1k from civilization.
The signal lasted a few seconds and disappeared without trace.

It creeped me out.

The original question was about "non-celestial things". Braben probably assumed the asker meant "non-celestial bodies" (note that "celestial body" is usually defined as a natural object in space), which is a reasonable and almost certainly correct assumption. It's unlikely the asker was asking "are there any non-space things to find in deep space".

I think your overly pedantic interpretation is motivated by your personal feelings about Braben/FD/the game. Reasonable people are not having any trouble with the exchange. AFAICS the only "serious flaw in intelligence or logic" is one the you're making.

I wonder if DB is referring to the community station project that if I recall correctly was released on the wings update? or am I mistaken?
