We're not in disagreement here. The smoke and mirrors are rather well implemented.

I'm just saying, in video games trees generally don't make a sound, in fact they won't even fall in the forest if there's no player around to hear it. With Cobra engine I have seen no evidence to it being an exception. It's not really running a live full galaxy down to the grain of sand scale, it's doing a good job creating that illusion, but that's hardly reason to raise it on a pedestal when similar could be achieved using other commercial game engines.

That's not its job, it is only there to display pretty images, play nice sounds, and let the player look (and shoot) at stuff by accepting input. If you put it or any other graphics engine on top of a suitably powerful simulation feeding it data, there'd be no stopping you from zooming all the way from the microwave background to a particularly pesky gluon.
