What do you want to do in Planet Zoo

So im currently brainstorming ideas for the next project i want to do once im finished with my black forest one.
The ones i have are:
-Australian version of my black forest wildpark, displaying only local species since i didnt get the chance to build for alot of the oceanian animals yet.
-Small Zoo on the north sea coast, being mostly an aquarium/sea life esque place with mainly seals, penguins and stuff but also a few lowkey miscellaneous animals like meerkats and lemurs.

But im very much open for ideas! Just gotta be something on the smaller side since i have neither the motivation/endurance or the computer to do a huge city zoo for example. Oh and ideally something decently realistic that you could actually see somewhere in the world.
If you do the north sea zoo, zoo bremerhaven might be worth a look as its basicly what youe concept described

Okay i settled on the bremerhaven inspired zoo at the sea idea and been working on an species roster for the zoo. The place will have just 2 thematic area, being the marine area and an aquarium/tropical house, the other animals will have no real order or themes. Got the roster largely done, but since most of theses are very much on the small side and/or will share an enclosure id still like to add a couple more.
Could kinda use some help with that tho. I chose all of the misc animals because they fit the small zoo with a small budget vibe, which i determind by seeing them in such settings and because they are semi regularish kept as exotic pets here in germany lol. So any other animals should ideally fit that theme aswell. Kinda surprisingly found myself lowkey wanting the serval because it would fit in here like a glove lol.
Currently got:

Marine/Sealife esque area
-African Penguin
-Seal
-Sea Lion

Aquarim/tropcial house
-Caiman
-Capuchin
-Small Clawed Otter
-Lar Gibbon
-Water Monitor

Miscellaneous
-Camel
-Wallaby
-Emu
-Lemur
-Meerkat
-Porcupine

Id add prariedogs, which i have seen in a petstore here in germany before in an admitedly rather nice enclosure, a faux seabird aviary for miscellanbeous wattenmeer birds like oystercatchers, racoons, which are basicly hurled at zoos as the only other alternative once one has been taken in is murder, alpacas if you want to add an ungulate as a semi common "exotic" domestic, sussex chicken because small and its common for zoos to breed their own chicken for protein and lastly the nine banded armadillo as a stand in for more common armadillo species in the tropical house, my recommendation for a fun twist would be to keep them together with the capuchins, where the ground is primarly for the dillo and the climbing frames above for the capuchin. I would also incorporate atleast a few exhibits if possible, with a snake and a frog fitting well into the tropical house and the tortoise into miscellaneous

I think alpacas and llamas here in the UK are seen as a bit more of an "oddity" then your typical farm animals because they aren't as common but they certainly are not rare. Yesterday I saw some donkeys in a field and it made me realise I don't think I've actually seen donkeys in farms very often outside of zoos...

The farm animals I see the most here are sheep (I live in Wales, which is particularly infamous for these), cattle, and horses.

I know they're from South America, but I've never heard anyone refer to llamas or alpacas as exotic really, at least not in NZ. No more exotic than a breed of Dutch or German dairy cow.
Yeah but in a german context its more "exotic" then other domestics a budget zoo could have, even if they are common as petting animals, but thats also why i put it in "
And its also really not uncommon to have lamas or alpacas as a stand in for the wild versions in a south america area, i know a very nice budget zoo that even is part of 3 EAZA breeding programms, which south american "area" consists of ocelots, macaws, coatis, tufted capuchins and a mix of alpacas, maras, rheas and canada geese of all things.

Uh those are some good ones! Yeah definetly want some waterbird aviarys, really sucks that we dont have any exotic waterfowl, so i probabyl gonna use the crane and/or flamingo

I'd consider them exotic livestock. I actually don't think I've ever seen a llama in real-life before except on a zoo in Mexico many years ago next to the dromedaries

So still on break cause i injured my hand, but i got plans for what to do once i can play again.
I allready got a petting zoo area, call me a clairvoyance or something, 2,5 habitats strong so far, a non enterable habitat for goats on the right and a large pen for sheep, highland cattle, chicken, a donkey and currently still bactrian camels that might will be removed as they are "dangerous". That pen will be able to be seperated into 3 parts, a chicken and other domestic birds part on the right, a large main part for the ungulates in the center and a smaller pen on the left where visitors can enter or smaller groups of ungulates be seperated in.
My current plans are that left of the main barn will be a small hub with a food court, sitting area and a staff acess to the staff path behind the swamp herbivore habitat to my tropical house.
In the center of the sandy pathway will be 2 seperated educational areas regarding farming, featuring crops, signs and maybe a beehive and whatever else ill come up with. The south side of this barnyard loop will feature 3 extra habitats. Opposite to the petting part of the mixed habitat will be a rodent habitat for either bunnys or guinea pigs, whatever we will get first and below that with water access will be a pig habitat, which were suppoused to be kunekune to also fit in with the oceania area on the other side of the waterwalkway but for now the bacon pig will suffice. Between the sandy path and the lower river is some space for another habitat, but im not yet sure if i want alpacas and therefor use all the new animals for the first time since south america or if i want to pretend for another domestic, eventhough im not even sure what, or keep the space either as greenery, another farming display or maybe even a playground so if you guys got idears, im open to hear them

Display about historic/traditional farming would be cool and fit in with the old timey breeds and make good use of the barnyard scenery peices. Maybe an old barn functioning as sort of a time capsule, showcasing what aggriculture was like 100 years ago?
Im currently building a little farmhouse museum in my park with the same idea

at First i wanted to build only for the lions, then I thought, there is so much space, I want another, second big cat. So the jaguar is also coming. Sometimes soon, I hope. I have so many construction sites in my zoo. Elephant house, South America Path, Polar Bears, Ibex+Takin mountain, Jungle river for pygmy hippo and more, Bonobos, and not to forget: the oceania house. When should I do all this stuff. 🥲

So here im back with another shot of trying to organise my thought, this time about my african area.
My african area was so far suppoused to have 3 centerpiece habitats:
  • Lions in darkblue (finished)
  • Gorillas + tropical house in red (~70% done)
  • Mixed habitat for elephants, antelopes and ostriches in dark green (lord have mercy)

While also allready featuring 3 finished "filler habitats":
  • Meerkats in yellow (below the lions)
  • Okapis and warthogs (below the gorillas, mostly not in the picture)
  • Aardvarks in purple (next to lions and elephants, not very happy with it, might be bulldozed)

But i got some new idears.
For 1. im unsure how exactly i want the area between the lions, elephants and gorillas to be devided. Besides the staff path being a clear work in process im thinking about either expanding the gorillas (light red with ?) or building a seperateable enclosure for the lions (light blue with ?) or maybe even hyenas with the idear of a shared shelter building where in the backstage the animals can be rotated between the habitats with the basics allready in place as the shelter entrance of the lion habitat has 2 seperate entrances for them, one into the larger interior holding on the left and one small one on the right, which would be perfect as a passageway. But at the same time the space would also be free real estate for guest facilitys which my zoo is quite lacking in like a shelter, a restaurant or a playground, maybe all of them.

2. Inspired by marvinbs latest post i also want to build a walkthrough aviary for flamingos and african penguins + whatever other waterfowl we hopefully still get. I just lowkey fell in love with the idear and their execution of it so i want to give it my own shot, wanting to put it roughly where the pink circle is. Thats also the main reason why im coming back to this area, as i want to atleast somewhat build the connection tissues between it and the rest of my zoo.

And lastly 3. i still havent decided on where exactly i want the mammoth project of the elephant house to go. This will most likly be the most important decision i will still make in this zoo and one im still prostponing in the hopes of becoming a better builder to give it my all once i actually do tackle it. Another resason for my procrastination is that i want atleast one other habitat inside the elephant house, be it an aviary, some reptile or small mammal, whatever, but im feeling very unsure what to put there besides a scarab beetle exhibit, so im very open for suggestions. For something i actually do feel ready for, if i actually start to tackle this area more besides expanding the lions shelter i want to get rather quickly to building a stable for the antelopes aswell as a backstage seperation paddock, most likly somwhere above the light blue area to hide it from the visitors view.

Im very open for and would love some suggestions for other idears, animals and what to do with the filler space, so if anybody got a good idear or some great inspirational images id love to hear/see them

If you are unhappy with the current aarvark exhibit i think it would be cool to relocate them into the elephant house. Not only are they related but there is also the story telling and education opportunity for a weird 3 way food chain/ nutrience cycle: Elephant poop feeds beetle -> beetle get eating by aardvark -> aardvark aerates soil which allows plants to thrive -> plants feed elephant -> repeat.
Only problem is that aardvarks mostly eat ants and termites, so maybe the meerkat would be a better option here but they are already in us :D

Ah yes. The wonderful Arctic chimpanzee. My favorite ape.
The zoo wanted to replace them but the city urged them to keep the chimps to not throw away their second highlight species for thematic consistency. There wernt any real plans as the idear to remove the chimps was shot down that quickly, but going along with the theming of the zoo and what animals are common in german zoos, lynxes and polar foxes sound like rather save bets

I made a crude masterplan for my coastal zoo, mostly because i wanted to make sure i can fit everything i want in here onto the area i have given myself, in addition to preventing me from forgetting something haha.

Mariasiel1.jpg

1: Entrance
2: Wadden education center
with aquariums for local sea animals like cat sharks, crabs etc plus education about the whole ecosystem, how the tides works etc
3: Walkthrough aviary for birds living in the wadden sea like oystercatcher, pied advocet, eider and arctic tern
4: Seal rescue facility
5: Flamingo + whistling ducks
6: Lar gibbon
7: Asian small clawed otter
8: Capybara + capuchin
9: Aquarium and Tropical hall
(needs a catchier name tho) with indoors for gibbon, otter and capuchin, caimans, water monitor, armadillo, marmosets and sloth. Aswell as aquariums for both fresh and sea water.
10: Aviaries for hornbill, kookaburra and kea
11: Puffin
12: Arctic fox
13: Polar bear
14: Raccoon + either skunk or beaver,
havent deceided yet. Beaver would fit better with the whole focus on aquatic animals the zoo, but would probably also need a way larger enclosure than a mix with skunks. And now that i think about it i probably will just move them away from that area entirely and place them in the 21-24 area somewhere. Having most of the heavy hitters like polar bears, seals and penguin there probably means there should be some room for the guests to breathe
15: Aviary for bald eagle
16: African penguin + pelican +cormorant
17: Sea lion
18: Harbor seal
19: Restaurant under the lighthouse,
potentially with access to the "dock" area that surrounds the zoo, can totally imagine guest taking a boat tour to the sand banks that lie in the wadden sea to see wild harbor seals and a bookable extra.
20: Meerkat + porcupine
21: Ring tailed lemur + aldabra tortoise
22: Walkthrough south america aviaray
for macaws, toucan, black necked swans, spoonbill and ibis
23: Bactrian camel
24: Wallaby + emu
25: Serval

Random closing thoughts i guess:
  • Totaly not set in stone and some things will probably change a little. Especially on the left side of the zoo it feels like i can probably squeze in another habitat or two, mabye another hoofstock like fallow deer or a small petting enclosure for alpaca and sheep/goat. But by the time i get there we probably have the next dlc, which hopefully has some fitting animals, coati or maras would fit in here perfectly imo.
  • Also really had to keep myself to go completly nuts on the birds sicne there are so many amazing mods for them, originally i wanted to also have an walkthrough aviary for asian birds like cranes, mandarins, bar heade goose and pheasants, but similar to the seal situation a 4th walktrough enclosure for waterbirds might be one to many haha.
  • I kinda wanna also include the grey seal because they are also local animals here albeit much rarer than harbor seal, but idk if 3 pinipeds might be one to many and habor seal and sea lion is a more interesting combo and harbor and grey i think.
  • Depending on how im feeling when all of this is done (or how my computer is doing, all that water definetly takes its toll lol) i still like the idea of an expansion area to the left that in lore would be a recent ish addition to the zoo to be a able to keep larger animals aswell and would probably accessable by a bridge over the road. If this would happen i definetly would want some kind of great ape, a big cat, a savannah enclosure and either rhinos or asian elephants, with another couple small enclosure sprinkled around them.
