What force is reducing speed

In normal space, the speed limiter is present because past a certain point the ship's shields and hull are no longer effective at blocking cosmic particles. At higher speeds than the ship is rated for in normal space, you'd likely die of radiation poisoning or from being pierced by microscopic particles.

In supercruise and hyperspace, the Alcubierre drive is effectively bending space and time so the same physical issues no longer apply.

I know jokes were incoming :) But I thought maybe time to raise this issue agains now when we have GLIDE and higher speeds with engineering.

Why continue to cap speed when obviously the netcode and engine can handle it?

Otherwise, no combat ever.

Not quite true, you'd get combat but it would be the same kind of very dull long range jousting combat that Elite 2 and 3 had. ED made the right choice in sacrificing a little bit of realism for a lot of good gameplay.

I recall reading a dev comment where they said that they had tried it and it wasn't fun.

because. its a game. and the need for combat that isn't pure jousting. And ED isn't a pure simulator.

Ah, maybe that. But I would not mind if the ships could go a bit faster. 300 m/s which is common on non-engineered ships is not even above the sound barrier.

Its an Eagle in Elite flying at same speeds as a commercial Jet!

I say up the speed like 5 fold and then add some lore or tech reasons why faster is not possible without severe failures or similar.

When We have atmospheric planets, will we be seeing commercial jets in Earth atmosphere wizzing past our space fighters???

I believe it's cat phase angle stability dampeners.

Ship engines are powered by refined versions of this:

Star wars jokes in 3 - 2 - 1 ....

I'll oblige.. The Force.

This is not the speed you're wanting to travel.

However, there is this thing we tend to forget:

E2 = (m c2)2 = (m0c2)2 + (pc)2

As velocity increases, relative mass increases and moment decreases. Ultimately the faster you go, the slower you end up going.

Physics.. not just a good idea, it's the law.
