I'd really like to see asteroid-based starports as Freeholm is described in Michael Brookes' novel Elite: Legacy
Be careful what you wish for. Going on past form when new mission types were introduced you might get:-I imagine it would go something like this:

haul x to x

go blow up Mr. x

haul x to x

go blow up skimmers at x

go blow up Mr. y

But most of all, more ships. A lot more.
Faster servers/responses primarily.
Better exploration. Better missions. Better trading. Normal passenger gamplay.
Daleks, lots of Daleks.
Actually, one more thing - Wormholes.
There's a great deal that could be done with these. Perhaps they might appear first as an "Unknown Wake", and act similar to ship wakes, even being scannable with a Wake Scanner, but then reveal themselves to be something very different - perhaps the result of the passage of an alien craft, or just a natural phenomenon, serving to link distant points in the galaxy.
Just imagine being that explorer who happens on one of these, only to find that, after scanning it, you're drawn in to it and deposited some 10,000 Ly from where you started. Enjoy the exploration home!
In our current era of science, there's still many unknowns into what wormholes can and cannot do. Maybe in the next millennium, (hey hey year 3000!) we'll have a vastly expanded book of knowledge on what wormholes can and cannot do (if the world hasn't gone to a total nuclear holocaust by then...).
Making wormholes into a legitimate method of transport does skirt between realistic and non-fiction with current science. I know it's been theorized, but probably not something that is realistic in this day in age.![]()
I want less fluff and more core gameplay.
Remove power play and RNGineers please..
Use the spare time to fix and upgrade the mission system, chain missions, wing missions, pirate asteroid base assault's, rescue missions, escort missions...
Better mission givers, ability to barter with mission givers like you could with FEII in the 90's.
Ability to interact with passengers on VIP missions.
Better exploration mechanics, ability to land on planets and mine. Take soil samples and sell them, find comets and "dark planets" (ones that orbit no star and just float through space).
Orrery map view
CQC Assets that actually do something - ability to refuel, rearm and repair at them via limpets rather than having docking pads?
At the moment they're just floating blocks that look nice and do nothing!
Better BGS , ability to take missions specific to certain factions which can lead towards being honoured by them and allied, giving you a "tag" like CMDR Spacely Sprocket "Saviour of Eranin" and discounts on weapons and ships in that system which are not available to other players, and no chain interdiction bug attached to it!
To name but a few...
Can't remove Power Play and Engineers. Coded into the game, and a ton of developer time went into making those two major updates function.
Missions are by far and beyond above the most requested thus far.
So with Better BGS, you're looking for something that many MMO's have with player titles?
TL;DR: Much more nuanced, varied, persistent, rule following NPCs please.
I want persistent NPCs that follow the rules (i.e. cannot easily follow you if you have greater jump range) and moreover the spawning of enemies to be more tightly based on the system state and BGS. Current "random" interdictions are purely based on yourcombat rank and +1 rank if another one of your ranks is higher than your combat rank and not much else. too boring.
Security should have a much bigger impact but mostly, please stop with the cardboard NPCs that are going to "boil you up" or "want everything you have" then pop up right behind you whenever you drop out of supercruise in RESs every.single.time.
