Newcomer / Intro What do you use Ship Lights for?

My interest was piqued by the suggestion on another thread about the idea of derelict stations/ capital ships... and what a great suggestion it is.

But as is...

What, if anything do use this function for on your boats?

For lighting things up! :D

Seriously, mainly for landing and mining.

I don't know since i don't sail.

But in Elite Dangerous I use it on my space vessel in the vacuum of space to light up outposts.

When I see another player at a station, I blink my lights at them. On that note, when are you implementing air horns FD? I need one that plays 'la cocaracha'.
I hate to break it to you, but in space, no one hears your airhorn. :D

Shiplights are infact useful in many occasions, but especially (as stated above) when mining. Lights illuminate the chunks of ore which you need to collect, making them much more visible when at close proximity.

Good to know I'm not the only one doing that. Also (and offtopic) : try to position your ship with the sun in the back and watch your shadow while you lower and raise your landing gear. SO awesome :)

I noticed that for the first time a few hours ago, and I've been playing since the beta came out. I was absolutely astonished.

If you end on the dark side of a planet in a asteroid field they are very useful. They are near impossible to make out. :)

I drive large, commercial cargo ships for a living - no, seriously! In RL, I'm a 2nd Mate (navigation officer-boat-driving-guy) with a UK-based ship owner, and I agree 100% with Malic that red/green/white lights are an absolute life saver when it comes to navigation. Highlighted by the occasion I very nearly ran into an absolute clot of a fool who though it was a good idea to take his small yacht across the English Channel, at night, with: No lights, no RADAR reflector, no identity transponder (AIS for those in the know) and had obviously left his brains behind somewhere up the Medway. Needless to say I didn't see the guy as he didn't show up on RADAR, until by chance I saw a silhouette of his sails pass in between a nearby buoy and my own vessel. Put the search light on him and got his name and ratted him in to the coastguard :)

After too many years of playing civilian flight sims, I turn on the lights when cleared for docking, turn them off when I settle onto my landing page, and turn them back on again when leaving. The idea being that it makes my ship more visible to other players to avoid collisions.

It also helps at some really dark outposts. But mostly it's just a fun procedures/role-playing thing.

Signaling other players, but mostly in dark platforms (behind planets) to make sure I don't crash into anything while docking/landing.

I also usually have them on in dark asteroid fields (again behind planets though I quit flying there) but honestly by the time you "see" the asteroid you're looking at an expensive insurance claim.

Is there any way to get position lights added though, mainly for around stations. I fly helicopters and you will believe how much a simple Red/green/white can help in determining orientation from a distance

Have a look at the sides of the letterbox when you next enter a space station... ;)

I turn them on when I go and stand near the front of my souped up Viper so it catches the steam in the outfitting bay as the dubstep comes out of my ship sound system.

You can take the boy out of Essex, but...

The only catch is, in an atmosphere, When viewed from left you see red, when viewed from right, Green If you see white you are behind

In space, you dont know what is now "up" for the other person.

Now a couple other things to think about with this is also color blindness, so have to think about that as well

Another thing I would like to see is being able to have open comms around stations, to be able to make calls "Entering/exiting docking slot" And maybe even just flash something on the comms panel just to make people aware that someone is talking there too.

I really like this idea.
