What has ED forced you to do?

With the impending release of ED and SC as well as games like DayZ and ARMA3 I decided to go out and buy my first new rig in over ten years (been on a MacBook Pro for the last 3), plus peripherals, X55, Astro Headphones...

You only need one kidney right?

It has made me buy an X-55, Voice attack, Track IR 5 and the game lol but I am having so much fun in the short time I have been playing with it one day I will be able to land in a space station without having a panic attack.

E:D "made me" Buy a new gaming rig, Also I have bought and tested the following controllers, X-55 HOTAS, Logitech G-13, Black Widow, Voice Attack, ROCCAT™ Power-Grid™ ;) and a Bluetooth headset for VA. Oh and Pinnacle Profiler. And it "made me" buy an office chair to save my back.
Although I have been using versions of this for years, E:D also "made me" realise what a great controller the Logitech M570 is. I already had a Microsoft Xbox controller but I have found it useless for E:D even though E:D "made me" buy "KontrolFreek Elite" extensions for it, so it hasn't been used for a while...
It also "made me" fry my laptop, because I just had to play spaceships in bed.
I suspect I am just getting started.....

It forced me to buy Track IR 5 - was using Freetrack for all my sims beforehand.

I wasn't aware of ED tracker at the time and even if I was, I'm pretty sure I was ready for something plug and play after all that Freetrack fiddling.

Facetrack NoIR with a Delanclip and a butchered four quid PS3 camera (the mod took about ten minutes, including finding my screwdriver set) worked beautifully with minimal fiddling. I just adjusted the sensitivity with a slider, and was good to go!

(..I think that giving TrackIR money would have made me feel dirty. Also, even if I did, I'd have wanted a Delanclip anyway)

That said, I have an EDTracker now, and am looking forward to comparing them. I wonder if writing up a brief comparison would be of interest to anyone?

Yeah, ED made me get into head trackers. I also bought an X55. Lunacy, I have to have a TIDY desk to fit the damn thing on there!

Buy TrackIR, X52Pro, VoiceAttack and now an Oculus Rift DK2. Also a completely new PC to play on the oculus with everything maxed out and low persitence. Around... 1200€... plus Alpha backer pledge :p

Monies, Marginalized wife, bought harness for 7 month old baby ( spacebaby now ), originally had fullscreen high settings on GTX580 and had first ever 97C temp. Scared me to death, so immediately got new case and moar fans, got emergency GTX 740 ( ew ) in case temp didn't change, medium settings ( was placebo sad about not runnng max ), thought I bricked MOBO attaching fan to bios jumper, modded X52, took PS Eye camera apart only to find I have bad version, tried to set lighting in my mancave to use facetracknoir properly but playing spacegame with lights on drove me insane, stole our devkit kinect from office - only to find kinects suck and use 45% of gpu, then realized I could use my optitrack mocap camera with trackIR instead, cut a triangle in my hand reseating and artic silver-ing my 580 gpu, now being destroyed in infinite loop by sidewinder faceoff.

Worth it.

works fine

Just be advised that ED currently doesn't support nvidia 3dvision (it's great for other games, but reading your post, I thought that maybe ED is the only game you play).

No probs with 3D vision here tbh, i think there are a few moments it looks a bit iffy, but i tried it with 3d vision monitor and sony hmz t2 they use 3dtv play, the problems were the same, haven't tried it on a rift yet but am almost 100% sure the problems will be the same on that too the 3d isn't quite done yet.
when in an asteroid field the rear starfield appears to be in front of the asteroids.
Could someone with a DK2 confirm this ? otherwise everything is pretty spot on.

Bought a T-shirt
Bought the lifetime expansion pack (twice somehow, and the refund was handled quickly)
Spend even less time with my wife, she's not happy
Clear out the downstairs bedroom which meant unboxing so many books and DVDs (we only moved in 8 months ago) so I could set up my desk and PC. There's still a wall of boxes to unpack but they don't get in the way so they can wait :D
Re-live my childhood
Buy Voice Attack
Be tempted to get a X52 but as I only use 3 buttons on my current joystick and have disabled the throttle I think all the ones on the X52 would be a waste

This thread has made me chuckle. I was thinking the same thing. How much stuff have I accumulated just for this game. Well for me, quite a bit.

Had a really dated PC that I could play Oolite on. Downloaded Elite: Dangerous and the PC was having none of it (I had a dusty PS3 for gaming and only got interested in 'real' gaming when this game was announced) Rustled up enough notes to buy a not so dated rig second hand (Dell XPS Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz). E : D blew the graphics card. Bought (I'm on a budget) EVGA GT 740 SC 2GB. (works fine on Med/Hi 1080p). Bought Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas X. Bought anaglyph glasses. Bought Delan Clip. Spent a week sussing out FacetrackNoIR with LED. Bought PS3 Eye to replace the one I took apart to remove the IR filter. Bought black paint for the MDF mounting I made for my controls (HOTAS and PS3 controller) Bought a cheap gaming headset. Bought VA. And it is worth every penny. (dreading thinking of the system I'll need if I want Oculus)

Forced, I guess so in the long run. Saving for a new system next year (2015) with what ever latest tech hardware is around mid to late 2015.

And I now also lobby for Force feedback (haptic feedback) in both ED and SC. ED has forced me into force feedback... see what I did there. Love the force!

Bought an Oculus Rift DK2 which I am trying to patiently wait for...

Built an all metal three foot wide model of a Cobra MKIII

Buy an X-52 Pro, Voice Attack, 32" HD monitor and Track IR. About to get my Obutto R3volution delivered (within the month), and looking forward to the Oculus consumer version next year.

Oh, and I'll be upgrading to an X-55 sometime in the next 4-5 months, when I convince my wife to come play the finished game, a job already 4/5 done thanks to the amazing work by FD that she's been looking at over my shoulder. She gets my X-52, because she loves the lights. :D

As with many here it seems, I bought a Saitek x52 pro and will be purchasing an Occulus Rift when they become available. I'm of half a mind to get the TrackIR 5 just to keep me covered for a while and there have been good reviews on it.

What has ED forced you to do?
...buy a HOTAS stick (X55)

..oh...and program my own speech control software because voiceattack doesn't work for me (Speech2Keys...which is freeware if anyone wants it. Link can be found elsewhere in the forum. Just search for the name.)

Forced me to buy an X52 Pro, and then when I finally got too frustrated with trying to get it working under Windows 7 via bootcamp on my Mac I accidentally walked past a clearance stand in a local media superstore selling an end-of-line laptop at 400 Euro discount...so I bought that too. So now I (finally) have a gaming laptop with a decent amount of space (I used to only have 66 Gb of disk space on my bootcamp partition) to install all the Windows-only stuff, of which I've only actually played Elite : Dangerous.

I was planning to buy/build a monster gaming PC later this year as I see a lot of hardware improvements coming together this year...but I'll probably postpone that to next year now that I have the new laptop.
